Rock Band Draft - Round 6 (Wrap Up)

Was wondering when he was going to go. Was all set to scuttle my own third poick if people mysteriously continues to ignore him. Maybe for the best however -- lets me stick wiht my sneaky drummer pick instead.

P.S. However...wall of sound? With Paul McCartney?

Bonham was my drummer after Peart. I was hoping he'd slide as well. I will have to re-tool my picks, however.

I've seen McCartney's solo band twice in Arco recently. It is why I picked him. Helter Skelter, Jet, etc... he ROCKED the house big big time.

Ok, now hear me out. Gates is set to add a little edge to my band for sure being the heaviest rocker of my band, but his style is pretty unique...The sounds he makes his guitar make can fit in with the slowdown Water's parts and the other stuff Mercury can do.
He is in no way expected to be a metal riffer in this band. He is expected to add some edge with his distinctive abiet somewhat harder sounds. Not to drown out Mercury/Waters but to enhance!

With bass and drums set time for me to grab my lead guitarist:
Robert Quine - Lead Guitar (Associated acts: Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Matthew Sweet, and many others)

Though he first rose to fame with Richard Hell and the Voidoids and helped define early punk guitar, Robert Quine is by no means your "typical punk rock guitarist". His style embraced influences from rock and blues to jazz and his technique led to collaborations with too many visionary artists to list in one brief write up. A full list of credits can be found here.
I'm going to assume that most of you aren't familiar with Quine so I'll provide a few choice cuts so you can hear exactly why he is my pick:

Here is Quine with Richard Hell on "Blank Generation" - you'll notice right away that the lead guitar is much more prominent than on your typical punk recording, and it isn't reserved just for the solo section, its a predominant feature of the entire track.

Perhaps the biggest hit featuring Quine's playing was Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend". On its surface a pretty bubble gum pop tune, but Quine's playing really takes over in the second verse. It is this ability to mingle the lead with the vocals and not just in solo sections that will make Quine a key component of this new band.

One last example is "Love Comes in Spurts" - a tune Richard Hell originally recorded during his brief stint with the Heartbreakers that was re-recorded with the Voidoids on Blank Generation and is probably their best known tune outside of the title cut.

Compare to the early Heartbreakers version and you can really see how much texture Quine's playing adds to the song.

Mike Portnoy is the drummer for Dream Theater, a prog metal band. What I didn't know is that he co-produced and wrote lyrics for the last five Dream Theater albums.
He is the second youngest drummer to be inducted into the Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame.

I'm so happy I did not lose this pick, I was getting a little anxious there for a while when Joe Satriani was picked, I thought that this guy was next. For my next pick, I choose:

Steve Vai - Lead Guitar/Backup Vocals - (Whitesnake, Frank Zappa, Vai, Solo)

Well, what can I say, this guy has everything - Speed, Technique, Emotion, Showmanship, Versatility - what more can the Ozzman ask for from his Axeman? If you look at Ozzy's lead guitarists, they are all legends, and this guy was supposed to be one of them, but it didn't happen(although they worked together on one of his albums). If there is one man that can keep up with Ozzy and Claypool on stage, it would be this man.
He also happens to be a former student of Joe Satriani, but I would always take Vai over Satch any day. IMO, he's better than Joe now, skillwise they are pretty equal, but when it comes to live performances, that's where he excels.

SWEET!!! If I was going to have a shredder, it would be the Devil's shredder from Crossroads! He has charisma all over Satriani. And to me, a shredder is a shredder - I never say "omg" about how fast a guy plays because I see kids do it at Guitar Center any day. But Vai is a rock star!

I have "Surfing with the Alien" and I break it out every time I get a new speaker, CD player, amp etc... one of my favorite reference recordings and "Always With Me, Always With You" is a timeless classic number that belongs in a space capsule. ok? I wouldn't worry about it - it's all good natured fun. All of us are pumping up our band for positioning. Vai is a great choice. I feel this is probably the most exciting draft of TDOS.

It has been noted. Satch is a great guitarist, and I was a fan of him first before becoming a fan of Vai, and as I said in my post, I think both of them are pretty equal, but when it comes to onstage presence, I'll take Vai any day of the week.

Apart from his career in the jazz fusion band Weather Report, Jaco had two Grammy Award nominations for his self-titled debut album.
