Back with Bucks, Skinner bashes Blazers

MILWAUKEE -- Brian Skinner says he's comfortable being back in Milwaukee after getting more than his share of rainy weather and "contagious" apathy in Portland at the end of last season.

Skinner, who was traded to the Bucks in a four-player deal July 31, sounded happy to be free from teammates in Portland who he said simply stopped trying.

"It's contagious, and it carried like wildfire throughout the whole team," Skinner said Monday. "Even players that were really dedicated and really wanted to be there, just made it seem like it was for naught."

In the midst of a major offseason overhaul after a league-worst 61-loss season, the Trail Blazers shipped Skinner, point guard Steve Blake and center Ha Seung-Jin to Milwaukee for forward Jamaal Magloire.

Skinner, 30, had a successful stint in Milwaukee during the 2003-04 season and said he's happy to be back.

"I love it," Skinner said. "I played here before. I like the city, love the fans. And I played with the majority of the guys that are here."

And after missing the playoffs last year, Skinner hopes he's joining a team on the rise with the Bucks, who did make the playoffs.

"Knowing they did that this year, I'm only looking to get better next year," Skinner said.

Skinner was traded from Sacramento to Portland in a four-team, nine-player trade last February. He said he enjoyed playing for coach Nate McMillan but found it hard to deal with so many teammates who obviously didn't want to be there.

Skinner said the signs of apathy were everywhere.

"It's everything," Skinner said. "From the way you just sit down at the dinner table, to how you walk, you can just tell when a player [has] not really lost their passion, but just lost their initiative to go out and try to win. And it just goes through everything. It goes through everything and completely destroys a team."

Skinner said he respected veteran teammates such as Voshon Lenard and Theo Ratliff, but didn't care for some of the team's younger players. Skinner didn't single out any specific players by name for criticism.

"They come in with that ego, and sometimes you have to put them back in their place," Skinner said.

But Skinner said none of those criticisms apply to Blake, who started 57 games at point guard for Portland last season.

"He showed good leadership," Skinner said. "Even with all of the frustrating things that were going on, he still had the passion of wanting to go out and play hard, even practice hard, and do those things. He's going to bring a lot to the table."

Skinner didn't seem surprised that he was traded, but said he wouldn't blame Blake if he took the move as a "slap in the face."

Skinner appreciated getting a chance to play in Portland, but said it is time for him to move on.

Besides, he said, "It just rained a lot. What can I say?"

Even without Magloire, Skinner joins a crowded frontcourt. The team returns last year's No. 1 pick, center Andrew Bogut, and traded for Charlie Villanueva in the offseason.

Jeez. Sorry we shipped you there, glad you're escaping.

Hrm... Let's see. Who COULD he be referring to? Hrm...

Good for Brian. He deserves to be on a competitive team.

Infact I saw him today back as a sophmore playing on the USA Select team vs. the 1996 Dream Team from July 6 1996. Had these funny Horace Grant-esque goggles on.

Skinner/Bogut/Villanueva/Gadzuric/Joe Smith - definitely quite solid. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the guys not named Villanueva and Bogut are gone.

I figured it could be one of those guys or both, or maybe Telfair and Jack were also a-holes.

Jarrett Jack is not a bad guy, he's actually a class act and the organization and city love his approach. From what I've gathered on him, I agree. Should be a very solid PG someday too.

Telfair I haven't heard anything bad about, and from what I've seen, he's a good kid.

Yeah it's probably a combo of Miles and Randolph. Didn't Portland just give Randolph a fatty contract last year?

While I agree on Jack, I totally am on the opposite end of the spectrum with Telfair.

I think it was just a couple of weeks ago that Telfair (who just got traded to Boston) complained about someone to unretire his number so he could use it. The whole board was up in flames chastising Telfair about it. Telfair does seem to have a bit of an ego.

And don't forget, Telfair is the cousin of Stephon Marbury. I don't think I need to go any further on that.

Well, I'm not for that or against it, so I don't really care about that stuff. I haven't heard much about that anyways since the week it happened. Yes, there was the gun thing in his pillowcase, but he claimed it was his GF's. Believe it or not, it's been a dead issue for awhile. I forgot about it after the week or so it happened, just remembering it now because of specifically discussing Telfair. Don't remember reading that as an issue with Boston, though.

Don't think it's relevant he's the cousin of Marbury. I haven't gathered anything of significance towards that in the news over the last 2-3 years.

Did Skinner just answer the question everyone has been asking regarding the Jailblazers? Sounds like it. Blame it on the rain. Yeah, I just went there.

Portland will be interesting with magloire, alridge, roy leadin the way with randolph. Anyways that 2000 blazer team was sick , they got shafted just like us ,then they slowly lost everybody .

Skinner isn't being very classy. I mean yes there were problems but look at all the moves the blazers have made. They moved Telfair and they're trying to move Miles but trashing the team and players isn't going to make it any easier for them to move Miles.

I really liked that team with Pippen, Sheed, Sabonis, Steve Smith, Bonzi, etc. That's actually one of my favorite past teams and I wish they had beaten the lakers that year, I was pulling for them.

He didn't say who it was though. The rest is just assuming. But, even before this most in general knew about Miles/Randolph's problems.

The guy was being truthful and respectful about his time with the team there.

I'm happy for Brian. I wish we still have him, I know our new coach would use him unlike Adelman who had him ride the pine even when he came off the bench and sparked us.

Didn't he get suspened for trying to bring a gun on the team plane.

I already mentioned that and commented on it.

How are they the jailblazers anymore? They got rid of all the criminals. Now they have to get rid of the bad attitude(Miles). It's just not fair to call them the jailblazers when they get rid of Sheed, Damon, etc.

Randolph and Miles are the two who still fit the profile. Unfortunately they are also the two starting forwards. But clearly/obviously Portland management is doing its best to exorcise the last of those demons.
