Thought from 6/16 v. Houston Game??? Or Not???

I am wondering does anyone have thoughts from the Saturday Night Houston Game?
Did we have a thread and I just totally missed it? Or Does everyone feel like I do and would rather not talk about the Game at all.

I'm with it!!! It was your typical, slugfest, grind it out, with very little offesive execution, and great second half defense that results in a win. That is how this season has gone. Not that I am complaining because we are in first place:D. But with that said, our team has a lot of work to do on the offensive end. At least One third of the Monarch offensive possessions come down to a shot with less than 6 seconds remaining on the shot clock. That needs to be addressed.

Other than that, Yo played her best game of the season, Chelsea played her best game of the season, Nicole and Kara were not very good. Sholanda Spree...uh I mean Robinson (her game reminds me so much of Latrell Sprewell's game) is by far the most improved player on this team and has become very consistant, and she was again against Houston.

was out and not able to start the thread. not to mention wasn't able to watch it too. :)

This game sums up our season so far: awesome defense esp in the second half.....and dismal offense.

I believe the offense will come along though, it will be the last to develop. good thing we have the white line.;)

Not too disheartened with where we are right now--(2) games ahead of where we were last season at this time! That said, our defense has always lead our offensive production. We actually have some offensive movement, when it felt like that was not something we had in the Wiz years...

Additionally, this is the first season with a 24 second shot clock, so all of the teams seem to be adjusting. Even Detroit, with it's more dominant offensive production, had several shot-clock violations tonight at L.A.

I think that the Monarchs will work the kinks out as the season progresses. That we are in first place in the West, and still have room to get better really isn't so bad:p

Just think how great they will be when they peak in the off-season!!!:D

That was some UGLY offensive basketball Saturday night...I think I'm going to just take coach's advice to the team and just let it happen. They'll eventually figure it out at some point. Defensively they kicked it up in the 2nd half thank goodness.

I'm a little bit removed from my feelings about the game, I just know I just kept saying "ugly" a lot or sighing, which I can look back on and laugh about now but was killng me at the time.

I looked at their offensive and defensive stats the other night, they aren't that far off from where Detroit is on either front. So they may very well be making progress. And hell, we are sitting atop the standings right now and we all feel and they all feel, they can play much much better than they have thus far. I'll take ugly wins and grind outs over the games they lost early last season.

They run the table this week, and it should be the realm of possibility they can and they have to grind out each win to do it? I'll take it and not complain one bit. No team in this league is a cake walk or a pushover. I think Washington and Minnesota have stated that case very well. We had a tale of two halves against both of them. Even Hou was ready to take us down if they decided every once and a while to not throw the ball away and/or shoot more than 50% from the FT line. Coach JB I think makes that clear most every night. But this team has character, and I give them credit for that.

I'm guessing you meant to say "post-season" and not off-season. Right?

;)

Oh my gosh--yes, I meant "post-season" and not "off-season". Please, please, do not let them wait to peak in the "off-season"!

That will teach me to post late at night...

I agree with most of what has been said here, so I really don't have much to add. It was a pretty ugly game. I remember looking at the one of the stat boards at one point and saw that the Monarchs were shooting 9%.

I was happy to see them turn it around in the second half though.

This is the second year of the 24 second clock, and they should have that bad boy figured out by now.

At least it was a "W" ...

That was one of the uglier, least artistic games I've ever seen at ARCO, but at least it was a "W" in the end ... It was great to see Tanty again, one of my favorites, and cheer for her! I really don't think it's going well for Houston coach Karleen Thompson, I don't think she will be back next year. One thing I have been missing is Haynie being a cold-blooded offensive killer, last year she could take the ball all the way to the hole, and just score, score, score. This year we seem to be running a "Use All 24 Seconds" offense. If we don't even shoot, how can we unleash our offensive rebounders? I would like to see Haynie just take more shots, early, late, whatever, shoot until she gets back in the groove and gets hot ... Final thought: My seats are right behind the visitors bench, I have never seen a team that was so quiet, and so still in each and every huddle (easy to take pictures of) almost eerie ...

uhh Houston...

That is a tough situation indeed. I have always liked Karleen Thompson and thought she got a raw deal in LA. I really Hope the light switch turns on for that franchise. Now that we finished our B2B match up with them.

In fact I would love to see them go on a winning streak. I think it is bad for overall league business when franchised go 0-fer this early in the season. Especially one like Houston.

But I agree with the concensus. It was UGLY... But we won and we are sitting atop of the Western Conference, with a little breathing room. Which when you think about is quite remarkable. Imagine what we will be like when it all comes together.

while i'm not ready to call her the "cold-blooded offensive killer" (i'm not sure she has been that in the WNBA), I know that she has the tool-set and the skill-set to be one. I agree most definitely that she no longer drives to the hole as much as I think she should. She seems to "settle" for outside jumpers. On the flipside though her 3 point shooting is coming along and is actually of a higher percentage than either Kara/Nicole (though she hasn't taken as much as either).

I still believe she is not "comfortable" and that she is trying to find the right balance between being aggressive, offensive, and a facilitator on offense. She is on her third year, but I believe her struggles will level off eventually. Being a back up to one of the best PG's of all-time in the WNBA is quite a pressure-filled task IMO.

All I hope is that she continues to develop and not let these struggles affect her growth.
