Spyware

I have spyware on my system. I have tried to clean it out with ad-aware, spybot and norton and I still have it. Any suggestions?

All that I can tell you is God help you. The only thing that worked for me was reformatting and installing Linux.

I had it real bad one time and I was about at my wits end. I found some website and asked the guy a question and he said to restart(or start) your computer in the safe mode and then run spybot. I did it and sure enough it took care of it. I tried 3 other types of anti-spyware crap and it didn't do squat. I have the live update Norton anti-virus stuff and it picked up the spyware but couldn't get rid of it.

I have a ton of spyware. And I clean out my system once a week. Here are some of the spyware:

SearchWWW: searchWWW is an internext explorer toolbar and homepage hijacker pointed at www.searchw
BonziBuddy: which is extremely high
IBIS toolbar
Marketscoret Netsetter
CWS

I think I'll reboot my pc in safemode and run spybot. Any other suggestions (in case) this doesn't work.

Thanks

It's not enough just to use ad-aware and spybot s&d, you need to deinstall any programs you see listed in add and remove programs.

Spyware takes about 2/3 hours to remove when I do it on people systems.
A good tool to use is to have the programs on a PE CD something like Bart's PE.

Take care.

well, we had a ton of spyware earlier.. about last last month or so.. the computer was so slow.. my mom fixed it by calling our ISP and asking for a spyware blocker (it's free).. so now, after i use the internet, i just scan for spyware, then i delete them..

my computer's working fine, and of course, it's faster, too..

Giant AntiSpyware...

The best spyware removal software I've found to date is far and away Giant AntiSpyware from Giant Company Software. This thing gives your system quite an impressive scrubbing. There's a good news/bad news aspect to it though.

First the bad news: Apparently, Microsoft was just as impressed by the software as the rest of us, so they just purchased Giant Company with the intention of incorporating their suite of security tools into Windows OS (which may take some time). Until that time, the software is no longer available. MS does say that they intend to release a stand-alone version of it soon.

The Good news, if you want to give it a try... I can send you a copy of the trial version I downloaded just before MS purchased the company.

rhuber, I would appreciate it very much if I can get a copy of it. Thanks in advance.

Also, I just have to ask one more thing.... but please don't take this as an insult (I'm sure you can understand why I must ask). When you said you "installed" the software, does that mean you installed it, started the program and ran a full scan with it, or just installed it? Now, don't punch me if that sounds like an idiotic question, but it takes me a good 30-40 minutes to run a full scan, and there was a quick response time between our posts. I find that it isn't an uncommon thing at all for many people to think that this kind of software is used by simply installing it, so it's one of those things always worth double-checking. :D

I'm sure you see why I had to ask.

Thank you again rhuber. My pc is free from spyware.
Woohoo!!!!!!! Great job, rhuber! And, congrats, Rock! Don't we have just a great group here? I love these folks!!!

Glad it worked!

My job is done here.

Edit:
...and that line always worked so well for the lone ranger.

Well, guess what? I decided to reboot my pc and when I opened up internet explorer....that same stupid website pops up. I'm totally at a lost right now.

Persistent little self-seeding bugger isn't it.

Ok, back to the other question of your Operating System: Are you running Windows XP, and if so, do you know if you have service pack 2 installed?

Yes, I'm running XP and I have SP2 installed.

Wow, it's loosing me too. Between Service Pack 2 and Giant AntiSpyware, I haven't run into anything yet that the two combined hasn't licked.

Are your security setting for Internet Explorer set to medium or higher (though I doubt that would really help here... I'm reaching now). I'll have to ask around on this, but even that is hard to do unless we can figure out what process is triggering this. Unless you can see a suspicious process running when you click the Processes tab after hitting cntl+alt+delete... I'm getting a little stuck myself.

You and me are both getting stucked. Now, let me add another little interesting find to the list.

I decided to do a little experiment. I changed the home page of my internet explorer from Comcast/my home page to my.yahoo.com and guess what? That stupid site does not pop up, however, when I set the comcast back to my home page, it reappears. I decided to do it a 2nd time and change it to msm.com and there was no pop up, however, when I went back to comcast/my home page, it did. Very mind boggling.

That helps... that suggests that your problem is (or at least may be) external, not internal.

Is your pop blocker that came with serviced pack 2 working to keep most, if not all other popups at bay?

Is your popup blocker enabled? If you're not sure, open your browser (assuming you're using Internet Explorer), click TOOLS, and hover over "PopUp Blocker". You should see "Turn Off Popup Blocker", and "PopUp Blocker Settings". If you see instead "Turn ON popup Blocker", then it's off and should be turned on.

If it's on, go ahead and click Popup Blocker Settings, and look at the Filter Level dropdown at the bottom. Make sure this is set to medium or high.

Again, I'm reaching here... but I'm trying!

When I clicked on tools, I saw "turn off popup blocker" and popup blocker settings. So, its good, right? I know your trying and I appreciate all the help you given me. The popup blocker is set to medium...and I actually changed it to high.

What's the URL that your homepage is set to, I want to see if it triggers a popup for me. Or is it a custom members-only kind of page?
