Rizzoli and Isles: The New Angie Harmon Cop show...

#1
I clicked on Rizzoli and Isles off my DVR to see how the first episode would grab me and after the first fews minutes, it occured to me that this show is so unoriginal and cliche' that every part of the show could have been cut and pasted from other cop shows:

Here is what I got before I turned it off (in favor of a TLC reality show, which I really don't like, but they are better than this):

Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) is a tough, streetwise Italian-American cop; in the opening sequence, she breaks her nose and is not too upset about it. Her mom makes some comments about when will she meet a nice guy, etc..

She goes to a crime scene where she meets up with Isles who is a pathologist. She is also joined by her partner who is not tough at all, a hunky FBI agent, and a weathered and overbearing police captain.

The crime scene is of an ultra-violent rape/murder scene we have come to expect on cop shows and gives Rizzoli flash backs to when she was abducted and nearly murdered by a murder with the same M.O. but is now in jail.

She goes to meet the original killer, who is now in jail, whom almost killed her in her flashback, to question him. How do you think he behaved? He said inflamatory things to her and they kind of had a weird connection to one another. Rizzoli's partner nearly punched the guy as he said inflamatory things to Rizzoli. And he only gave Clarice, I mean Rizzoli, information after she admitted she dreamed about him.

This is the point I turned it off and I have a couple questions:

1. Who should I feel worse for? Me for having watched some of this terrible show or Angie Harmon who is playing the same role again; does she not remember?

2. Who green-lighted this pile of garbage? I think the studio cost-effectiveness calculator needs to attach less value to "CSI Rehash" when picking new shows.

3. I just finished watching Dinosapien for the 4000th time with my kids and, though it is a BBC International/Discovery Kids production, was much better than this show. Heck, Oobi is a more well written show than this.

Anybody else watch this show? Am I missing something?

To make matters worse:

'Rizzoli & Isles' posts best ever debut for an ad-supported cable show
by Lynette Rice

More than 7 million viewers tuned into the debut of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles Monday – the most-watched premiere ever for an ad-supported cable show, the network announced. The drama that stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander bowed after the sixth season premiere of The Closer, which averaged 7.7 million viewers (up 7% over last year). Rizzoli & Isles – which is based on the crime novels by author Tess Garritsen – lured 7.55 million viewers. It also built on its lead-in from The Closer among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

Harmon plays detective Jane Rizzoli and Alexander plays medical examiner Maura Isles – two friends who solve crimes together in Boston. The show also stars Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos).

Its pretty hard to come up with anything really new in a crime/legal show. They've been making them since practically the beginning of TV. Some good, some bad. Success usually has more to do with writing, character development and chemistry of the cast, than on some completely original idea.

I didn't think it was as terrible as you did. Since there's nothing much on in the summer and definitely nothing else on that I would've watched I gave it a try, since I like the crime/legal genre. I also won't judge it off of one show. Some of the best shows ever got off to rocky starts.

Same thing happens to me when I read crime/legal thrillers. The plots can get pretty familiar, but its all in how its handled by the writer.

Will it be "must watch" for me? Won't decide yet. If it was up against the Closer, Cold Case or CSI (Las Vegas) among some others ...not a chance. I loved Amazing Grace, but they ended the show (on purpose). Guess its better to go out on a high, but I would've liked a few more seasons of that.

My only impressions from the promos were that it looked unoriginal and has one of the least catchy titles ever. Really rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Can we work in ten more vowels somehow? :p It's too bad this gets so many more viewers than Leverage, which is fairly unique for U.S. TV even if it's kind of a dumbed downed version of BBC's Hustle.

Actually, I watch leverage, although its not "must see" for me, either. But it's not terribly original either. Just another show where a "team" of characters does things together. Except these are former "bad" folks rescueing innocent individuals. Also not an original theme. Actually, if I'm going to go the rescuing innocent people from bad guys, I like "Burn Notice" better. Campy and fun, plus beautiful scenery shots.

Oh, by the way, I've been watching "Through the Wormhole" on the Science channel, narrated by Morgan Feeman. Fabulous show. Absolutley absorbing and mind-boggling at times. Love it.

Burn Notice is must see for me... it's like the A-Team and Miami Vice mixed together.

I watched some of this and I always begin to lose track of what is happening wondering this: "Is Morgan Freeman really this into science or is this just another acting job? What if he is into science this much? If that is the case, I need to rewatch all of his movies for scientific tendancies!"

I never got Angie Harmon, she had to be the worst ADA ever on L&O, not counting some of the minor characters in the spinoffs. I will grant her the very slight possibility that her character was written to be annoying and horrible and she acted it to perfection, but I'm going with my gut that she is just a bad actress that happens to be attractive enough to maintain an audience.

It appears she is also typecast at this point in her career.
