Who out there would you want? They could be a free-agent, restricted free-agent or even a player who is unhappy and wanting out.

For me, I would love to have Okafor from the Bobcats. I think he would be perfect for the Kings. He would complement Hawes and Thompson very nicely.

Here is what is being said about Okafor:

"As things stand now, Emeka Okafor will be an ex-Charlotte Bobcat by the end of next season, if not sooner. Negotiations between Okafor and the Bobcats are at an impasse, an informed source told the Observer, with the team offering less now than the $12million-plus annual salary it did a year ago. A restricted free agent, center-forward Okafor now wants a sign-and-trade to another team, the source said, and is not inclined to remain with the Bobcats long-term. Okafor's alternative would be signing a one-year qualifying offer with Charlotte, worth roughly $7million, then becoming an unrestricted free agent in July 2009."
I am not sure what it would take to get him, it might not even be realistic. A three team deal might need to happen because any trade Sacramento is in most certainly involves Artest, and the Bobcats have Wallace.

Who do you want?

If we were to aquire Okafor, who would start? Okafor or Thompson? Thompson has more overall offensive skills than Okafor, but Okafor is a more proven commidty. I like Okafor, but I'm not really sure his style of game fits with the type of team the Kings are trying to build.

Basicly, Okafor is a one trick pony. Don't get me wrong, its a good trick, but its his only trick. He has no outside shot, and he's not a good passer. He averages over 2 turnovers for every assist. Considering that Petrie puts a lot of emphasis on moving the ball, which requires passing, I don't think he would even consider him, especially at the price he's going to demand.

The dude can rebound though.

he'd be a really bad pickup unless we start the guy. i'd assume he'd want a bulk of the minutes so he could showcase his talent for a new contract. i definitely would not give this guy a huge contract for his defensive presence

Thinking that Thompson will burst out of the gates as the starter this year may be a bit optimistic. Recall that he's just turned 22 and hasn't played a single game against NBA competition. In our current state, Moore and Miller are the starters, with Hawes, Thompson, and Williams getting the lion's share of the backup minutes, though who knows how it will be distributed just yet.

That said, if we were to get Okafor, he would start next to Miller, or next to Moore if Miller were included in the deal.

I wasn't refering to immediately. I was thinking down the road in a year maybe. My bad, I should have explained myself better.

That makes more sense. Right now I would guess that Moore is the starter for the first half of the season or so. At that point, presuming Miller is still with the team, I guess that either Thompson or Hawes will have shown enough to supplant Moore at the top of the depth chart.

As far as Okafor goes, he strikes me as a starter for the next five years pretty much regardless of where he goes. Maybe a front line like Gasol/Bynum would bring him off the bench, but I suppose that if he came to the Kings either Thompson or Hawes would be coming off the bench even four years down the road unless both of them were to blossom tremendously.

J-Smoove!

A frontline of Smith/Thompson/Hawes would be one of the biggest in the league. A pretty young core too.

Smith is athletic, getting better at shooting (needs to work on selection though), and a great defender (1.5 steals 2.8 blocks a game). Not to mention he'd be great on the boards at the 3.

You know, I wouldnt mind trading Martin either as long as we're getting a two dimensional player in return.

Of course if Martin continues to work on other aspects of his game besides scoring that could be a trade we'd regret a couple seasons down the road.

If you can get a guy like Okafor at a reasonable price or in a sign in trade for our vets, you do it. It's not like we're going to sign a guy much better than him in 2010. If Thompson turns out, then we have too many good big men, a problem most teams would kill to have. We trade whoever doesn't fit for a PG or SF to balance the roster. But at this point, the only sure thing really is Martin at the 2. Everything else is a ? and is by no means decided, either for the short or long term.

Just to be clear, I didn't say don't get Okafor. I said that if we do get Okafor, he will definitely start for the foreseeable future unless something spectacular happens with both of our young bigs. I wouldn't mind being three deep in the frontcourt at all.

Sure, the ultimate fantasy is that Hawes/Thompson turns into a homegrown resurrection of Divac/Webber, but you don't shy away from a guy like Okafor, if you can get him, based on hopeful projections of the kids.
