Second tier players? (split from Okafor thread)

Don't be so sure that capspace is meaningless. We aren't signing Lebron, but theres plenty of second tier guys that are worth investing in.

You know, a hard working big man that rebounds, blocks shots, and isn't a liability on offense. Someone like Emeka Okafor... :p

I've attached a listing of the 2010 free agents at the top of the forum. I alphabetized it just to be different.

I did notice one thing. We might actually be able to corner the market on guys with the last name "Thomas" if we played our cards right...

:p

Clearly, Okafor compares very favorably to all big men on the FA list not named Bosh. The only sticking point is his long and expensive contract. Being a simple expiring contract trade, is he worth overpaying to get someone better than off FA?

someone better named...?

Kwame Brown? Brad Miller? Aside from Bosh, Lebron, and Wade the big man FA list is pretty horrible.

I don't think free agency is the place to find the big man that fits our needs this year, just not the right time there. I think there are a good number of potential guys in the draft, but who knows which will actually come out and which ones will not. The is also the problem of developing a big man through the draft which would probably take a few years.

Exactly!!!
Anyone who wants to pass on this trade, please throw out some names of big men we can acquire in the next 2 yrs that are better than Okafor. I can't think of any on the FA market.

Other option is the draft. We aren't getting a top pick this year. We could draft another big with potential, but it will take 2-3 yrs to pan out, if we're lucky.

Darko Milicic
David Lee
Patrick O'Bryant
Udonis Haslem
Kyrylo Fesenko
Marcus Camby
Luis Scola
Steven Hunter
Etan Thomas
Fabricio Oberto
Sean Marks
Amare Stoudemire
Chris Bosh
Eddie Curry
Chris Wilcox
Kenyon Martin
Kris Humphries

These are most of the younger one's. I left out the Brian Cook's and Mark Blounts of the world. Take your choice. I would say that Okafor is better than 95 % of those up there.

And no one on that list really offers what we are looking for (Etan Thomas maybe?). Amare and Bosh are guys we could be interested in because they are stars despite not being the greatest fit as far as skill set goes.

I don't know how young Oberto, Sean Marks or Kenyon Martin really are in basketball terms;).

I think most doubt comes from his contract. Its steep for someone who is not a star. Not saying we shouldn't do it, just that it can be hard to swallow.
