Report: Sacramento has landed an NWSL expansion franchise. The deal is being finalized Sacramento seems to have added a top-level women’s soccer team. A story by The Athletic reported Wednesday morning there is a done deal between Sacramento investors and a new team will join the NWSL in 2021.

In a conference call with reporters Tuesday morning, NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird confirmed that Sacramento will have a team in the league starting in the 2022 season. It will be the first Northern California team for the league. The Sacramento club will join Angels City FC, which will play in Los Angeles, to bring the league up to 12 teams next year.

Jill Ellis, who coached the United States Women's National Team to two World Cup titles, joined the front office of the NWSL expansion team in Sacramento, The Athletic reported. Ellis' role will not just be limited to helping Sacramento's NWSL team in advance of its 2022 debut, she also will assist in Sacramento's launch of an MLS expansion team in 2023 season.
