VIRGINIA BEACH

The proposal to build a $350 million arena near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to attract an NBA team is moving forward with behind-the-scenes meetings. Mayor Will Sessoms said he plans to update the City Council on Tuesday.

A representative of an NBA team eyeing a move to Virginia Beach has had meetings in Richmond with Gov. Bob McDonnell and the city, according to Warren Harris, the city's director of economic development.

Harris declined to say which team.

Two sources who were at a city department director meeting last Thursday said Harris gave a brief update on the arena and told the group that Sessoms and the governor had recently had meetings with the ownership of the Sacramento Kings and mentioned the Maloof family, which owns the team, by name.

Those sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the politically sensitive nature of the project. Harris denied mentioning the Kings or the Maloofs at the meeting.

"I did not disclose the name of the team or the name of team ownership," he said.

Sessoms and a spokesman for McDonnell declined to comment on the meetings with the NBA team's representatives.

Harris said the team that met with the governor and the city is interested in coming to Virginia Beach.

"Virginia Beach is the city in which they are highly interested in, and in comparing their options today, Virginia Beach would be one of their top choices," he said.

Since August, when the plan surfaced, sources have said the target tenant for the arena is the NBA's Kings. A spokesman for the Kings, Tony Hanson, wrote in an email Wednesday: "We have been contacted over the years by several cities and parties interested in the Kings organization. However, we are not going to comment on rumors regarding relocation of the franchise."

City officials also briefed Virginia Beach's General Assembly delegation on the arena on Oct. 25. The briefing was a general update, Del. Ron Villanueva said and that the delegation has yet to get a specific request from the city about what state support might be sought for the arena.

"It just comes down to numbers, and we're waiting," Villanueva said.

"It was really broad brush," Del. Sal Iaquinto said. "It was, 'Hey, we need to meet with you to let you know where we're at, and we might need to meet with you again.' "

The city is touting to state officials an economic impact report that showed the statewide impact of an NBA team in Virginia Beach would be almost $503 million a year, including almost $11 million annually in state tax revenue and the creation of 3,700 jobs.

The Beach is negotiating with media and sports giant Comcast-Spectacor to build the 18,500-seat arena near the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Comcast would lease and operate the building for 25 years. The parties are working on a term sheet to present to the City Council later this year or early next year.

Sessoms has said he wants any deal to be structured so revenue from the building pays its debt service.

A second study on the economic impact of the arena on the city is scheduled to be presented to the City Council on Tuesday. The council ordered it to check numbers in a study done by Old Dominion University economics professor James Koch. Koch's study said that starting in 2015, the arena would host 200 events a year with 1.3 million attendees. It said the arena would create 1,230 jobs while generating $98 million in revenue in 2015, including $66 million in Virginia Beach.

Two things:

1. I added a question mark to the title.
2. This is from the same quality source as the previous Virginia Beach "scoop" - http://www.kingsfans.com/forums/showthread.php?47582-Virginia-Beach-Kings-

Which leads me to this...

Personally I give no creedence to anything involving Virginia Beach.. Just not viable, the market size, the arena situation, how off-the-wall the mere suggestion of a professional team there is to me... all the rumors emanating from that are pure smoke in mirrors in my humble opinion.

The rumors from Seattle, and the Maloofs possibly meeting with the City officials or Hansen and you have my worry and attention.

But who knows, maybe the Virgnia Beach Kings will be competing for a Eastern Conference playoff seed 3-5 years from now (when pigs will be flying)

It was the Pistons and a Wednesday night, but there was something 7,000 people at that game last night (no chance it was 10,000 from the box score).

Crowds those size will push the Maloof to do something.

I agree on the crowd size.

What it should have been doing is pushing them to spend some money to be competitive again! That is the biggest downfall they have had - they can't afford to field a competitive team. Other than not being able to afford to help with a new arena, that is.

Looks like they just started a new design review for the arena up in Seattle

Does it mean the Kings are going there? No! But it does mean they are serious about bringing a team back there. Could expansion happen? Might happen with Silver at the head.

I think it's clear the maloofs will take the team out of here the first second they can. They've stabbed me in the back for the last time. I quit spending my hard earned money on maloof products this year.

You are not quitting on the Kings are you? Come on bro! You never know what can happen!

Worse case scenario.... How about the NBA and the City of Sacramento work together to build an arena and then have an expansion team to Sacramento? I would like that idea if it came down to it.

Anyone catch the interview Crandell had with KJ last night? I missed it, but it was supposed to have something to do with a new plan to get an arena and keep the Kings...anyone see it??

“If they want to retrofit Arco Arena, Power Balance Arena and now called Sleep Train Arena, then that’s great,” Johnson said. “We want to be their partner.”

“Now we’re not going to put public dollars into it,” the mayor added. “But there’s entitlements and permits, and a host of things that we can do.”

Yay, Mayor Johnson. Once again, the Maloofs put what just might well be a bluff out there and he has no problem calling it. Love it!

well the only good i can see from this, is that it might light a fire under the butts of KJ and the rest of our city to get something done, kind of like how the Anaheim situation did. but lets hope the Maloofs dont bail before it happens

2 things:

*This is a good thing KJ is calling their bluff in support...now...I wonder how long before Georgie responds??
*This shows the NBA that yet AGAIN, no matter how many times they screw us over as a city in the name of relocation, we're still here...our city and mayor love this team.

All it would take is for the Maloofs to follow through on ONE dang thing in support of keeping the team here and not leaving everything up in the air and fans will come back...its not rocket surgery.

You don't get it. The city has a plan. They can't do anything w/o the Maloofs being part of it.

ya well hopefully the maloofs are just trying to get the city to hurry up and get going on a new arena or something

Um, the City and the NBA had a plan to move forward. MSE flipped a 180 and after praising it as a plan for a new arena in Sacramento decided to shoot it down. This has everything to do with George Maloof and nothing to do with the City.

I just can't see another city giving the Maloofs what they want, it wouldn't be fiscally responsible for that cirty and if the Maloofs concern was for the city of Sacramento they should never entertain the thought elsewhere.

Pretty pathetic for the 2nd home game of the season. I once thought these guys knew what they were doing. They are going to bleed more dollars if they keep having attendance like this. Add in those fans that are not going to spend much when they do go, Also, its not going to get better since weather will start coming into play, the holidays, and just plain old middle of the season apathy. It couldnt happen to a nicer group of guys. Too bad it could be impetus for the team leaving. BTW, Didnt go to the game last night but I talked to someone who did and he said there really wasnt much as far as entertainment goes for halftime. (Not suprised since they are no longer Vegas bigshots) Very disappointed with the whole experience. Happy about the result.

In March 2010, the tried to move the team. In March 2011, the made an arena deal and then pulled it away like Lucy and Charlie Brown with a football. At this point, a lot of fans are done. Games will be better on the weekends or when the big teams come to town. If it's a bad team in the middle of a week, nobody will be there.

Virginia Beach Mayor Confirms Meeting With NBA Team
Nov 14, 2012 10:20 AM EST

While Virgina Beach Mayor Will Sessoms confirmed that he recently met with representatives from an NBA team, he declined to specify the franchise.

Several reports cited unnamed sources that Sessoms met with the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings' owners attempted to move to Anaheim in 2011, but were persuaded by league officials to remain in Sacramento.

The Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday heard two consultants' financial reports, Virginia Beach city spokesman Marc Davis said. The reports indicated that Virginia Beach is comparable demographically to a number of NBA cities, and that an arena would be a financial boon to the city and region.
