The 9th Wonder of the World - Flashlight del Mundo

#1
I got a 10,000,000 candle-power spot light for Christmas. The beam will warm your hands and blind small animals. I am sure that it could be used to read a newspaper on the far side of my little valley.

I propose an experiment.

On a night with high clouds, I could fire a beam up in the sky from my porch. I wonder if anyone living within 10 miles of Placerville might not be able to see the beam?

Any candidates?

Um...would it be entirely out of place for me to ask WHY exactly you got a 10 million candle spotlight for Christmas? Planning on signalling little green men on Mars or soemthing???

My dad used to have one of those (not sure if it was 10 mil or not) in his car. It plugged in to the cigarette lighter. He used it mostly to see wildlife late at night, but it came in handy a few times to tell tailgaters to back off (he never did this, but sometimes I drove his car!).

Maybe that's QD's way of telling Santa that he forgot to pass by his house on Christmas Eve.

My brother-in-law gave it to me, mostly as a joke. I have never seen anything like it. I think it might be useful for signaling airplanes while lost in the Iraqi desert. Perhaps, it would be useful in a small boat while drifting without power on San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. One could definitely scare the forest wildlife on a dark night. Otherwise, this light is too powerful to be of much value. I really believe that one could read a newspaper at 1/4 mile with it.

Mad D, are you in Folsom? There may be too much light pollution to see it from the west. Pollock Pines or Shingle Springs would be better observing spots.

I want one!!!!

There's this Laker fan who lives about three miles away. I'm thinking I could use it to make him believe there's a 747 about to land on his house.

The only other thing I need is a REALLY good sound system - and a recording of planes landing at LAX.

:D

A Lakers fan in rural Plumas County? He must be running from the Law. Definitely a transplant. There should be a Megan's Law style government outreach program that would let the decent and honest public know when there are Lakers fans living in the neighborhoods.

He's actually in Yuba County... and I think he's clinging to his "Laker fan" persona simply to deny the obvious. He's had me get him Kings tickets twice now and he took the whole family to the Wizards game as the family Christmas present.

I really don't want to be the one to break it to him, but I think the purple he's rooting for now ISN'T exactly surrounded by gold! :D

I'm in the Mather Field/Rancho Cordova area

I think there is far too much topographic relief and light between our spots. I am east of two hills in Placerville, and the Shingle Springs rise is a significant feature. Then there would be the El Dorado Hills.

Tell ya what, qd... I know which direction you're in. Next clear night I'll saunter on over to the lookout tower and wait for "the light."

:D

Could you put in a silhouette of a Bat or something so I don't mistake it for all the other lights?

I thought all the spotting towers were gone, or do you have a friend living in an abandoned one? The bat idea is good. I'll work on it.

Not all towers are gone. While funding has been almost completely curtailed, ours are manned during the fire season by VIPs (Volunteers In Prevention) who are members of the local volunteer fire department auxiliary. We have two up here - one in Challenge and another in the Oregon House/Dobbins area.

I'm in Pollock PInes, if you're still looking for someone.

I got my Dad one of these flashlights for Christmas and tested it out a few nights ago. WOW.

If this works, you will be able to see my beam, but I will not be able to see yours. I am down in a ravine, about 100 feet vertically below the ridge. Look towards the Placerville Airport at about 9:00 PM. Hopefully, they won't be running the airport strobe.

I am absolutely certain that my light beam will be visible from Camino Heights. It's a straight shot to my hill. As you drive through Placerville on Highway 50, look south, and as you are passing the Broadway Avenue exit, look at the ridge about 1/4 mile due south of the freeway. The PGE tower at the top of the ridge, the highest one, is located at the north end of my property. I will light-up that tower tonight at 9:00 PM.

Big science. I love it!

So I'll plan to be outside tonight at 9:00, and I'll be looking toward the west. Hopefully this will work!

Well, assuming that there will be no tall trees blocking my view, and it won't be snowing too much, I should be able to get some pics.

California Sees the Light
By Gary Goodscoop -- Bee Staff Writer
Published Thursay, December 30, 2004

Thousands of calls poured into authorities last night, as citizens throughout central California spotted a strange and mysterious light in the sky.

"I was sitting on my front porch, when something suddenly caught my eye", described Jason Justafella from Alilplace, California. "I was momentarily blinded by the intensity as I looked up at something unlike anything I've ever seen, yet it was somehow strangely familiar". Jason said he quickly dashed into the house to grab his camera. When he returned, the streets were filled with concerned citizens as they gauze towrd the majestic light above them. Jason captured the following image just before the light vanished.

Bigacity Police Captain, Bob Breerbrelly said that he's convinced this is an omen of sorts, but he can't put his finger on its exact meaning.

Actor Jack Nicholson suffered minor injuries after seeing the light while driving southbound on Interstate 5. "I was just driving down the road as I've done a million times before, when this bright light just lit up the sky behind me. I had to turn around to see the light, but as I was looking back to catch another glimpse, I rear-ended the truck ahead of me". Kevin Clulessly, the driver of the truck for Staples Office Supply, was just as bewildered. "Fortunately for Jack, the truck carries very little cargo these days" explained Clulessly. Jack wasn't amused.

That's friggin beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes. (to be uttered in the voice of Vinnie Falconi)

Well, I did it, but the weather is horrific right now. It's raining with little snow flakes. It is 41 degrees on the north side of the garage. On a night with high clouds, I think it will work. I peeled green paint from the PGE tower, and it was 300 feet away. There are small furry animals wimpering in the forest.

I wonder if someone can receive dual Pulitzers (writing and photography) for the same journalistic masterpiece?
