At least one NBA executive figures the Celtics will trade the No. 5 pick before the draft rolls around June 28, and he sees Phoenix as a prospective partner. The Suns are looking to dump salary and picks. New Phoenix president of basketball operations and general manager Steve Kerr has the No. 24, No. 29, and No. 59 picks. One of the scenarios raised by the executive had Shawn Marion and the $33.6 million and two years remaining on his contract headed to Boston for the No. 5 pick and Theo Ratliff, who has one year remaining worth $11.7 million. The Celtics would throw in another player or two with one year left to make the money work -- say, Delonte West ($1.9 million), Tony Allen ($1.9 million), or even Sebastian Telfair ($2.6 million). One way or the other, Celtics assistant executive director of basketball operations Leo Papile predicts a lot of deal-making in the days and hours preceding the draft, because there are teams with too many picks and teams with no picks. Look for an organization like Indiana, without any picks, to try to deal its way into the mix.

That makes two of us. I wouldn't mind having the fifth and tenth overall picks for this year's draft as we rebuild.

We'd need Ainge to be dumberest-est to get the #5 for Bibby. There's no way that's happening even if we take on Wally.

I know that D'Antoni is pretty interested in Jianlian, this would be their way of getting him I am sure, but is it really worth the cost of Marion. Then again, they are dumping salary. If I was a Suns fan this kind of trade is going to hurt.

Well, that just isn't the Suns. You can't double dip, you choose a style and their style happens to be one where a post presence isn't the focal point. They have players that excel with in that defined style. This is a cost cutting move, this deal won't most likely bring them a post presence anyway.

The Suns will be paying major tax if they keep things the way they are. This could be the beginning of the end of this current Suns run. Of course the bright side is they have a #5 pick to build on + guys like Barbosa, Amare, etc during the aftermath if this deal goes through.

The suns do need a quality Center, but giving up Marion leaves a gaping hole and removes one of the best all-around players on their roster. Marion is an above average defender, a superstar rebounder for his size, and an above average scorer. Steve Nash isn't getting any younger. Their window to win a championship is closing in the next two seasons. They need to keep what they have and try to win a championship. If things don't work out next season, then you consider making a big move. I don't remember exactly, but doesn't Atlanta still owe them a first rounder? Did that get pushed back to next year?

Yes, Phoenix will receive an unrestricted first round pick from Atlanta in '08. The Hawks had better hope they don't utterly suck again, or they're really gonna regret it.

We're talking a move of Vin Baker type proportions to get Ainge to give up the #5 for Bibby.

It might take a Danny Ainge - Isaiah Thomas collaboration to pull something like that off.

They don't need a post presence on offense. They need to play better defense all over the court. Their offense is fine, especially with Stoudemire back. They just can't stop anyone when the game gets tough. Bibby proved that in the big win late in the season, and Bruce Bowen did the same thing in the playoffs.
