Spyware

also, when you look in your popup blocker settings, there's a window for addresses that you've allowed popups at. Are there any addresses in that window that you didn't authorize? Is comcast on the list? If it is, click on it and click remove.

Let's cross our fingers. ;)

That "allowed list" grows in the popup blocker settings over time just from the occasional authorizing of them here and there (which is fine), but it doesn't hurt anything to clear them periodically. Hopefully that's all it was.

rhuber, you are da bomb!!! :)

BTW - I ran your program too, and it detected 49 spyware which I have deleted. Thanks!!

Ok, I am really getting frustrated. When I went back to put in my comcast/my home page, I rebooted my system and then I open up internet explorer and guess what....its back!

rhuber, when I sent you my home page, did you restart your pc? Because that is what I did and that's how that pop up came back up.

see, I not da bomb... but I sure am lost.

This only happens on your homepage?

I wonder if Comcast knows anything about it...

I run a few servers on this machine -- I don't reboot much. I can give it a shot on my notebook later if I can yank it from my wife's lap!

I ran it on my moms machine a couple weeks ago and found over 1,400!!! It's the first time it was ever scanned by anything. It was like a new computer after that. :p

Now, my problem is happening intermittenly. And its only happening on my home page (comcast), but no other websites (yahoo, msn, cnn, etc...)

i'm scared to dl that sp2.. i downloaded it and then my other computer in Davis never rebooted (corupted a file) again so I had to reformat..

It couldn't hurt to ask Comcast if they have any reports about it.

I've heard of occassional issues with SP2 immediately after its release, but I really haven't heard of anything big since then. SP2 has an issue with Compaq (or was it HP) computers that come with XP preinstalled, but there's a downloadable fix for that on their site that you're supposed to install before sp2. Other than that... I haven't heard of many issues lately.

You might want to look into using Mozilla's Firefox browser. Less vulnerable to exploits, and blocks adware/spyware. Has tabbed browsing, and awesome customability too.

I've been thinking about it alot and about to install it. Thanks.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. The only way to completely remove the spyware off your computer is by removing Windows operating systems. Otherwise, it'll keep coming back and crippling more and more.

Rock - I think I'd be on the phone to the tech support group at Comcast. If that's the ONLY site tied to the problem I'd be very suspicious that it has something to do with THEM and not your operating system or browser.

To those using the GiantAntiSpyware Trial

When this thread was active, I directed a few people to a trial version of Giant Antispyware... a great antispyware program... but the trial has probably run out by now, and Giant Antispyware is no longer available, because it has been purchased by Microsoft with the intention of eventually incorporating it into new security features of windows systems.

Microsoft is now releasing a beta version of their new build of that product (for users of windows 2000 and windows XP). You can check it out here.

Note: I'm posting this only because this download (though still in beta) is the successor to the Giant Antispyware software that I directed some people to earlier, which may no longer be serving them - but was in fact, far superior than other antispyware products available, which I assume is why MS purchased it.

Whether or not you are inclined to use beta software (beta typically refers to final, or near final testing phase) is up to you... but I just wanted to give a heads up. The final version should be available soon.

Ha. Hahaha... Hahahahahaahaahaa.....

I write software for a living, and "typically" might be the operative word there. :D

so do I... which is why I was carefull about that. 'Beta' is a very loose term in this industry.

Did anybody see how Bill Gates pulled Ashley Simpson stunt at CES presentation few days ago :)

"During a demonstration of digital photography with a soon-to-be-released Nikon camera, a Windows Media Center PC froze and wouldn't respond to Gates' pushing of the remote control.

Later in the 90-minute presentation, a product manager demonstrated the ostensible user-friendliness of a video game expected to hit retail stores in April, Forza Motor Sport. But instead of configuring a custom-designed race car, the computer monitor displayed the dreaded "blue screen of death" and warned, "out of system memory." "

I used to have spyware...but I did a system restore and installed EZ Antivirus and StopZilla (which is one of the best popup/spyware blockers) Now my computer (which has comcast internet) runs faster than ever before!!

That's what I went to after my own spyware battles. No problems whatsoever since.
