RUMOR-Ron to NY?

Cory (North Dakota): Rick, The internet is buzzing with a rumor that claims you said Artest going to New York. Any truth to the rumor?

Ric Bucher: (3:11 PM ET ) Good to know the Homeboy radio program by Roger B. Brown in Dallas gets that much attention. I spoke with Roger yesterday and said that I'd heard a rumor that a Artest deal was in the making, but the terms I'd heard didn't work under the cap. That said, Artest would love to be in New York, Sacramento would love to move him and the Knicks would love to have him. When you have three parties who want something, I have to believe -- much like the Minny/Boston/KG situation --it's going to get

Anthony, NYC: You said you heard about terms of the proposed Artest to NY deal (eventhough they didnt work under the cap)... care to share some details? Is Isiah true to his word that Lee/Balkman are off limits for Artest?

Ric Bucher: (3:41 PM ET ) a first-round pick, Nate Robinson and either David Lee or Balkman. They'd have to include Malik Rose to make the numbers work and Sac only wants expiring contracts. Hence the problem.

It's Bucher, unfortunately. Anyone else reporting this and I might actually get a smidgen excited.

That is so sad, why report a rumor if it doesnt work under the cap? Jesus.

Anyway here is what he said in his chat-

Wow if we can get david lee that would be great, or balkman and a firts round pick although their pick probably wouldnt be as good.

Pssh, I'll believe it when I see it.

Dude he said we only want expiring contracts and that we want young players. Maybe he's lying but he's not wrong 100% of the time and atleast it shows Petrie WANTS to get something done to get youth+expirings+picks.

Well if they could get Lee (which I doubt) then I don't see the big deal in taking on Rose. It's not like we'll have any cap space this offseason anyways.

Have no idea whatsoever why taking Rose back would be an issue -- we will have no cap room this summer, and even just guaranteed that with the Moore signing, and at one point were supposed to be worried about freeing up money for the 08-09 offseason (summer after next), which is exactly when the rose contract would expire.

Assuming this is not a Bucherism (BIG assumption), wonder if this could be the first part of the post KG trade keeping-up-with-the-Joneses moves I was hoping for. All of a sudden everybody in the East has gotten a big wakeup call that sitting on their asses won't get it done.

P.S. Remember too that Geoff was in Vegas to watch summer league, including the game where Nate and Balkman pummeled us in spectacular fashion. I was impressed too and even made some remark as maybe getting Balkman back for Ron wouldn't be so bad either. Seems odd that an NBA GM would be impressed on a similar lavel, but we've seen that from Geoff before -- guys who have big games against us (and cue Mikki here) often get offers from us soon thereafter.

The KG trade will effect the east and other teams will try to keep up, especially teams like NY who are in the same division as Boston. If Petrie can somehow get a first and Lee out of the deal then I'm all for it. Where there is this much smoke then something is likely happening. Whether it gets done or not is another story. KG was the biggest domino and now that he's fallen there will be an effect and I just hope that we are involved somehow.

I don't think Bucher is lying, just maybe speculating too much or running with a weak rumor. I have no more interest in what Petrie supposedly wants to get done, I only care what he in fact gets done.

I agree on Rose, it really shouldn't matter whether it expires in two years instead of one.

I like Balkman but he lacks quite a bit of upside offensively. Still a 1st and Balkman is fine for Artest, I just want him out and those are solid pieces.

Note Bucher said it would Nate, Balkman and a 1st. (or Lee obviously). I have previously warned about Nate's nuttiness, but he did look considerably improved in summer league -- I know, means nothing, but still.

I just don't see the point in adding Robinson, I'd rather get Morris or Collins but NY probably covets them more.

Ditto...Ric gets paid to stir up the pot about nothing...has he EVER been right about anything pertaining to the Kings...or ANYTHING NBA related for that matter??

Well I have to say that Ron to NY has sort of been a no brainer for sometime now and with the Rise of Boston the Knicks pretty well either have to write off the season or build up to compeete this season and that will mean risk and sacrafice. Ron is probably the greatest risk with the greatest potential payoff. Under paid, high performing and a home boy... HUGE upside. We all know the down side but if I am Zeke I get the deal done even if I have to cough up a young potential stud like Balkman. Of course if I am Petrie I hold out for more but ya never know, jsut clearing the decks, bringing in expiring paper and be done with Ron might be enough.

I'm probably putting too much stock in Petrie for this, but here's hoping that he's been holding out all along for a KG deal to put the pressure on some of those eastern teams, while saying nice things about Ron in the media to get more leverage.

One can only hope.

My favorite Bucher moment came when he GUARANTEED that Chris Webber would never play ONE game as a Sacramento King.......

The KG trade makes GP look like a genius now. :D

Glad we didn't trade Bibby and Ron at a discount.
Hardly has made him a genius yet...What he actually does will validate or invalidate his genius. Mikki Moore is hardly a move of a genius.

I'm reversing my earlier opinion I realize, at the risk of my credibility, but I'm all for this if that's the deal. I've been saying that Minnesota was right to trade Garnett because the writing was on the wall, trade him now or likely lose him for nothing in the near future. Well, I think the same is pretty much true of Artest at this point. If I thought he'd stick around I'd still suggest building around him, but I think there's a more than 50% chance he bolts for New York anyway when his contract is up. He'll talk about how much he loves Sacramento right up until the day he signs with New York. It's pretty obvious that's where he wants to be. If we can get a couple promising young prospects and salary relief, it's a smart move to make. Robinson and Lee or Robinson and Balkman seems like a pretty fair return. Especially if a first round pick is involved too.

New York is already making moves to be competitive. It makes sense for them to go all in. As for us, we're better off liquidating everything and accumulating prospects until a new franchise player emerges and some sensible sense of direction. And as Bricklayer already pointed out, there's no reason not to take back a two year contract at this point. With the Mikki Moore signing we're pretty much committed to playing out people's huge contracts for the next three years anyway before the cap room will open up. This deal makes a lot of sense for us right now.

only if he acts and exploits the escalation-esque desires of competitive eastern conference teams to keep up with boston's beefing-up. if he can trade ron artest to new york and get david lee or renaldo balkman and maybe mardy collins in return, in addition to an expiring contract or two, then that's something. that's actually a pretty good start. none of those guys are going to turn the kings into any sort of contender at any point in the near future, but they are valuable pieces to a squad desiring to acquire young players that serve a clear and useful purpose. the new-look kings, if they ever come into focus, should be assembled piece-by-piece, and when that one clear-cut star and unifying player comes along (through the draft or a la chris webber), you continue to fill in the gaps. you're trying to assemble something functional. the kings could be called dysfunctional at the moment. "rebuilding on the fly" has looked a lot more like "plugging holes in a shinking ship," and when you think you've filled one gap, the ship springs a leak somewhere else, continuously perpetuating itself until the whole damn thing collapses beneath the weight of it's own shoddy repair.

and all this is just to say that the kg trade does indeed make dealing with the east a lot easier, so geoff should balk on his "we're not actively shopping any player on the roster" stance and attempt to move some of our assets to teams that are now more likely to deal.

We've got 3 years until we see what Petrie has up his sleeve. Thats when we get cap room...sort of...when Bibby, Ron, Shareef, and now Mikki, come off the books. But we also have to determine what we're doing with Cisco, Kevin, Quincy, Hawes, etc...in that same timeframe.

but the terms I'd heard didn't work under the cap.

Uhhh, yah, than he probally jsut pulled something off a message board and took it for fact because someone said they know someone that is close to etrie or something. LOL Stupid rumor.

Imagine that...a national hack sportswriter pulling a rumor off a message board from a 'reliable' source.:D

hahaaa...thing is, petrie might not even have that much time to show us what he has "up his sleeve." the maloofs aren't exactly patient folks. i have an incredibly hard time believing that geoff somehow has managed to convince a couple of millionaire playboys that they have to sit, do nothing, and sweat it out for three more years until the kings get a little bit of wiggle-room under the cap, all the while waiting to see if they can get a new arena built in sacramento with a product that kings fans aren't buying anymore. even geoff can't possibly have any idea what the market is going to look like in 3 years. circumstances change. if major cap relief were coming next year, or even the year after, then i'd say "fine. let's deal with it." but the rest of the league is reloading their shotguns with young talent. even the worst teams are more fun to watch than the kings, and most of those teams have a vision for the future. maybe it doesn't pan out, but at least they have a vision. the kings have few young talents to fall back on, and they appear to have no vision for the future, either. really, they appear destined for mediocrity for at least the next 3-5 years. mediocrity doesn't yield high draft picks, either.

Could you please fill me in on Nate's nuttiness? I missed those posts. I definitely like his talent and his competitiveness, but if we would be exchanging a nut for a nut, then I don't know about that. Are you talking Artest nuttiness or a Pollard nuttiness?:)

So the fact that he has built a lotto team and there is no hope in sight for 3 years does not in it's self reveal what is up GP's sleeve? Or better yet that the Emperor GP has no cloths much less a sleeve to have anything hidden in?

get 'er done GP. this is your chance to look like a genius. you've waited patiently for this time to come, and now its here!

the Celtics have a new Big Three. Zeke has to be sweating a little. Acquiring Artest give him his own "Bad Boy Big Three," that could be very scary.
