Sac Bee: Trade talk involving Artest might be heating up

The link above about potential deals says the only viable one is for Nene who has testicular cancer. It also mentions New York and Miami. The way I see it, Ron has to guarantee that he will not opt out if traded and then it gets done. The salaries match well. I think better yet is that Kings sign him to an extension which helps solidify the deal in several ways.

Testicular cancer is one of the first cancers fairly easily cured with medications. Shouldn't be an impediment. Same thing Lance Armstrong had.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

artest for nene?? thats a horrible deal. i almost dont want to see artest traded cause i know we're just going to get garbage in return

Artest – who said for the first time on Jan. 19 that he is likely to opt out of his contract this season and become a free agent – told The Bee's Martin McNeal that he didn't foresee a long-term future in Sacramento. Petrie, meanwhile, indicated that he and Artest have had recent conversations in which the reality that he could be moved before the deadline was reiterated.

This is almost shocking in its clarity. When's the last time you can remember Geoff Petrie being that clear about the potential future of a player? If you said "never," you'd be close...

If Petrie could pull the trigger on the Webber deal, it appears he won't hesitate to pull the trigger on an Artest deal if it fits with HIS plans. And that's the key - we can banter and debate all day long but Geoff Petrie will do what he thinks is best for this franchise. It might be Nene, it might be some expirings, it might even be someone who doesn't even suit up.

What I believe is that Petrie - like a bunch of us - is tired of the ticking and doesn't want to wait for the explosion.

My problem has come up since reading Nene's record. He has had injuries, his stats are poor, and the cancer isn't quite as treatable as I thought. It is not a cancer to be overly concerned with but still a tad less than 10% pass away. Nene's salary is larger and is very long term; until 2012.

This is not so easy and not a sure thing. I certainly don't believe it is an equal trade skill vs skill and the outside risks seem to cancel each other out. Ron might be a cancer and Nene might still have cancer.

Agree on this. As of now, instead of taking Nene's huge, long term salary, it might be better to let Ron walk, and get nothing in return. If he decides not to opt out, he is a sure shot expiring, which might make him a bit more tradeable. If he explodes, it is a huge problem, and might invite suspension from the league/team. However, even that problem ends at worst next summer. With Nene, given the risk, we might be stuck for a long time.

Indeed! I thought I'd never see the day when one Mr. Geoff Petrie would show his hand with ANYTHING! Very un-Petrie. I really wonder who's called him inquiring about Ron so far? That's the $10,000 question...

Perhaps you aren't seeing Petrie's hand.
