Sacramento signs Jamal Sampson

People seem lukewarm on this for the most part- benchwarmer, more Bobcat scraps- but 22 year old 7 footers don't come along every day. And it's not like he hasn't shown potential- he already has good rebounding numbers and can score decently. Think of it as a draft pick, cause this guy sure wasn't ready for the NBA when he entered. Almost no downside to this signing, I'm sure the Kings didn't spend too much on him and if he doesn't pan out we've still got Skinner. The mere possibility that we just aquired a future "elite center" (from hoopshype) pleases me. Not expecting much immediate big impact, but hope for the future. Nice move.
I complteley agree with you...I dunno how I've held back my excitement thus far.

Sampson could be HECK OF good, yay for young tall guys with real potential...! :D :D

Is it not at all nerve racking that we are picking the leftovers off the Bobcats? First Hart, now Sampson.
Expansion teams always pick the young and sometimes talented players, so no, its not nerver racking at all.

Well, as VF21 pointed out, he may not even make it past training camp, but I think he will be on the team. Unlike guys like Anwar, Alton Ford, etc. last year, and with the now larger player minimum, I think he is a King. I don't remember him playing much, but I do remember him with the Lakers. He is certainly a long/athletic player, I even remember him hitting a few jumpers. Could be a good 10 minute guy.

GOOD LUCK JAMAL AND WELOME!!!

Is the player that Elston Turner said we will get? Length, adn athletism? Wow, I was thinking of a Dalemberet, and then the Hoopshype report said Jamal Sampson is a comparision to Dalemert. Nice pick-up overall, but not what I was expecting for a big man like Turner was talking about.

From the Kings website (nothing really new except a non-informational Petrie quote - as if there are any other kind):

KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT FORWARD-CENTER JAMAL SAMPSON

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings today signed free agent Jamal Sampson, according to Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Sampson, a 6-11, 235-pound forward-center, appeared in 23 games last season for the Charlotte Bobcats, averaging 3.4 ppg (.452 FGs), 5.3 rpg and 14.2 mpg. His signing with the Kings marks his fourth NBA team in as many seasons.

“Jamal is a young player looking for an opportunity to demonstrate his talents, and we think he has the potential to help us in the frontcourt,” said Petrie.

After his freshman year at the University of California, Sampson was selected by the Utah Jazz in the second round (47th overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft. Before even suiting up for an NBA game, he was traded twice on June 26, 2002, going from Utah to Orlando to Milwaukee. Sampson played in five games for the Bucks, then signed with the Lakers as a free agent and played in 10 games for Los Angeles during the 2003-04 campaign. He was selected by the expansion Charlotte Bobcats on June 22, 2004.

Sampson is the cousin of ex-NBA player Ralph Sampson, who also played for the Kings.

With all due repect to GP, I'm totally underwhelmed by this Sampson signing. Ok, so I'm not expecting a Garnett or Duncan, but man... Hopefully, he's found a sleeper in this guy. Time will tell.

How can you be underwhelmed with a cheap 6'11 athletic guy? Upgrade over O-Tag for sure.

I don't think they plan on playing him much. I believe the rosters were expanded this season so if your going to have a stiff at the end of the bench it might as well be a front court player.

Doubtful that its an upgrade over Ostertag, but Sampson looks to be filling the Erik Daniels/Jabari Smith role. It's hard to be underwhelmed at somone who's just there to fill out the bench. Remember that NBA teams are supposed to average 14 guys on the roster this year. That's nearly three guys at every position. There's still a few more bench warmers to be signed, let alone guys who will not make the roster.

I think what it comes down to is that every NBA team needs at least two 7 footers on the team. With Ostertag out, we needed another one. Consider that niche filled.
Didn't we get rid of Ostertag to get Wells?

Good point. I think the expanded roster is going to result in more moves like this across the league. Funny thing is, with Adelman's rotation, there will be plenty of guys (Sampson being one?) riding the pine the whole year and never see minutes except maybe in garbage time.

Well, I for one am hoping that now we have some serious depth at a lot of positions, that the starters minutes come down a little bit. I think that is one of the things that Petrie is thinking in trying to make this team so versatile. Not only can you match up with almost any team in the league but you can play guys in multiple positions and give rest when needed.

I don't think he'll be an end of the bench guy honestly. Looking at his stats from the past two seasons, when he's played he's been a great rebounder off the bench. 0.7 Blocks per game in 10-15 minutes isn't bad either. I think you can mark him down for that 10-15 minutes backing up Brad, provided he stays healthy (remind me to stop saying things like that).

And if you look at who we've signed so far, it does show a dedication by Petrie to go after guys exhibiting toughness, defense, and athleticism this year -- just like he said he would. Bonzi Wells, Jason Hart, Ronnie Price, Jamal Sampson. These aren't big name guys, but they're guys who will do the dirty work on defense and on the boards and that gives the team a tougher attitude overall.

Stop thinking about championships. Petrie's job is to make the team better. Barring some kind of miracle, we can't reasonably expect to be a championship team next year. But we can be a solid winning team that's fun to watch and getting better.

Great Point sactown draftpick, I see a very deep team next year winning the division, because everyone in the division is down with the exception of golden state. We're going to be contenders again!!! I'm sorry if I'm getting over anxious and i know this guy isnt going to be an immediate impact but we have a very bright future.

I think the starters' minutes have been average already, there's no need for them to come down. Adelman's reputation for not using his bench is because he goes with a 7 or 8 man rotation, not because he plays his starters too much.

I think a little too much is being made of this signing. This is a very minor move, even less so than the Hart trade. I'm not jumping for joy because Geoff signed Jamal Sampson. Of course, I'm also not criticizing Petrie since this does nothing to affect the Kings ability to make other moves. What this is, is a very low risk gamble on a young, athletic big man with some potential left.

IMO, the best case scenario for Sampson would be for him to have a similar impact as other low budget pickups like Mo Evans or Scot Pollard. If Sampson could ever provide solid minutes as a backup/spot starter the way those guys did, I'd be ecstatic. At worst, he is training camp fodder. Either way, he is certainly worth taking a flyer on.
