oh, I've felt that way many times without even trying. But then I come to realize that those around me are looking at me that way too.

gina - We get it. You don't like him. What is it? Professional jealousy? Or does his popularity drive you nuts because he's tapped into something that a lot of people get enjoyment from?

Professional jealousy? Hardly. I think it's sad that most Americans can't name one living great American artist and their only exposure to art is some moron named Thomas Kinkade. Perhaps you enjoy his work because you lack the ability to comprehend real art. Yeah. That must be it.

If you want to continue the exchange of personal attacks, perhaps we should take it to PMs since I'm reasonably sure no one else is going to be interested.

Feel free, however, to keep posting your insightful commentaries about Kinkade's work and I'll continue to post the daily thoughts. People can decide for themselves which to read and which to ignore.

I am curious about one thing, however... Art is judged solely by the individual, is it not? What one person enjoys another might not get at all, right? So why is it that your opinion of Kinkade is more valid than someone who enjoys his work? And further, why is the idea that someone finds something enjoyable so unpalatable to you? Are we only allowed to enjoy those things of which you approve?

Art is universal and also very personal. Different pieces speak to different parts of people's souls - good or bad. I find it extremely puzzling that you cannot simply accept that something you dislike still has a place in the universe.

You are more than welcome to find something by someone you admire. Start a thread to share that enjoyment. Perhaps everyone will learn about an artist they had previously never been exposed to. Wouldn't that be better than simply putting down those of us who like Kinkade because you find his work lacking?

I don't think I started the exchange of personal attacks but whatever.

As far as your second post, you brought up some excellent points (see I can admit that without attacking you). You're right, I could very well start a thread about someone I like but it would be a waste of time (much like my participation in this thread).

So, continue to wrap your brain around TK's profound world of bridges and houses and I'll go elsewhere.

Works for me.

I felt the need to address this. I enjoy many different artists, Kinkade among them. My aunt and uncle are artists, I have dated artist, my aunt is also an art teacher, so my exposure to all different types of art has been probably, above average. For the record, I also enjoy Dali, Monet, Rembrandt, Renoir, Dunne, Matisse, Warhol, Flack, Raffael, Adams, Hildebrandt, Whelan, Gogh, Kandinski, Pratt, I could go on, but I thnk I made my point. There are also a few that noone will probably ever hear of whose art I thouroughly enjoy.

I have no artistic taste whatsoever, my whole world is completely ecclectic. I learned what little I know about art from a high school photography class and being an art docent for my kids' 2nd grade class.

Having said that, TK's work reminds me of Hansel & Gretel, I just can't get into the surreal light/brick or stone house thing. But I like TK, have a lot of respect for him. I think he's from Sacramento, and he has built up his business nicely over the last 20 years.

TK paints an initial in each of his paintings (his wife's), and I always take time to find it. I'm sure VF knows what it is, but does anyone else know?

Just so you know? The picture for today is of a sidewalk cafe in what definitely appears to be a quaint French village. The pavement is wet, as though after a recent rain. It is NOT the typical house-bridge image TK is known for. In fact, there has been a nice variety of pictures already on this calendar that stray from his usual depictions.

I bought a metalic piece of his in a Salvation Army last year, thought maybe I could get into it. I couldn't, the metalic didn't help.

if you want a decent bed & breakfast, the owners are really nice. It was a pleasant place to stay. I mention it purely because AFTER my fiance and I went there, I found out it was "Home is where the Heart is II"

thanks albeit.
See the heart hanging from the lightpost in the pic? That's probably where the "N" is.

Nice place, Mendocino is beautiful. My hubby and I vacation a little south in Pacific Grove (right next door to Monterey). Nice B&B's there too, but we stay in the crappy motel, but right on the water (my hubby chain smokes on the porch, B&B's have no porch to torch). ;)

Thanks Prophetess for digging up the link!

Now, back to VF's regularly scheduled feel-good thought of the day...

does this help?
No! Way too unreal with the light, never happen. For me to enjoy, it either has to be very realistic or way abstract (Picasso, etc.). I have a pic I took of a double rainbow over the ocean that looks totally unreal, but...it's a pic and it is real.

I concur. I also enjoy TK's work for the immense beauty and lighting techniques he brings. While I enjoy abstract art, I am simply much more of a fan of scenery-type art.
