Report: Taylor open to trading Garnett
Bloomberg News quotes nothing new for Wolves' owner

Bloomberg News reported Friday that Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is open to trading Kevin Garnett, a statement that at first glance raises eyebrows.
But the quotes from Taylor don't reveal anything the owner hasn't said in the past.

Taylor told Bloomberg: "I certainly don't think you never say never. I wouldn't close the door to it."

That's consistent with Taylor's stance in the past.

During the preseason in October, Taylor told the Pioneer Press regarding the idea of rebuilding the team without Garnett: "I wouldn't want to say to you it wouldn't happen. ... I'm saying I don't see that because I want to win. But if you say to me, is there a circumstance? Yeah, if we just decide to go all young. ... I'm not interested in doing that (going young), but that's still something you have to think about if things don't work out."

There's another reason to believe there's no smoke behind Taylor's comment. Wolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said Thursday the organization doesn't plan to trade Garnett.

Taylor can be one of the most outspoken owners in the NBA. In certain contexts, his words can appear to carry more weight if not balanced with the appropriate perspective.
Taylor was in New York attending NBA meetings and did not return a message left at his office. Garnett's agent, Andy Miller, also did not return a message.

Was this the last season for Kevin Garnett in Minnesota?
BY RICK ALONZO, Pioneer Press
Article Last Updated: 04/18/2007 07:51:02 AM CDT

The season ends tonight for the Timberwolves, who need to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies to match their 33-49 record from last season. Time will tell whether this offseason brings a flood of change or just a few tweaks. Here's a look at some issues facing the team:

1. Was this the last season for Kevin Garnett in Minnesota?
The Wolves will have to answer that question in earnest this offseason. Garnett has two years remaining on his contract for more than $40 million. Because he can opt out of his deal and leave the final year on the table, the Wolves run the risk of losing him for nothing if they don't trade him this summer or before next season's trade deadline in February.
His trade value might never be higher because he's getting older -- he turns 31 on May 19 -- and his physical abilities have hit a plateau, although his experience has made him wiser.

(For those who thought the Kings had it bad in terms of salary cap and bad contracts, check out the following from the same article.)

Trades won't be easy because so many players on the roster have underperformed and have contracts that might not be easy to move. Mike James(top)didn't live up to expectations after signing a four-year, $23.5 million contract last summer. Marko Jaric (middle) has four more years remaining on his original $38 million deal. Troy Hudson (bottom) played in only 34 games this season, so his trade value probably isn't high.

trade every and anybody but Kevin for KG? :D

It would take Kevin, and I would trade Kevin, to get KG. That's a win now approach, maybe the only realistic win now approach. Not much point in ending up wiht just a Kevin/KG pairing and scubs. That's a mismatched pair agewise that is nowhere near enough to make major noise by itself. Mike w/ KG as Webb II, or Ron w/KG to create potentially one of the best/most intense defensive multipurpose forward tandems in history, are the two better matches where maybe you get more out of the player yoou already have for having added the one you don't (KG). If we still had Rick, I would even include Brad because you could be recreating the Webb/Vlade dynamic (as is, Brad too is the defenseless trade bait necessary). In any case though, Kevin is a natural fit as the holdover guy in a rebuild. But in a veteran heavy bring in the superstar and let's try to win the title today scenario, he's just an expendable asset that would almost surely be necessary to make it happen.

I think you hit it on the nail there re: KG. On their own Brad and Mike are nothing to write home about, with KG in the mix, all of sudden they are great complimentary players as they were when Webb was here. Brad might even find a second wind to his whole career like Vlade did.

MN can get better offers for KG.

MN can get better offers for KG.

Not too much better than Kevin, our #1, and matching salaries (Brad + Reef/KT most likely) I would think. That fits their young star, lottery pick requirements. And actually, just with those two pieces you automatically are making a better offer than about half the team's in the league can make in their best case scenario.

Problem for Minny is that, stupid as always, they have waited this thing out to the point where teams, including us, have to be acutely aware of KGs age, and of the fact that you aren't going to have the time to plug him in as a major piece and then patiently build around him. Pretty much you have to still be left with enough pieces on your roster to contend here and now. And that's going to restrict team's willingness to gut themselves in a way it might not have a couple of years back.

Would I be excited if KG landed here....sure. It would be exciting to see what happened with him here.

Having said that, I would really hold back my optimism about what KG would mean for the Kings future if he landed here. This is especially true if we threw in every thing and the kitchen sink to get him. I don't think that he is really worth everything and the kitchen sink.

Is he a tremendous talent?.....yep. Does it seem that he is one of the very top players in the league?.....yep. Doesn't it seem that he should have been on more winning teams so far in his career?....absolutely.

I am not convinced that if the Wolves cannot make it work with this guy that another team would be much more successful.....maybe, but I am not as convinced as others. There have been times where I thought the talent around him was decent. If we throw in everything and the kitchen sink to get him (and this is what the 'wolves will want), I do not think that there will be much left with which to build a team.
