The question is, what is the guarantee that Rubio will EVER come over? He may never play for the NBA at all. Injury over the next couple years or a high-paying contract from a foreign team could keep him in Europe.

The Kings are the ONLY team that got to work out all the top PG prospects, and every indication is Evans blew them away compared to the others. They chose the BPA. At 17 wins you have to.

yes, i would still be okay with drafting rubio.... we all know my views on evans and i would be okay with rubio not playing until 2011-12. we would still have sergio this season maybe he'll be re-signed at a reasonable price. we still have beno unfortunately for the next 4 years so its not like we would be without a pg. as long as petrie made smart draft choices in the 2 years leading up to rubio coming over i would be cool with having to wait for rubio.

had rubio been drafted by the kings that would have been a indication of what type of team they were trying to build. its hard to tell with evans since well... you know. petrie would then have to find a way to get players that fit that mold to mesh with rubio. having sergio would help to ease that transition since they play a similar style of bball....

We disagree there. And it's not because I'm a huge Evans fan. I'm not. I don't dislike his game like others do, but I'm not his #1 fan either. I think there are legitimate questions about his ability to play point guard, and I understand the reservations.

That said, I can't understand why we would draft a player that won't suit up for us for at least two more years (maybe not ever), when we have a young team that either will grow together into a contender or will need to be adjusted to bring in more talent. The team is in the evaluation stage, trying to figure out exactly what we have, what we need, and what we can use to get it. I'd have rather seen us trade down out of #4 than draft a player that isn't going to come over.

In the Timberwolves case, they had four first rounders this year. They could afford to use one of them on a long-term project like Rubio. They'll still have an infusion of young talent with the other picks. Much more flexibility. And while I can understand what the Wolves did, I probably still wouldn't have drafted Rubio unless I could use two of my first rounders and move up to #2 to draft him, so I could be assured that he'd join my team right away. Having a player spend his formative years playing in an inferior league overseas is not a good way to determine what role he can play on your team. That's how I feel about it.
 
I also wonder, how much more aggressively would the Rubio camp have worked to get over to the US had he been drafted by Sacramento? I mean, if he wanted to play for the Kings, wouldn't there have been a bigger push to get over here?
 
Two years from now Jonny Flynn will have solidified his starting PG status. The T-Wolves will be near the end of the rebuild and eyeing a possible playoff berth. They will be in a "win now" mode, looking to fill needs with (most likely) veterans to mash with the youngsters. They'll be an athletic team playing at breakneck speed lead by Flynn.

So how does Rubio fits in with that group? Is the T-Wolves really going to upset the chemistry Flynn developed with other players? Are they really going to move Flynn to part-time SG to accomodate Rubio? Will the T-Wolves able to tolerate the mistakes that usually accompany rookies?

And lastly, will Rubio give up what he has in Spain to be a backup behind Flynn?

If I have to guess, I say Rubio will not suit up for the T-Wolves. I think he'll come over but the question is to which team?

Everyone says that he wanted to play for Sacramento, but his agent told executives that he was only absolutely going to come if he was top two in the draft. All indications are that, had we drafted Rubio, he would not have signed. And maybe he would have given it more thought, but it wasn't a done deal by any stretch of the imagination. He's in Spain playing for more money, with less pressure ... I'd probably go there, too. Not a whole lot of difference in being #4 than being #5.

In Minnesota's favor, they have his rights, so if he's still highly coveted in two years and wants to come over, they can work out a deal with anyone who wants him if they don't want to upset their chemistry. That's assuming Jonny Flynn turns into the player they hope he will.

how minny got rubio is the reason why i would be okay with waiting 2 years for him. they didnt just have the 5th and 6th picks, they traded for the 5th pick. they werent going to waste the 6th pick on rubio if the wizards kept their pick and passed on rubio. from what i can tell they knew that there was a good chance that rubio wouldnt be playing in the nba for 2 years before they drafted him. thats probably why petrie passed on rubio. and that more than likely why the twolves traded miller and foye for the 5th pick. it was a throw away pick for them.

they gained depth in their frontcourt and a pick that might not play in the nba. they lost nothing in that deal. they still have flynn and on top of that they now have back ups for love and jefferson.... which is something they didnt have going into the draft. i wanted the kings to trade for the wizards pick so that we could draft rubio and another player that i know will be able to play. we all knew that there would be a chance that rubio might not be able to play this season... but picking him could get a good player in return next season for the twolves.

if flynn pans out and the twolves eventually become a playoff contending team they wont need rubio. but teams will be interested in trading for his rights next offseason because he will be just a year away from playing. the knicks could so make a move for rubio next year, especially if they dont get lebron.

no matter what team he ends up on i will be looking forward to watching him play. id rather be waiting to see him play for my team but oh well...
 
I was all for drafting Rubio and cursed Petrie repeatedly for passing over him. That said there is no way the Kings, with their low attendance and precarious stadium situation, could afford to wait two years for him. I'm happy we drafted Evans, a skilled player who can contribute immediately. Bravo front office.

maybe rubio wants to work on his game or maybe he just doesnt like cold weather.... but either way there was a way around his buyout and in the end rubio chose to stay in spain. i think that he just doesnt like the idea of playing for minny.

That is simply not the case. You and others continue to say that the reason Petrie didn't pick Rubio was because of the possiblilty he wouldn't come over for a year or two. All indications are that Petrie and the Kings org simply viewed Evans as the SUPERIOR PLAYER. Whether or not the Kings brass thought he was the superior point guard is debatable, but clearly the Kings viewed Evans as the BPA and thats why he was picked. Even if Rubio had said he would be willing to mow Geoffs lawn if the Kings drafted him, Petrie still would have picked Evans.

Besides, Geoff drafted a certain player several years ago that he did know probably wouldn't immediately play for the Kings and he did it anyway.

i said that because petrie said that he wouldnt draft someone who wouldnt be able to play here this season. i, like many other assumed that he was talking about rubio. he sure as hell wasnt talking about thabeet.

thats why i said that, thats why most people say that.

If Rubio really wanted to be with the Kings, he could have cried something about really going to the Kings during all those days after the draft. Steve Francis has done that when the Grizzlies drafted him. The expected difference between the 3rd and the 4th pick's salary is only a few houndreds of thousands, which is by NBA terms almost negligible. We can always work out something if the kid really wants to be here and if the possible endorsement he was supposed to receive in Sacramento is really the possible difference maker, then we could have easily heard at least some personal speeches from going only to NBA if he's with the Kings.

But there was never a clear statement about things like he will go to NBA if he is with the Kings, whatsoever. So it's clear that either the kid suddenly got cold feet or he just won't take millions from his pocket yet to pay for his buyout, whether or not the Kings could have drafted him.

So although I am with the Rubio bandwagon before, I fully support Petrie's another unorthodox draft day, netting us Evans. Things are getting much clearer now, after watching Evans play in SL and after Rubio finally signing to stay in Europe.

And how can you say that you know what type of game the Kings will play by drafting a kid who will not be playing until 2 years? Have you forgotten the word chemisty? It is something you built when the team is playing together for at least a full season or two. If we drafted Rubio and he stays in Spain for 2 more years. Haven't you considered how frustrated the guys might be after being the worst team in the league and yet unable to have at least a top 10 pick? 2 years is a long time...and you cannot be sure that in 2 years you will still have the same core of guys playing. Martin, Cisco, Nocioni, or any of the vets can easily demand a trade. And ooops....there goes your, hey Ricky we will wait for you after 2 years.

THIS. I was watching NBA TV and on the scrolling marquee it said something like "Rubio considered working out a buyout with minnesota but on monday he said he changed his mind. Rubio made the decision so that he can have 2 more years to prepare for the NBA". If he still needs to prepare for the NBA, which i more than agree on, then why in the hell did he enter the draft? Could it possibley be because he knew there was alot of hype around him and he wanted to get paid? Not that theres anything wrong with that. I just find it interesting that Rubio entered the draft and then later he basically said he isnt ready. Notice how hes contradicting himself? Id also like to add that playing more FIBA ball isnt going to bring his game along faster than playing in the NBA instead. Cold feet.

What's up with wanting to come over and play against the best??? Everyone wanted to see him play against NBA competition and he chickens out the last minute when they had agreed upon a deal? I'm very disappointed in Rubio. How do those Rubio fans explain this? Would have loved to see him go up against our boy Tyreke or any of the other NBA pt guards. The more I think about it, the more I am starting to think that he might not ever come over at all. Why come over when you could be making millions in Europe and be a rock star while playing against inferior competition?

Your post is a pure speculation. Plus, playing in Euroleague is not easy at all, especially for PGs. Why? Watch some Euro basketball and you will find the answer.
 
Of course his post is speculation, along with everything else being posited one way or the other about Rubio. And I have to agree with one thing - Rubio might well decide he doesn't want to come to the US. And if he does, it won't be the first - or the last - time it happens.

If you want to discuss Euro basketball, I'd think it should be done in a different thread, you know?

I do not want to discuss it and I guess it was clear about it... However, discussing Rubio and his situation/decision and not touching NBA and Euro basketball at all is kinda difficult.

well rubio fans(like myself) just wanted a point guard, he was the best pg prospect in the draft... the rubio haters(who will remain nameless) just hate on rubio to hype up evans. once the season starts neither side will talk about rubio unless the kings play the twolves or someone just wants to start an argument.

rubio is no longer an issue. he's staying in spain for the next few years. once he decides to make the transition to the nba we will start this great debate all over again. by that time evans will be a fulltime sg and martin will be traded for some crappy flexible pieces. the rubio haters wont have anything to say because evans wont be a pg and will be busy comparing him to kobe, wade and lebron while we continue to rack up top draft picks....

Your argument has come full circle, AriesMar27. I think everyone who has ever posted on KF gets it. You think Evans is a SG and Rubio would have saved the franchise. I certainly hope if your scenario doesn't come to pass that you'll be as verbose in your mea culpas as you have been in your steadfast preaching of the Rubio chronicles.

I think most people here are more Rubio DOUBTERS than haters. How do you HATE an exciting 18 year old kid PG who reminds us of Jason Williams? We've barely even seen him play enough to even hate on him. I'm just pissed off that the dude is not coming over! I mean if money is a big deal, he'll make it all back and then some through endorsements. And if he's any good, he'll get a FAT obscene contract after his rookie contract in a few years. As a basketball fan , I want to see Ricky Rubio play against the best.

all of that to pay off the $8.11 million buyout. fc barcelona paid 5.28 million to joventut for rubio then they will be paying rubio some undisclosed amount for the next few years. im so not mad at rubio for his decision to stay in spain. he will be making millions there and will owe no one any money to play the game he loves. to play in the nba he will be giving up his entire paycheck plus his endorsements just to play for a crappy team and compete for minutes. id rather stay in spain and get paid too.....

if rubio played for the twolves and got injured he would be screwed... as we all know the last 2 years of his rookie contract are team options. he'd be damaged goods and millions in debt to a spanish team that only paid him $200,000 a season.... look at shaun livingston..... all the potentail in the world and now he can barely find a team that will play him for more than 20 games....
