IMO, what was wrong was hiring Malone instead of a true and tested very good coach right in the very beginning. But I cannot blame him for trying out on Malone. We were far away from contending and a trusted and cheap rookie coach may suffice to farther the player's development. And I had come to think probably Vivek thought why not give a chance to his trusted and very good friend defensive coach Malone? We all know Malone was good. Even Vivek was thankful for Malone's contributions in defense. But sadly it turned out he was not good enough. And let us not be biased revisionists because we all saw what was wrong and what we saw were fully documented in the countless/numerous threads in this board. Malone showed flaws in his ability to make adjustments in other areas of his coaching. Our offense were very predictable, poor rotations, and in-game adjustments were just horrible. He was not the perfect coach that some of us seemingly insinuate (as evident in our inability to move on without Malone and our propensiy to crucify Vivek/FO for the move). And he is also not Cousins' biological father for Cousins to rebel about or care that much too. Cousins had moved on. So, moved on. The fear that a brute player like Cousins going into a dramatic depression because he lost his favorite coach should be the least to worry about - especially when it is out now that Malone was not a strong believer in Cousins when he got here. It was the best move to replace Malone with someone better sooner or later. It so happened Corbin was an assistant coach with real NBA coaching experience. So, they took a chance on Corbin too, which I think is the right move to do to at least give a chance on someone second in line and within the organization and with actual NBA coaching experience. All done while at the same time being flexible and looking for a true and tested coach. So, these moves were actually not too bad and were very good gestures to both Malone and Corbin. Again, I don't believe Malone or Corbin were maliciously maligned or their careers were destroyed for us fans to crucify Vivek/FO.
Another thing, if ever PDA gets fired (as some of us are predicting) don't get your hopes too high that there would be a specific admission of mistake on hiring him too. I think Vivek is not that kind of a monster to kick PDA some more while he is down or while PDA just got fired (just so he could satisfy some fan's ego). We have to realized some things are really bigger than us fans. I really believe Vivek knows that is the least honorable thing to do to someone who just got fired - ruin a person's reputation some more by giving unnecessary apologies and endless negative specifics on why a person got fired.
BTW, to me the team did not completely fell apart. But it will fall apart, because of the endless conspiracy theories some of us fans wants to propagate. These concocted negative theories that's meant to portray the franchise as chaotic shows it affects Cousins. And we all know if Cousins go, that will be a hell of a set-back for the team.
I guess what I am saying is I see the whole thing as necessary moves that sadly temporary set-backs are consequences - ALL for the betterment of the future of the franchise. And there will be more coming.
