Superstars and Uber salaries

I was just wondering if there is at least ONE superstar or star who took a salary that was under his talent level... im not talking about chances for rings and contending team. and im not talking about age either...

i mean at this point even scrubs can get 5 mil per year if they get the right agent and stuff.... i know its a business but sooner or later sleepers and REAL talents would soon fly out to euro and were left with overly paid stars like Arenas im pretty sure he isnt worth that much money.. and the list goes on and on...

lol remember when spreewell was offered a salary that was a lil above the MLE i think and he said he has a "family to feed"

so now i want to share ideas... while were in TDOS... im new here dont know any one... so i want to know what you guys think

who do you think is overpaid, underpaid and that stuff....

i remember peja was considered under paid for 7 mil a year.. now hes overpaid at 11mil and stuff :P

I don't know of anyone who has voluntarily accepted less than his FMV. With agents involved, it's almost always a case of pushing the total as close to the maximum as possible.

I do know of some players who are grossly overpaid. Kenny Thomas, of course, is the first one who comes to mind but I know people around here can probably name others.

Marbury and Szcerbiak immediately come to mind as overpaid. As for underpaid, I think of stars that are still on their rookie contracts, like Brandon Roy

Oh didn't you hear? Arenas left 16 million on the table. Whoopty-do.

Unless he's playing two years for free I don't think that will allow them to sign anybody significant, yet the scabs filling in for Mike and Mike were lauding him all morning.

karl malone and payton took huge paycuts to play for the lakers a couple of years ago....

Its actually not completely uncommon for those guys to slice a little off the top to help their teams. Duncan did it. Garnett. Shaq (although he was in decline and not worth it anyway). You can see Baron and Brand trying to work that angle for the Clippers. And there have been others. But they always slice a little (relatrively speaking). What Arenas did is typical -- he sliced $16 million off to help the team. $16 million is a ridiculously huge number, and more than almost anyone on this baord will see in their lifetimes. But it was in the context of still receiving over $100 mil. So yeah, he helped, took a bit less, but percentagewise its not that huge of a hit.

considering that it was their last years in the league i dont think that qualifies as a pay cut. i always thought the bibby deal was a little over the top, but i guess when you get that close to a ring you have to pony up some dough. i also think baron could have gotten a bigger deal than the one the clips gave him.

It's more common in football to see contracts restructured, because there's not as much guaranteed money in football and the contract structures aren't as rigid as they seem to be in the NBA. Tom Brady has restructured his contract a couple of times to help his team be able to retain other players, as have other notable players.

But I think it's kind of hard to really do anything like this in the NBA because you can't renegotiate mid-contract in the NBA the way you can in the NFL. So when a player is eligible for a new contract, he can't anticipate revisiting his deal in a three or four seasons. He has to take what he can get right then and there, because once it's done, it's done.
