Even if Evans fails drastically as a PG, odds are he will succeed as a SG. Soo, come 011 you will trade Evans (who at worst will be a 6th man/role player) with NBA experience for Rubio, who still might not have been in any sort of NBA game 2 years after he was drafted??
Sorry, I'm pro-Rubio and even I don't get that one.
Blah, blah, blah... Way too many provisos, what if's, etc. when the question is really, really simple...and yet you're dancing around it like there's no tomorrow.
IF we had drafted Rubio with our 4th pick (all other conditions being equal, no fancy footwork or trades or anything else) and AFTER the draft we found out Rubio couldn't get out of his contract and was going to play the next two years in Europe, are you telling me you would have been happy? If you're going to try and sell that pig you're going to have to put a lot more lipstick on it.

if we had drafted rubio and he couldnt play next season i wouldnt lose any sleep. it would suck because i would want to see him play but i would get over it.

And therein lies the problem.. We have a 25ppg SG in Martin who isn't old by NBA standards. I would like to see how far we can go with Martin in our core. He's already proven he's a good scorer and can cut with the best of them. Sure I wish he would defend more, but I think a lot of it has to do with "nobody else defending so why should I?" because in college he wasn't known as being a soft defender.

Yea this is why I mainly did not get the Tyreke pick. What is the scenario here? Give him full time PG duties, tell Beno and Sergio, "We're trying this, sit tight." and hope for the best? If it fails, is he relegated to backup SG? What did we do here? I know you go for the best available player, but this is not LBJ we drafted here, a player that can play 2 or 3 positions seamlessly. If he was drafted for the future, why did we not flip Martin on draft night? I'm just very confused as to why we took a guy with all the makings of a great SG and try to play him as PG all along while having a great (scoring wise anyway) SG that is still fairly young and could be considered in his "prime" for the next 3-4 years easy. I know he's had injury issues but everybody does more or less.

In today's edition of El Periodico, the Spanish daily reports that DKV has accepted in principle a buyout of Rubio's contract for $5.3 million, and that Joventut's board of directors will meet Friday to ratify the deal. And this morning, Kahn wrote in an e-mail, "My comment from yesterday stands."

As a wolves fan, I honestly believe Rubio staying over in Europe for two years is the best possible situation at this point.
1) It gives Rubio two more years to develop over in Europe, playing against good competition - he'll be ready to make a big impact in the NBA when he comes over at the age of 20, right when the Wolves will be ready to make a run at a championship under Rambis - we'll have him under contract for 5 years, starting when he comes over.
2) It gives Flynn a chance to play major minutes and showcase his talents - if Flynn does become a great point guard, we can always trade Rubio's rights - Rubio's trade value will only increase.
3) It only helps us secure a lower pick in next year's draft.
Thinking long term (2-4 years), this could turn out good for the Wolves.

Yeah, it seems that Kahn is going to come out of this looking like a complete fool. He's going to be the boy who cried "timberwolf". At least Petrie just zips his lips. Can you imagine having a GM who continually goes to the media to transparently lie in order to defend his bad moves?
If I were a T'Wolves fan, I'd want McHale back in the front office already. Wow. I just said that, and I was serious. Wow.
Let us just admit it. Rubio is a case of an over-hyped player once consistently projected at #2. The kid had been scrutinized to his bones by professionals and a lot have found out he was not really worth as high as #2. That smoke was there before the draft, proven after the draft, and the Kid did fall at #5.
Now, if you were Rubio would you still go to the NBA where there would be more risk of being uncovered for some more?

it will be 2 more years till Rubio is playing in the NBA... LOL! even if we took him i think things weren't looking good money wise. I was already completely happy with taking Evans who i think will be the better overall player. but im even happier now that this happened. dang we would have been soooo bummed out!

Agreed. A lot of people keep thinking that if the Kings took him at 4 then he would come over to the NBA right away for sure. But ultimately the money between #4 & #5 is not really that much more. If he decides (or his dad decides) to wait, then I don't think it would've been as sure win as many Kings fans think. What if we picked Rubio and we go through this? He is not worth this kind of gamble. Evans is ready to help now and has even more superstar potential than rubio in my opinion.

Okay, so Rubio isn't gonna play for the team that picked him in the draft, at least not for a while. This seems a little unfair to the fans and all...It's like the Cavs picking LeBron and him going to play somewhere else. This kind of crap pretty much screws up a whole year for the team in rebuild mode.
Why is this kind of crap allowed in the league? I don't get it.. You waste your season for a player who refuses to play? What's the deal here?

Rubio was already under contract for two more years, but had a buyout clause of about 5 or 6 million. The price seems to vary from week to week. Petrie stated before the draft that he wouldn't draft any player that he wasn't sure could play this coming year. So the Kings passed on him, and it could be that they would have passed on him anyway. Minny decided to roll the dice and pick him at number 5. Obviously they weren't all that sure that they would be able to work out a deal, so they also drafted Flynn at number 6. So Minny knew what they were doing when they made the pick.
Aparently Rubio burned his bridges with DKV, so Barcelona jumped in and bought out his contract. It appears that he has an opt out in two years. So Minny will eventually get him, but for the time being they've wasted a pick. Don't be surprised to see them trade the pick sometime in the future.

Minnesota was well aware this could happen and that's why the bought insurance by having both the 5th and 6th picks. They were clearly surprised that Rubio was there at #5 and double downed their bet (a safer one) by taking PG Flynn at #6. I think Minny is saying no sweat, we can wait or even trade Rubio eventually.

He's possibly the most overhyped athlete in sports history. With the way he currently plays theres no way he can be one of the better point guards in the NBA. Not without more strength and some kind of a jumpshot. After watching all the highlights i dont think ive ever seen him shoot an actual jumpshot. I also dont see him currently having any ability to finish around the basket in the NBA. Hed better develop a floater.

Or just be content knowing they'll own his NBA rights forever, much like the Kings and Dejan Bodiroga. Rubio might well never come to the NBA... With more international markets opening up for endorsements all the time, he might be able to make as much money there as he would here, especially when you start figuring in pesky little things like taxes.

Yup! Dejan Bodiroga is one of the greatest basketball player to never play in the NBA. And Kings holds his rights. Maybe this scenario just adds up to the reasons why the front office drafted Evans over Rubio. But of course now, Evans even without that...Evans would still have eatin Rubio alive during the workouts.

^personally, i'd rather go with the former. i think our core can still develop (martin, thompson, and hawes) in the interim, and once they've matured more you'd hopefully be introducing a positive X-factor in rubio. we end up saving money over the next two years, and if rubio does turn out to be a star, the endorsement opportunities for the franchise will be huge.
now, evans can grow with our core too and that can turn out to be something really good. or it can turn out to be bad if he can't handle the ball and ultimately it's either him or kevin that needs to be at the 2 guard. guess no one will know until 2 years from now...
