Team beginning to show cracks

By Percy Allen
Seattle Times staff reporter

DETROIT — In the aftermath of what appeared to be a perfectly understandable defeat on the road against the defending NBA champion, a corrosive and perhaps divisive element emerged from the visiting locker room at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Sonics returned to Seattle last night with a 2-1 record after a 102-95 defeat to the Detroit Pistons that ruined their hopes for a sweep on their three-game East Coast trip.

They also returned as a splintered team that has separated into cliques and is spitting venomous remarks about each other. They returned with a Northwest Division leading 43-20 record, but far more questions than answers.

And they returned with Rashard Lewis, their All-Star forward and co-captain, questioning the motives of teammates and insinuating that a few players would rather score points than win games.

"It's frustrating when everybody is not on the same page," he said. "It seems like guys were on different agendas tonight. Some guys were trying to win and some guys (weren't). It just seemed like we weren't playing together.

"Just looking at it from our standpoint, we felt like it was a bad loss. We just didn't play our style of game. Guys have different attitudes on this team. I don't know what the problem is, but we've got to solve it."
Lewis declined to name who he believed the offending teammates were, but one Sonic, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said several players are upset with both All-Star guard Ray Allen, who made 6 of 11 shots and finished with 20 points, and forward Vladimir Radmanovic.

"Too much one-on-one stuff and not enough ball movement," the Sonics player said. "You saw that game just like I saw it. Nate (Sonics coach Nate McMillan) talks about that all the time. Move the ball. But some of us in here don't do that."

McMillan never singled anyone out, but said the Sonics played one-on-one basketball at times.

McMillan praised Lewis, who led the Sonics in scoring for the fourth straight game with 26 points, and center Jerome James, who tallied 12.

"You can look at a stat sheet and say that this guy had a good game, but when you look at it closely, you can just realize that this is what happens in this league," McMillan said. "It's all about helping together and working together out on the floor."

Allen, who seemed to play his normal game, bristled when asked about his shot total.

"No, I'm not getting enough looks," he said. "You've got to talk to the coach."

Allen's shooting didn't have as much impact on the game as Detroit's 47-31 rebounding advantage, Chauncey Billups' game-high 32 points and a critical turnover by Daniels, which began a comedy of errors for the Sonics.

"We had this game won," Allen said. "We were up three with two minutes left and we just gave it away."

Seattle led 90-87 before Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace ripped the ball away from Daniels in the backcourt and raced in for a dunk that cut the Pistons' deficit to one with 2:23 left.

On the Sonics' next possession, Radmanovic botched a pick-and-roll play and tossed the ball to Wallace. Detroit took a 91-90 lead seconds later when Wallace scored two of his 24 points on a midrange jumper.

Radmanovic missed a three-pointer that led to Tayshaun Prince (18 points) connecting on two free throws, which put the game out of reach, 96-90, with 41.3 seconds remaining.

Still, the Sonics didn't grumble about their last-minute miscues nor were they overly impressed that Detroit (40-23) won its 10th straight home game in front of a soldout crowd of 22,076.

Instead, they vented about their lack of cohesiveness.

"We can't blame our offense; it's not that," Lewis said. "It's just how we run our offense. If we're setting good picks, if we're running through all of our options and if we're getting easy layups. It's just a number of things we've got to execute to make our offense work instead of taking a quick shot when you catch the first pass.

"It's not just one person, it's a collaboration of everybody. Some guys thinking they need a shot if they hadn't gotten a shot in a while. Taking quick shots. We've just got to get back to playing team basketball and moving the ball around to the open person instead of holding on to it, including myself. It's everybody."

When asked when he first noticed the separation, Lewis said: "I don't want to say it's the first game. It's been slowly creeping in. It's getting towards the end of the season."

Most of the season, the Sonics seemed immune to the backbiting and selfishness that usually accompanies a team with eight players who will become free agents after the season.

"I don't want to say it's cause a lot of guys are free agents," Lewis said. "I'm hoping that's not the reason because we're going the playoffs, then it's going to be a total mess up.

"We've got to continue playing the way we've been playing at the start of the season. ... If we get beat in the first round and we have a terrible second half of the season, then nobody is going to get their part. You've got to have success as a team for everybody to either get paid or to go where they want to go."

It's so nice to see innuendoes, unnamed sources, etc. used in a story NOT about the Kings.

:D

So, Seattle is starting to crack?

I'm too lazy to go back through all the threads and find it, so I'll just ask a question:

How many of you predicted this a long time ago?

:D

I won't say I predicted it but I did note some time back that with 8 FA's on the team it was unlikely they could lead wire to wire or go far in the playoffs given the split nature of their personal agendas.

::RAISES HAND HIGH:: ive said it over and over and over again...i believe my exact words have been "I have total confidence in the fact that by the end of the year the Seattle Supersonics will have a meltdown" :)

it started last week with their 3 game losing streak...hehehe...that and FDF shannagins with Coach McMillan

Did anyone here how DF fouled out the other night against the bulls in 6 mins...6 fouls in 6 mins...but i will say that Joey Crawford was a ref..so that has a tad to do with it im sure....but he had at least 2-3 offensive fouls...you'd think he'd adjust somewhat especially in sucha short time frame....

actually Dallas hasn't been as brilliant as they were before the all star break...i mean they have to be like a .500 team since after the break...maybe even a little under...::goes to find out::

Supersonics are getting awfully close to earning the "Queens" label. First they get outplayed and loose to the Bulls. After the loss Ray "cry baby" Allen cries about the lack of calls and how he was slapped and held all night.

After his public outcry, Him and sonics get the"superstar treatment" the next game which happens to be against the Bulls on the road. Sonics end up shooting 44 freethrows.

The Sonics are soft, they can't handle tought D, especially that big crybaby. I don't feel bad for them....i hope we play them in the 1st round and kick their *****.

... you didn't have to give them our old derogatory label, you couldv'e called the the super softees or super pieces of **** (no offense to sonic fans just trying to make my point)

*****.

Ray shot total of 4 foul shots in the last game, two of them being technicals. I wouldn't call this superstar calls. Everybody tells us "Live by 3 die by 3". "You cannot go to line by jacking up shots". Chicago shot 25 3 pointers that game. And still the foul difference was just 3. It was our 2-3 zone defense that killed Bulls. They cannot hit a shot from outside. This is not our fault, it is their inability. If you say that Allen is whining after Friday's game, I am not sure how it is described what Chicago and its fans are doing after the last game.

Are we breaking down? Well... I don't know, but we still have winning record after all star break even though we have a tougher schedule in the second half of the season. Still we almost locked the NW division.

You may not want to believe this but for a team which even couldn't qualify the play-offs last year, I am very very happy with this team. Last year watching each game was painful. But right now, even I and my wife just had a baby, and I am having sleepless nights, I try to find time to watch the games rather than resting a little bit. Jumping up and down while watching the games holding my baby also helps my baby stop crying ;). Any game is a winnable game for us now, it does not matter it is against Spurs, Detroit or Phoenix.

Now, don't take this part personal in any ways: I understand that you're enjoying when we lose, but I am kind of proud of it, because last year, nobody would care if we won or lost games, but now it really matters for many people. That just shows that we are important... It is something we haven't felt the last 5-6 years.

Ironically, Seattle and Sac could very well line up for a first round matchup.

Congrats! :)

And you should be proud of your team this season. I would be too if I was a Sonics fan.

Still we almost locked the NW division.
Wolves won't make the playoff it seem like... :D

I like our chances with Sonics (I think likewise for Sonics). IF this is the first round, should be a fun series. :)

wow we lost a close game on a 2nf night of a back to back against the champs in their gym..yes we are really melting down..YAWN

we had previously just won 2 straight after a tough little streak at home

i believe my exact words have been "I have total confidence in the fact that by the end of the year the Seattle Supersonics will have a meltdown

Ah I see...winning the divison means a meltdown...got It:rolleyes:

I must add that Ray really needs to shut up and play...forget about free-agency and try and lead the team you have and the past 5 games he has taken bad shots and bricked alot the last few.

god damn we better not face houston in round one. They scare me more than any other team (not counting spurs)

Slim, do you think that article is trying purposely to portray Allen as a selfish/cancer type player?
In the end Allen always does turn out to be an "it's all about me" player. Seattle should have dealt him before the trade deadline.

Ray Allen is not happy with the team, obviously. Not sure about if there's anything between him and Lewis.

I think that Sonics have problems with their bench.Radmanovic,Daniels and Fortson aren't playing like they did when Seatle won many games.Especially I think of Radmanovic who was one of the favourites for 6th player award and now he totally suck...
I predict Seatle 2nd round of playoffs(1st round if they meet Kings :D )

Thanks Twix.

I am trying to teach him the basic basketball stuff when there is a game on TV. With his vision range just being a foot, I highly doubt if he understands what is going on around. But, I think he is a very good candidate to be an NBA ref with that vision.

Still thinking education is essential, I talk to him. He mostly responds to my comments by crying. I think his crying still makes more sense than ESPN crew so I prefer listening to him while telling him silently to calm down and hugging him. He looks at my face, or I hope he is looking at me, then I look at him. Meanwhile, something happens in the game, I miss that and I don't care. He turns his face somewhere else, then I start watching the game again. The whole thing restarts.

That is very true. Our bench does not give us the lift like they used to anymore. AD is still solid, but Danny slightly faded. Actually, Collison and somehow Jerome is playing very well these days. It cut Danny's minutes.

You are especially right about Radman. After his wrist injury, he is struggled a lot. After a long time we finally saw a decent game from him in the last Detroit game, but I doubt his consistency yet. Being a 6th man is a far stretch for him right now. AD has more chance than him. But, if nobody from Seattle gets the 6th man award, then I want Hedo to get it.

Oh please! Yes you are winning the division...by a mile i might add...and that distance you gained from the start of the year....you guys are still a great team and you're still sitting pretty in that 3rd PO spot...but you guys have also been really consistent when it comes to winning...so any one week two week span like you've just endured to come out at with the record that you did IS a meltdown of sorts...and quite frankly you aren't in the clear yet...there has been turmoil as far DF and the coach have been concerned...there has been Rays constant whining about who plays dirty and who doesn't  (Ray, I don't won't to hear you talk about who on the other team plays dirty when you have the dirtiest player in the league coming off your bench)....believe it or not those things effect play....IMO Seattle has been a team all season that when teams went to play they felt like they had to work very hard to win and even then they might not win...but i feel now teams are looking at Seattle and saying we have a better shot now of beating this team than any other time before...just my oppinion love it or hate it i don't care

In this type of a series, I definately like our chances with Skinner and Thomas. They can counter what Evans and Fortson bring. And the rest of our team can take care of theirs.

In a long season teams are bound to have their up and downs and yes lately we have not been playing prefect basketball but we have still picked up wins in between the bad losses and did so this week. Of course teams like to go after seattle now they know they are for real, alot of teams get up for the top ranked teams thats just the way it is. A meltdown is not losing a few games against top teams and then bouncing back by getting a few wins...thats the natural of NBA basketball..has nothing to do with melting down
