The Real Problem...

I think the poster has a good point. Also, the fast break is getting us as well as no effective offense.

Since we can't easily get new players and we, on this site, can't fire the coach, I have a suggestion.

For defensive reasons and because we can't hurt our offense let's try for ten games a new starting five.

Point Guard Tyreke Evans
Shooting Guard Francisco Garcia
Small Forward JJ Hickson
Power Forward DeMarcus Cousins
Center Jason Thompson

The shortcomings of Garcia and Thompson have discussed many times over on this site but think about it, would they help us put up a better fast bread defense? I think so. And we have to agree we can't hurt our offense no matter what we do. Make this change and start losing games by one or two points and build from there. I am serious about this and decided to offer it here instead of a new thread. If it's not worth **** I'm sure some of you will tell me about it.

I like your thoughts, but I would go even further:

Point Guard Jimmer Fredette
Shooting Guard Francisco Garcia
Small Forward JJ Hickson
Power Forward DeMarcus Cousins
Center Jason Thompson

Jimmer is a point guard always has been. I think if he could run the offense with these other players he would excel. Some of the prettiest plays I have seen all season are hookups between Fredette and Cousins off pick and rolls.

I just think that in the NBA he is one of the better coaches right now. I just think he has a group of players that have attitude problems: Thornton, Evans, and last but not least Cousins. Even Jerry Sloan, Pat Riley, or Phil Jackson couldn't be successful in that environment. Yet he has some rookies, and other players that are not as demanding and would be willing to work his offense. So I think he is letting the Kings fail playing one on one ball to show them that they can't win that way. The only way they are going to win is as a team. That is my thoughts.

Now take the year before and after he was coach of those teams. He inhertited a great Suns team who just traded for Barkley. They went down every year he was coach. Seattle he went down each year as well. And here he has gone down as well !!!. And you can bring up his college days he went down as well.

So if you call a coach who's team gets worse every year a better coach then the Kings have had some great ones.

True, but remember who he was dealing with: Payton & Kemp. After the lockout Kemp came back in terrible shape! He had issues with Payton because Gary is very tough to get along no matter who you are. Remember Paul Westphal was a great player in the league. He understands the game, sometimes players like Payton who has sick athletic ability rely too much on their ability and don't want to work an offense. Where on the other hand John Stockton became a master of the offense, which made him great. He trusted in Jerry Sloan's system. He couldn't rely on his athletic ability.

Barkley...really? He is still an entity unto himself. He does whatever he wants and always has...no one manages Barkley. I remember Barkley lost so many games for the Suns by trying to take over games when he should have just run the offense. Ask Kevin Johnson about that. Phoenix could have been amazing, but Barkley even though he was one of their best players was also their achilles heel.

Players that buy into a system or a coach: Jordan & Bulls -> Phil Johnson | Kobe, Gasol -> Jackson | Malone & Stockton -> Sloan | Duncan, Ginobli & Parker -> Pop | Teams are successful!

When egos of players bare their ugly head team suffer. Westphal has the knowledge to put together a great offense and team if they will but listen, but the players he currently has haven't shown that ability. They rely on athletic ability too much. Even Jordan played within the system and that is why he was so successful.

And this just sealed the argument. Yes Jordan eventually bought into the system. But it took Phil Jackson to convince him. They were a playoff team with Collins and a champion with Phil. The same can be said for Shaq and Kobe. It took Phil to come in to get them to play to the system. People forget how badly they meshed before Phil got there.

Phil is a master of the mind that is true. That is why he has been so successful, but he has also coached the greatest players of all time. He is a one of a kind coach, with one of a kind players. The key was buying into the system is what pushed Jordan over the top. Jordan was a selfish player under Collins and learned through failure that being selfish wasn't going to win championships. Jackson played a huge roll in that.

So until these young players learn to follow the coaches system they will continue to struggle. They may put up amazing personal numbers, but they won't succeed as a team. I don't care who the coach is. In fact Phil Jackson wouldn't touch this team with a 10ft pole! At least Westphal is trying.
