Wow. That's just terrible for Yao, terrible for Rockets and I just can't help but feel for Rick. If there is one ex-King that I always root for that'd be Rick.

Damn. Too bad for Houston, Yao and Adelman. No wonder they were trying very hard to trade up and get Rubio. They did get Jermaine Taylor, Chase Budinger and Sergio Llull over the past few days.

Rockets center Yao Ming’s left foot injury could be severe enough to be season ending or even career-threatening depending on the success of potential treatments chosen, Rockets team physician Tom Clanton said Monday.

"At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening," Clanton said. "One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery."

Clanton expected the hairline fracture that ended Yao’s season, his fourth bone injury in the past four seasons, to have healed when Yao returned from China for a CT scan last week.

Instead, it not only healed, but Clanton said it grew worse. He said doctors will also try to determine whether Yao has suffered a loss of blood supply in the area, causing the injury to heal more slowly.

"The hairline fracture that is present in the previous X-rays shows evidence it has not healed and has extended across the bone," Clanton said.

I'm so sorry for Yao. He seems like a very nice person and this has got to be a big blow to him. I feel for Rick, too. Maybe Rocket fans didn't feel bad for us about Webber, but that doesn't mean I can't feel bad for them. We know how much this kind of thing can hurt.

Well, the silver-lining in this (if there is one) is that Houston played very well last year when T-Mac was injured (I think Yao missed a good chunk of that 22 game winning streak as well) and they played well against the Lakers without T-Mac and Yao. Those two guys are going to be injured every year if they ever play again. They're better off moving on and building a team without them. Yao only has two more years on his contract so it's not a franchise killing blow. Actually, if there's one guy in the league who turns down a 17 million dollar player option that no one would blame him for taking, Yao is that guy.

But it's really sad news for Yao. One of the nicest guys in the NBA, and it's impossible not to feel for him. Every year he's played through pain. That was a great moment when he came back into the game and played on a broken foot against the Lakers. Wow. He gave everything he had for Houston and China every year. I really hope he plays again.

has its superstar center injured for an entire season? It ended up drafting Tim Duncan and won four NBA championships in 10 years. Same thing might happen to the Rockets if they draft John Wall next year.

Yep, same here. That franchise just can't buy a break. I really hope Yao can recover. I feel awful for him.

Man, Rick must have done something very, very bad to pee off the NBA injury gods.

Not really sure what the Rockets do from here. Yes, they played well without T-Mac, but once Yao went down against the Lakers they really were toast. Both expire after next season, but it's not like they have a ton of young talent to build around. And I doubt anyone would give up much of value if they do decide to trade T-Mac. Tough situation, but their FO is supposed to be exceptionally bright, so we'll see what they can pull off.

This really sucks if its true. Yao is a great player and seems to be very humble and respectful. He could have been one of the greatest of all time if he was healthy throughout his career. He is also living history. Good luck to Yao, it would be amazing if he came back. I'm sure he will succeed whatever comes in life, but the NBA just lost a great one.

That was an amazing series. With all their issues I never thought the Rockets had a chance but it was still great to watch. What is it the draws me to watching underdogs bringing a fight to the Lakers?

If Yao doesn't make a significantly faster than expected recovery (which is what I'm hoping for), I kind of hope they do do good in the lottery. Preferably under the Kings though.

Yao opts for surgery, likely to miss season

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has elected to have extensive surgery on his fractured left foot that almost certainly eliminates his chances of playing next season but offers hope that he can resume his NBA career and not fracture the foot a career-ending third time.

After consultation with a battery of doctors, Yao, 28, has decided to undergo a bone graft to heal the existing fracture and have his arch surgically lowered to reduce the stress on his foot.

"I am confident that the path I have chosen is the best one," Yao said. "I know I have a lot of work ahead of me before I can be back on the court, and I am committed to do whatever I can to make my recovery 100 percent successful. I have full confidence I'll play again."

The surgery will be performed next week by Dr. Tom Clanton, one of the Rockets' team physicians. If all goes well, Yao said he could begin rehabilitation "a couple weeks" after surgery and could return to basketball activity in six months.
