Stockton Kings 2024-2025 Open Thread

Quick summary: Devin Carter is as advertised. Just a dynamo on both ends of the floor, constantly finding ways to make plays. He's fearless attacking the rim, taking contact from a driver on defense. ACTUALLY CONTESTS 3PT SHOTS, which is a damn miracle for this franchise. Obviously can't expect him to shoot like he did tonight, but he didn't look like he had any trouble getting the shot off, which was a concern with his set-up. Not up to full speed conditioning, but his quickness is apparent. Moves so well laterally and has a lightning quick first step.

Had so many plays like "Stops the transition possession, finds the shooter in the corner, goes and gets the O-Reb". Just a guy who makes things happen out there. It's very fun to watch.

Shot in the arm the big-league team needs for sure. Only one game, of course, but don't see any reason you wouldn't get this guy in a 20 MPG role from the jump.

It means little since it’s g league but impressive nonetheless. What I’ve found annoying is how kings media were so mad we drafted him because he was going to miss 30 games. If he is anything close to this level of player, imagine passing on him for that reason.
Kings media absolutely would’ve been furious if we had passed on him to draft Knecht or TDS or something and he went and had this debut for whatever team did take him

If he looked that good it means something nba players especially good ones should look like stars so it’s a great sign.

I think it's impressive purely from the stand-point of how long it's been since he's played an organized basketball game. Especially when he looked pretty well gassed the entire 2nd half with little to no legs.

We went to the game tonight and I agree with all of this. His handle needs a little attention at times (lost a couple of TOs) and definitely was gassed towards the end, but man did he have himself a game tonight. So much fun to watch.

Agreed. Anong all the criticisms of Monte, drafting Carter is at the very bottom of the list for me. How many times have we heard “you always draft BPA over positional need” in the draft?? I get it, we used to draft need over BPA when we were a bad team, and now we became a good team so drafting for need is more reasonable. But if Monte thought he was getting a great player at 14, I’m not mad at him for taking him even if he’s a guard.

And guess what? It looks like we are headed again to being a bad team. Which is precisely why you never draft for need, because you pretty much never know what your needs are going to look like 2-7 years down the line.

Take the best player and worry about the rest later. It's a lesson some here on this forum refuse to listen to, even with the Bagley pick and the Hali pick on our books.
