I wouldn't sign CC...We would have so much money invested in two pitchers it would be tough to resign Lincecum...
If only the Mets signed Zito instead of us...
And I would trade Rowand before I trade Winn...The guy hasn't grown on me, and I think his 'Warrior Spirit' would be more appreciated around the league.
I disagree about not having enough money to re-sign Cy Lincecum. You structure the contract for CC the opposite of Zito's...in other words, you pay him
more the first couple years, and then it deflates after the third year to an even $15-16M. Maybe you pay enough the first couple years so that you could get it to deflate to $12M/yr for the remaining years. Then you give Lincecum whatever deal works to keep him here for a long time.
For the next 4 years or so, much of our young talent, both hitting and pitching, will be relatively cheap. And in 2-3 years you will have the next influx of cheap young talent -- Bumgarner, Alderson, Pucetas, Posey, Gillaspie....
When Sanchez becomes expensive, trade him for prospects and insert Bumgarner. When the 5th pitcher becomes expensive, trade him for prospects and insert Alderson. Then you have 2 cheapies to go with the three bigger pitching contracts. They will be eating up 40-50% of the payroll, but you would have the nastiest pitching lineup in perhaps the history of baseball.
On the hitting side, when Fielder becomes expensive, trade him and insert Villalona. Hardy you could potentially re-sign long term and make Hardy/Burriss the middle infield for a while. Sandoval and Posey will boss 3B and C forever, hopefully. Lewis and Scheirholtz will be cheap for 3-4 years too, so when they become expensive Rowand's contract will expire and you will have another cheap influx of outfielders.
And as for the bullpen, those guys are always cheap for what you get. Valdez and Wilson seem to be the ones I would throw a little more money at, but for a team that finds diamonds-in-the-ruff quite often when it comes to piching, you know there will be plenty of cheap, servicable arms to throw in there.
If I get some extra time, I will break down the contracts year by year and show you how if we spend the same money that we spent when we were "competing" with Bonds, which is around $100M/yr, that we will have plenty of money to have Timmy-CC-Zito and still keep all the other young talent. In other words, we could start competing next year and continue it for a while.
