Sacramento Vacation planning: Help needed

We (family that includes little kids) are going to Sacramento for a few days of vacation to just visit kid-friendly places and museums. We have been to Sac a ton of times and are looking for fun and interesting things to do/places to go. Indoors is preferrable, but not required.

Any ideas?

My kids range in age from 1 to 6. We have an annual membership at the Zoo and fairytaletown is always fun. The Train Museum rules! What about Sutter's Fort or the Discovery Museum? Any experience with those?

I'd second the railroad museum, I'm definitely a bit partial to anything else in Old Sac having spent a disproportionate amount of my youth their at my mom's restaurant. I was also a big fan of trips to Sutter's Fort, I had heard it was on the verge of being shut down so I don't know what kind of cuts were made and if its changed. I definitely dreamt about the frontier days in my youth and I liked anything with the wand tours so I could take the tour at my own pace.

Is the Discovery Museum the hands-on science museum? If so, I'm sure your kids will love it!

Are there any particularly fun/good places to eat or neat places to stay?

Also, the Monarchs are playing Friday... should be fun. What are the "Premium tickets"?

If you have never done it, take the train ride out of Old Sac along the river - it returns you to the depot. Our little guy loves the train ride.

FYI - if you plan on return trips, and for anyone else living in the area - check out the Caboose Club for kids under 12 (unlimited free admittance to the museum and train rides for a year for $20, includes one adult, too!):

Actually, for one train ride and one museum entrance for a child and adult I think it pays for itself on the first visit.....

I believe the premium seats are either courtside or the first few rows. I would suggest just buying the cheapest then move down. They don't check the tickets. And honestly they just want butts in the seats right now. The kids will like Monty. If you get there early enough and nab the right staff person, your kid can be the recipient of a ball handed out by the players during the intro. They also throw alot of stuff out: balls, shirts, thingies....And it's all air conditioned!

I think the Discovery Museum would be great fun.

Sutter's Fort is a good place to go, although it's even more fun when there's a "living history" day going on. Then they can see people acting out the roles of people who would have been there is that time period. Mountain men, Sutter, a working blacksmith, women baking bread in the outdoor oven, etc.

The Effie Yeaw Center would involve inside/outside stuff. You can check what's available, inlcuding the July calendar here http://www.msa2.saccounty.net/parks/effieyeaw/Pages/default.aspx

Here's the July event schedule at Fairytale Town. The International Festival events could be fun. http://fairytaletown.org/going-on/calendar#July-2009

This week thorugh Saturday is Kids Week in downtown Sacramento. It's a good place to get some ideas generally. http://www.downtownsac.org/DSPAPP/V/promo/kids-week.html

The Crocker Art Museum has Wee Wednesdays for kids 3-5. http://crockerartmuseum.org/programs/youth_family.htm

The Sacramento Zoo's Ice Cream Safari is on July 25th

Of course, the Wiggles will be at Arco on the 21st.

I'll give some more thought to it tonight at home.

The Wiggles! They just aren't the same since Greg left... sad... Seen them twice at Arco... great show; best kids show I have ever seen.

If you're at the Zoo, Fairytaletown or Funderland and are looking for lunch, Vic's Ice Cream is only a few blocks north on 8th and Riverside.

Nothing like a hot dog sammich and a real milkshake. Vic's was high on my list of must-dos during my visit this past weekend, though we wound up going to the East Sac location (now Burr's, but its the same).

The Squeeze Inn has been in the spotlight recently since a woman in a wheelchair filed a lawsuit against them for ADA violations. What's sad is this woman has already filed four lawsuits (I think it's 4) against other businesses and settled ALL of them out of court with confidential financial settlements. Because of her suit, the owner of the Squeeze Inn will either have to make significant and almost impossible modifications to his business that he simply cannot afford at this point in time, or he'll have to move the business to a larger location.

I won't get into the details about it any further so as not to totally derail your thread, but check the sacbee.com archives for the past week or so. You might also find information on KFBK.com which gave it a lot of air time.

On the subject of eats in Sac, am I the only Sac-expat that feels the need to go to Jimboy's every time they're in town? And my wife was ordering all the fancy stuff off the menu which drove me crazy too. She even said the basic ground beef taco was just the same as a JitB Monster Taco. Crazy talk.

Or is it just me?

Jamie's Broadway Grille--also featured on DD&Dives is outstanding. I love Vic's as well....can't go wrong there with kids.

John's Incredible Pizza in Roseville, along with Sunsplash is great.

Have a fun weekend.

Wow! Lame! There is patio seating out back... that is where most people have to eat...

Is Jimboy's the one with the dripping yellow grease that soaks right through the paper?
