Rock Band Draft - Round 6 (Wrap Up)

Sleater-Kinney for one.

That would be my favorite example by far.

Also, the Cramps. ***** Galore/Jon Spencer and maybe some of their other permutations. A lot of them would probably fall into the Noise or NYC Avante Garde category, but I think there are others that play more convential music that I'm just not thinking of.

There have been quite a few groups in indie rock that have gone with two or three guitarists and no bass. Generally, one of the guitars tune down towards the lower end though.

I didn't know that some bands actually did that, but I was gonna say in the write up that, in the case where all 3 of my guitarists are playing at the same time, that one of them tune down

Two ways to go here, I'm not quite sure if either is right! If it hasn't become clear yet, my band is an attempt to create the ultimate experimental/progressive rock band.

Frank Zappa - Lead Guitar #2 / Back-up Vocals

Zappa is a god when it comes to experimental rock and he will add jazzy undertones to my band with his underrated guitar playing. His trademark vocal style will add another depth to my band as well. If I have done anything right in this draft its assemble vocals talents that, while they are all very different in style, will compliment one another very well. Its too bad I'll never really be able to prove that.

Either way, that's my band. I might take the liberty to try to make a poster myself.

Oh, and here's something at least me and dukeswh will enjoy.

Skip to right before 3:00 for a real shredfest by Zappa

Pete Townshend - Lead Guitar #3/Rhythm #2 + Synthesizer (From The Who)

I will not put synthesizer on the board. It is the last round and we need to stick to the plan. As has been alluded to, in the write up you can say so and so that is assigned such and such will be playing a bit of this on this type of song. There will not be free reign and multiple assignments must be conservative. Any over the top multiple assignments such as "all string instruments" or "anything and everything else" will not be accepted. It needs to play out like a realistic concert, you know with the laws of science in effect and all.

How come no one has stepped up to commish Rock Band Draft 2?

Then why can pdx have Thunders assigned 3 things? If synthesizer can't be put up on the board, how about back-up vocals?

Edit: If backup vocals is allowed, then I'd like to drop vocals from Hendrix

Read the first page of this draft. It is pretty clear how his three assignments are acceptable and your three are not. It was also made clear that rhythm and lead guitar do not count as two different assignments. If not, that has been consistently how it has been done. I promise that I am not picking on you.

Back-up vocals are fine. But you do not need to take them away from Hendrix unless you want. I left them for now, let me know.

Can I change Freddy Mercury to ...

Lead Vocals and Piano/Keyboard?

An oversight by me not to put it down on paper, as I kind of lumped the two together, but it adds and expands what my guys can do.

My next pick kind of depends on the answer.

Done.

I hope people will tolerate a longwinded intro to this pick since I am not wasting much of the clock to ponder it! Just want to present it in context so you can see why it is the PERFECT guy to complete my band.

As soon as I picked Keith we started thinking of who we wanted to pair him with. In my whole 45 year life - my favorite music, the tastiest guitar duo work hands down with no close second in my mind - is Keith Richards and Mick Taylor together from "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile On Main Street". Makes the hair stand up on my neck to this day. I knew I wanted that STYLE of player to put with Keith... only - of course - MORE!

Keith gave me the early seventies Stones music - least I can give him back is the PERFECT mate to jam with. You want to know the essence of my band - the sound and vibe I am going for - listen to Can't You Hear Me Knocking from Sticky Fingers. That groove...that magic. Who could give it to me???? Not Mick Taylor - I do not want to recreate a band that has already been. No... I wanted More. Better.

Now the greatest rock song in history is not a Stones song. It is Layla. And it is so because of the amazing piano coda, the amazing main riff and the amazing other-worldly improvisation at the end. Eric is allowed to play the song in concert to this day but he cannot play it right without a pianist (who can afford to bring one around to shows for one song?) and my guitar player (he's dead). But the Derek and the Dominos album might never have been pressed had this guy not chanced upon the scene and raised the bar several notches. Those guys were treading water in that studio until...

Now the cool thing is, this cat I'm telling you about is cosmically linked to my band because the reason he was there to save Derek and the Dominos in the first place is because Eric Clapton heard the solo at the end of Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude" cover, and had to find out who that was who played THAT... so you see this is all very fated that he is united not only with Keith - but with Paul as well in my band. He can play Hey Jude with the man himself now!

Did a little gig with his brother for a while too that many call the greatest American rock band ever.

Damn these guys are going to burn the muther down!!!!

Duane Allman - Slide/Rhythm/third lead guitar (Allman Brothers Band, Derek and the Dominos)

Good Lord I feel like I'm dyin'.....

Thank you for killing 1/3 of my ny next trio of picks.

Now it's down to two, and I think I know who Im going with...Even though I really shouldn't...

And Im already ready.

Buckethead
Other guitarist
solo/Praxis/Guns N' Roses/others

Okay...I wanted to pick another guitarist to mesh Synyster Gates possibly bring his intensity down a bit, and most importantly someone who could play off of him, and vice-versa...Well, and in my search I discovered Buckethead.

The man wears a mask and a KFC bucket on his head while performing. When he plays he pretends he was "raised by chickens, and has made it his mission in life to alert the world to the ongoing chicken holocaust in fast-food joints around the globe".

Beneath the look I have discovered that he can do absolutely everything I would want him to do in my band! Ballads. Rock. Metal. Jazz Fusion. Funk.

Nice ballady rock music that expands before falling that would just mesh greatly.
And the dynamic of Mercury prancing around the stage and this guy just being there makes me happy.
Image is everything.

And last but not least...Guitarist #1B...

Oh, and I don't really have a lead guitarist, per-say. They are both equally important, and their roles will be expanded upon when we do the naming/describing of our bands.

And now... my crazy pick... must commit to see this through...
Klaus Nomi - Vocals/Evil Band Conductor/Pastry Chef
Klaus_Nomi.jpg

I've mentioned that I was going to do something crazy vocally, and this is it. Klaus will have free reign to sing wherever he chooses to acompany the backup vocalists who will be singing more traditional vocal parts. He will also serve as kind of an evil conductor for this band from hell and their demonic stage show which promises to slay everyone.

Just who the hell is this guy?

Klaus Nomi was a German countertenor noted for remarkable vocal performances and an unusual, otherworldly, elfin stage persona. Nomi is remembered for bizarrely theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes, and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classic opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and Lou Christie's "Lightnin' Strikes".

No pastries aren't part of the show. But I saw it in his wiki and thought it was funny.

Spike, please pick a bass player. I can think of one the best still on the block that would work nicely.

3 guys still need drummers, unless they plan on having their keyboard player run the drum track. Wondering where they are going and imagining that some may have the same in mind as a lot of great drummers have been taken.

I nominate the next person to question the rules to commission Rock Band Draft #2.

And with this intro, I make my final pick in the draft. This pick was a tough decision to make, because I could have gone with someone a little more technical/fundamentally sound...and funkier, but not really well known. I could have also gone with a female here, who would have fallen under the one-hit wonder crowd, for the most part.

In any case, I'm glad this guy was still left. I have a band member who is, at times, androgynous. Now, I have someone who many think sounds like a girl. My last pick in this draft:

Geddy Lee (Rush) Bass Guitar

An award-winning musician, Lee's style, technique, and skill on the bass guitar have proven very influential in the rock and heavy metal genres, inspiring such players as Steve Harris of Iron Maiden,John Myung of Dream Theater,Les Claypool of Primus, and Cliff Burton of Metallica.

I didn't see that coming. There is an awesome documentary about Nomi that comes up every now and then on one of the cable movie channels (IFC or Sundance if I had to guess) and I saw it for the N-th time not too long ago, but it never entered my mind that someone would pick him. You're right, depending on how you "use" him in your band you may win or lose many votes. On the plus side, I'll believe almost anything you ask of him in your band. Not so with other vocalists. You can't have Lennon in a death metal band if you want to be taken seriously, but put Nomi in anything from HC to sugar pop to rap and I'll belive it.

And finally, we're down to the last pick in this draft. For this pick, I didn't know which way to go, should I pick another guitarist or should I pick a keyboardist? I know the sound that I'm aiming for, but don't know which would compliment it better. The thing that pushed me in making this pick is that I want someone who can keep up with the others on stage and I don't think a keyboardist will be able to and anyway, the best ones I know have already been taken(Trent Reznor being the most likely candidate). So for my final pick, I select someone who can hold his own against Claypool and Vai, and someone who is versatile enough to be able to blend himself in a band, any band(actually he's in a band right now, but doing solos as a side project), I pick:

John_Petrucci_02.jpg

John Petrucci - 2nd Lead Guitar

He has actually played with my lead guitarist and Satch when he was invited to tour with them for G3. Love this guy, a great musician and the man behind Dream Theater.

Here he is doing a cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb:

And the circle is completed. As soon as Carlos was in my band, I was commited to having a conga player. Being a Conga player myself (pronounced koonga), I know a bit about the subject. There actually is one guy who is clearly the best. He has played with Paul Simon and Mickey Hart's Planet Drum as well as the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Jazz Orchestra among many others. But watch the vids and let his hands speak for themselves. I have seen him live several times and it is absolutey mind blowing.
