Things to do on the East Coast

Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place, feel free to move if it's not. I'm getting a great opportunity this summer, I'm going to America with a basketball team to play against prep schools and varsity teams. We'll be there for about two weeks and we'll play 11 games.
My question is, we have a few days off and we'll have two buses rented so we can go anywhere we want (around New York, New Jersey and Philly). Is there any basketball related events open to the public? This could be a problem as we'll be there from the 14th July 'til the 28th and obviously the season is over. Coach told us if there's anything in particular we want to do/go see, to let him know. He said we may take a trip to Rider college as some college players and occasionally NBA players workout there during the summer and people can go watch. Is there anything like this available or has anyone any fun suggestions? I'd love to get the chance to see college players up close, NBA players even more but I think the chances of that are unlikely.


On a non-basketball related note, what's the name of the theme park in New York? Maybe I'm being too vague, but if any of you name it I'll know it, I just can't think of it. It's meant to have some of the biggest roller-coasters in the world etc.

Well there's the NBA store in Manhattan. Kind of fun to waste a few hours there.

Massachussetts isn't terribly far away and you can hit the basketball hall in Springfield. I can't vouch for how cool it is, but if you have enough time to make a day trip to MA and check it out why not?

Thanks. Yeah, I mentioned going to the NBA store to him and he said we can do that. How big is it? I have no idea! What happens at the basketball hall? Why is it an attraction? I'm from Europe so not too familiar with specific halls etc. AFAIK we are going on a day trip to Philly and a day trip to New York, so not sure if we'd have the time to take one to MA.

Maybe I should have been more clear - Basketball Hall of Fame - its a museum dedicated to the history of the game:

The NBA store is 2 levels, pretty huge store in terms of NY real estate. Its like a mini museum of its own, except you can buy everything. Lots of jerseys for all your favorite teams, and higher end items like leather goods and memorial items. There's also a little basketball court and fun things to do in there. Its been about 7 years since I was last in NY though.

Well, you could always check out the Liberty if you don't mind watching women's basketball. And you could always check out Rucker park and Coney Island if you're into street ball.

Yeah, I might just ask if we can go to the Rucker. Are there games on there constantly? I know it's like the mecca of streetball, and while I'd prefer basketball anyday of the week, I'd still enjoy the chance to see some those guys play.
