Strange behavior

(I found this recently on an old hard drive. It ran in my local paper back in 2002. Since the great crash in 2004 destroyed all the old threads, I thought this worth sharing. Those were the days, my friends.)

Strange behavior

I wear purple; I have a bobblehead figure on my computer; the wallpaper on my computer screen has two very tall gentlemen in strange looking garb; I ring a cowbell at my TV screen; and I actually know a phrase or two in Serbian.

While this may sound a bit strange to some, if you know me, you understand the above comments completely.

I am a Sacramento Kings fan. My team is in the Western Conference Finals for the first time since the franchise came to Sacramento in 1985. I am living, eating and breathing for one thing - a victory over the much-despised Los Angeles Lakers.

The Sacramento Kings are, of course, a basketball team. A professional team with professional players. They are, though, a bit more.

In these days of scandal, horrendous behavior on and off the court, drug use, etc. the Sacramento Kings are a team you can be proud of and actually point to your child and say, “See, that’s what being an athlete is all about.”

Perhaps no other group of players epitomizes the word TEAM as much as the Sacramento Kings. Usually, in the NBA, if a star player is sidelined with injury, the team falters. Not so with the Kings. They have played and won without their All-Star power forward, Chris Webber, they have played and won without their All-Star small forward, Peja Stojakovic, and they have played and won without their starting center, Vlade Divac.

This is true team play at its very best and even those who generally don’t watch sports are finding it entertaining and exciting. As a regular participant at an online forum devoted to discussing the merits of the team, I am seeing new members show up every day. It seems the obvious joy these 12 young men get from playing this game is contagious.

This is a team that has risen from the very depths of the NBA. At one time, losing a game by less than 10 points was actually considered by many to be a moral victory. Not any longer. The fans and the players know they can win any given game and they fully expect to. They’ll live with an occasional loss. What’s remarkable is that those losses are now so few and far between.

It may not be the year the Sacramento Kings defeat the LA Lakers for the Western Conference Division, but if not it soon will be. Meanwhile, I intend to enjoy every single minute of being caught up in the playoff fever.

In two words...NAPRED KRALJEVI! (Translation: GO KINGS!)

That series was so heart-breaking. But I'm glad I the memories of that beloved team of Kings. The Kings of my competitive heart. :)
