[drupal=117]The REAL 64,000 question[/drupal]

Just how does one go about getting 64,000 posts on a message board?

That's the question I hear - and have heard - for quite a while. So, as the odometer turns over to the magical 64,000, I thought I'd take this occasion to - what else - make a few comments.

First of all, I want to make it clear. I do not look upon this as a great achievement or proof in any way of anything other than that I apparently have a lot to say and lots of time within which to say it. And thanks to Jeremy, our board owner, I have an opportunity to do so.

The Sacramento Kings are my passion. The game of basketball has fascinated me since the 60s. Not having a local team to root for, I was a fan for a very long time of the Boston Celtics. The day it was announced, however, that the Kings would be coming to Sacramento my life changed forever.

I've been a Kings fan from day one. I've loved this team when they've been horrid and I've watched as they took my breath away when they were good, very, very, good. I've agonized when they were mediocre, as I personally think that's the worst fate of all. Throughout it all, one fact has remained constant - I am a Kings fan.

Our current assemblage of players is at the beginning of their journey, and they're letting us come along for the ride. And if the early games are any indication, this is gonna be a ride we'll enjoy every step of the way.

Almost as much the Kings, I love Kingsfans.com I love the variety of members who come here to post, and I love the spirited debate on everything from the future of a particular player to which shoe is best...and all the great stuff we find to talk about during TDOS. This is, in fact, an Internet community of the very best kind.

One of the things I like most about this board is it keeps me on my toes, or sometimes stumbling over them. There are all kinds of fans here - passionate fans, analytical fans, critical fans, gushing fans, occasional fans, diehard fans, old fans, new fans, fans who stop by once in a while and those who are here just about every single day. We may agree - or not - but it's the discussion and the interaction that keeps most people returning. This is a very special place for Kings fans.

Another thing that really warms my heart is the family tradition a lot of us have about being Kings fans. There are a good number of our members whose children are also Kings fans. It's that kind of devotion that makes being a fan of the Sacramento Kings so special.

This is a good time to be a Kings fan. And I thank each and every one of you for helping to contribute to the betterment of the board and allowing me to continue to talk about the team I love.

Once, now and forever - I LOVE THIS TEAM!

I think she needs a computer with voice recognition software to save the wear and tear on her wrists. That and she wouldn't keep ruining keyboards whenever there are really funny posts. ;)

Damn, 64,000 posts... Those play by play threads add up quick don't they?

They used to average about 50 - 60 posts a game or so, I think. I haven't looked. If I did all the games in a season, that would account for about 4,800 each season.

Lol.

AriesMar has a point. I bet if I did play-by-play I'd have a jabillion posts also. ;)

Edit: If that's almost 5,000 posts per season. You do the math, that's more than half your posts right there, buddy.

Hey, if you think it's that easy to sit in front of your computer, watch the game and type a play-by-play at the same time, feel free to try it. I'd love to see you do it for an entire season.

Go ahead. Try it for three games in a row. I'll be waiting to see how you do.

See, what you fail to realize is that I never mentioned it was easy. I simply pointed it out to recognize the source of most of your posts. ;)

Actually it's not the source of MOST of my posts. I did PBP in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08. I didn't do all the games last season and I haven't done any this season. So, if you do the math, I have about 4.5 seasons @ 4,800 a season. So that accounts for roughly 21,600.

Just setting the record straight...

I was told there would be no math. Congrats on the 64K

I can be difficult to do a game thread, let alone PBP.

Congrats VF21, at one point didn't everybody's post count get reset because of a crash as well? Even more impressive.

In a strange sort of way, this reminds me of other threads. Someone will post: Great game by whomever. 22pt's, 10 boards and 5 assists. And you just know someone will post something about missing layups or missing a defensive assignment.

How VF21 managed to aquire 64,000 posts doesn't matter does it..To me, its unbelievable. To me its sets a goal for my life. I'm now going to have to live longer. So it gives me a reason to live. That makes her an inspiration to all of us. In some fashion. OK, I'll quit being melodramatic. Congrats mi dear.... Its an outstanding accomplishment, no matter how you did it..:D:D

It boggles my mind that, in the three years I was on this board before the crash, I was less than a hundred posts away from 10K and, in the five years since the crash, not only have I not matched my previous post total, but I've gone from fourth-most (behind VF, Brick and NME) to eighth-most... Who would have thought I'd had more free time when I was on active duty?

Whenever I finally get to 10K, maybe I'll bring back Calvinball...

Plase do!

That truly sounds like a plan. (I still have the original on my hard-drive somewhere...)

Having all those posts is great, but if I had them, I would be a little more humble.

I would too, if I were out saving the world. Come to think of it, VF is doing God's work. Spreading the word and saving Kings fans... one member at a time.

It's a message board, Beavis. Settle down. We're allowed to get campy in here from time to time.

I am simplifying here for those that don't know and may be interested:

Computers count in binary (base 2) instead of base 10 like we traditionally do, so things like megabytes and gigabytes aren't necessarily an even number in a base 10 system. See here for a lawsuit over the issue:

http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2003/09/60505

so instead of 64,000 being the magic number, you have to look at it in base 2 language, in which a common number is 1024 (a kilobyte), and 1024*64=65536. See, easy! ;)
