Starter
I voted no. We traded a good starter for a good bench/border line starter. Kevin was not a fit for this team, but Kevin is a proven quality starter. Landry is a better fit for this team just not the type of player that will have a huge impact in my opinion. Landry isn't the defender or low post threat some people are making him out to be. For me the value we got doesn't match what we gave up. Its really that simple for me.
I don't think this was a terrible move and if things come together in free agency this move could end up as a good deal. At the moment I'm just underwhelmed.
I think it is more correct to say that Kevin was a starter on the KINGS. Whether he would have started anywhere else is questionable at best because of his defensive problems. He would be considered a bench player, a 6th man who could come in with instant offense. As a starter, the Kings did not have a very good record with Martin. He gave up as many points as he scored far too often. His +/- was always in the negative. The addition of Landry automatically strengthens our interior defense, give us a low post threat, and opens up the offense in a way that Martin never could. There will be more wide open shots with Landry on the floor because of the double teams, and now 'Reke has someone to shovel the ball to under the rim who can finish. 'Reke's assist numbers will go up just because Landry is a more consistent finisher. Also there will be less wide open shots for the other teams we play because there will be better back court defense and better defense in the paint. Maybe even less double teams needed in the paint, which has always caused our defense to fail. I see this as a WIN for the Kings and an so-so for the Rockets. They are taking a pretty big gamble on Kevin. He is one dimensional and a defensive liability. He is a lot like T-Mac in that respect. And now they have one less interior defender to cover up Kevin's defensive mistakes. It is a gamble for Houston no doubt. but Adleman knows what he is getting so he must have a plan.
As for the additional cap space we gained. All that is is money the Maloofs do not have already spent. They can choose to not spend that money or they can spend a small portion of it to get another piece without having to worry about going over the cap. It is good, but dont expect the Maloofs to shoot the whole wad on a top tier player. First off, it would be very hard to get one of those players to come to Sacto without excessively overpaying them. And there is value in bringing in several smaller pieces that can help improve the team that would cost a lot less and probably be more effective in the long run. So Far Petrie has done a good job using little money to improve the Kings incrementally. This summer, after all the big names have either moved or resigned with their original teams which is more likely, then we will see what there is left that can help the Kings move in the right direction and help move the team toward what Paul Westphal's vision of the team is. Hopefully that vision will create a team that can compete and win playoff games in 2-3 years.
