I thought that was understood or at least implied since Stanford has had its fair share of weeks at the top spot in the country. But you can go to see Stanford play anyday, but it's not everyday you get the number one team in the nation coming to town to play @ Maples too.

Meeting at the box office after the game? That works for me. I don't have a specific place to suggest to go to eat, but they've built up the number of places to eat around there significantly it seems every time I drive the streets leading to the campus.

Listening to the Kings post game show last night, I heard Coach T say he and Whiz are headed to the game on Sunday to scout. (I believe in addition to Zolman, Tennessee has another noteworthy senior in T'yesha Fluker) Koz said Kara will be there tomorrow as well. So Sacramento will be out in pretty good force 
In addition to the Chosen One, I've got my eye on Zolman - she's playing herself into a first round pick and also seems now to be hellbent on moving her stock up higher than our picks. I thought that might be a questionable proposition a year ago. She fits here, and if she or Lisa Willis from UCLA are available at our pick(s) or if we move up (a possibility I don't rule out either) -I'm going to say outside of the emotional attachment we all have to Chelsea and our attachment to her above average defensive ability, we may get an upgrade in some ways if we wind up with a player like either Willis or Zolman.

Right across the street from Stanford on the corner of El Camino and Galvez/Embarcadero is "Town and Country Plaza" which has a few decent restaurants including "Kirk's Steakburgers" has great heaping hamburgers and delicious fries if that's your thing.
California Avenue, just up El Camino south of campus, has a number of nice lunch places including "Mediteranian Wraps" where you can pick up inexpensive falafel, gyros, and other Greek lunch items.
Hunan Garden, further south on El Camino, is a great Chinese restaurant within 5 minutes of campus.
Finally, there are a bunch of restaurants along University Avenue, and you can take your pick among them.

What a wonderful day we had. Stanford did a great job against Tennessee, even though they eventually lost by 7. Tenn has the #1 ranking for a reason.
We saw and spoke briefly to Kara Lawson (and Danette). Krista Blunc, and several people from the Maloofs organization were also there. It was nice to see Coach Whiz (and his wife) and Coach T there scouting the players.
There were many people that carpooled down from Sac for the game. If the Monarchs had chartered a bus, we would have easily filled it.
Oh, and QueensFan, we went to Kirk's Steakburgers. Thanks for the tip. It was fantastic!

It was an outstanding game - I don't think the final score reflects how hard fought it was since Tennessee ended the game on a run and with a bunch of freethrows.
One call befuddled me, however. Near the end of the game, a foul was called away from the ball while a Tennessee shot was in the air. The shot was good, but the fouled player was awared TWO freethrows. I have seen this happen before in the NBA and it is treated like continuation, with the fouled player getting ONE freethrow. Is the rule different in college/for women? I would appreciate a clarification!

It was a very confusing call, and I have no idea why the refs did what they did. Hmm, yeah, glad I wasn't the only one confused by that call. This was a situation where there was questionable officiating and the balance of the calls in those situations tends to go in favor of the team that is more aggressive, which in this case was Tenn. There were calls in that game that defied logic or understanding. I apologize to Darla Fouts-Stevens for ragging on her when that actually wasn't her officiating that game yesterday. It was the unforgettable Melissa Barlow. The refs killed the momentum of that first half, at one point we had calculated that they had called a foul once every 30 seconds - which sorta kinda equated to once every damn possession.
Danette Leighton is a upper level front office person. As 6th says, there were A LOT of Monarchs staff there and the Monarch fan contingents sprinkled around Maples was sizable.
I also agree, Kirk's Steakburgers was an excellent suggestion.
That game was very entertaining, and very befitting of previous Stanford Tennessee matchups. I'll agree with point of view that Luv13 had in a conversation we had after the game, Vanderveer's late game tacticianing left a lot to be desired. I went to the last Palo Alto meeting between these two schools two years ago, and I was sitting next to a woman who as THAT game started to slip away from Stanford, started vehemently making her point (by vehmently pounding each element of her opinion into my leg) about how badly outcoached Vanderveer gets by Summitt late in their games.
Candace Parker is definitely for real. Candice Wiggins is still very very good. Zolman - if she were available at our pick would make a wonderful Monarch.
One other thing I noted when I got home yesterday and read the paper. In the sports section there's a picture of Kara sitting in the stands with coach Summitt and other members of her coaching staff - IN SACRAMENTO on a recruiting trip looking at a kid who plays for Sac High. If I remember correctly the player's name is Vicki Baugh. LSU apparently had some assistant coaches in town visiting her as well. Those are two pretty high caliber programs in our backyard this weekend - perhaps we might want to make another field trip to check out young Ms. Baugh on the court to see what's up with that? Maybe when the city or conference tournaments start? I'll make a mental note to check out the girl's basketball prep rankings to see where Sac High ranks.
I know we had some local girls head to Cal and San Jose St. recently, I also saw stories on one who signed her letter of intent to go to UC Santa Barbara. Our most recent McDonald's All American either finished or will soon finish her career at Vanderbilt.

Summitt, the winningest coach in NCAA history and winner of six NCAA titles at Tennessee, watched Baugh during Sacramento High School's 69-27 nonleague win over Valley.
Baugh was an all-state underclass selection last season and is one of the top juniors in the country.
NCAA rules prohibit Summitt, who was joined by former Tennessee player and current Monarchs guard Kara Lawson, from commenting on the 6-foot-4 forward. Dragons coach John Langston said Baugh hasn't shown any signs of being distracted by the attention she is receiving from some of America's top programs.
"It's amazing to see a player with her talent and still so grounded," Langston said. "She hardly lets you know (she might be distracted). She comes to play."
Baugh's skills are guard-like with her ability to dribble the ball, but she also can score inside. She averaged 16.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game last season and was named one of the 10 best sophomores in the country by USA Today.
Tennessee was not the only big-time program represented Saturday night. LSU assistant coach Carla Berry also was at the game.

How this woman got into the Hall of Fame that quick is beyond me. To her credit she did alot to put West Coast Basketball on the map.
But...
She is a good recruiter, but she struggled with that from 96-00 til she landed lil Nicky. And Wiggins is very quick and dynamic but she is the only noteworthy recruit in that program since Powell.
Pat Summitt on the otherhand could take Big Out of Shape Luv13, Slow Giuliana, my middle aged mother. lil Mama Bristow and the 4 year old twins down the hill and have the team in contention.
I know there are a lot of Tara fans out there. And I don't mean to be disrespectful of them or what she has done. But that is my observation.

As much as I love Tara (and I do love some Tara Vanderveer), that's not been a strength of her program. I'm not entirely sure how she managed to get Nicole and Candice other than those kids reaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllly must dig hitting the books. The undercurrent (which is also an argument used by the folks at Notre Dame) is that they can't recruit like the other schools do because their academic standards are so rigorous. I think Tara gets what she can out of who she is able to land. (I'm still heavy on the "Krista Newlin as the best Stanford post player E-VER by the time she graduates" bandwagon). But as a strategist, she can't hold Summitt's clipboard.
