Radio Station Talk Hosts Accused Magic of Faking AIDS

I'm not sure they should be fired, since free speech is something we have in this country - I think. Reprimanded, yes, and told how stupid they are, yes, since one major fact was wrong besides their basic charge. Claiming Ervin Johnson "faked his AIDS" is not accurate since he has HIV - not actual AIDS.

I will never forget when Magic took to the airwaves in 1991 with his shocking statement, "I will have to retire from the NBA, because I have obtained the HIV virus." My only question has always been how did he "obtain it", since he claimed to have lots and lots of "extra-marital affairs," no drug use (injections) or blood transfusions. To me, it just seems strange that he got it from exclusive "heterosexual" relations as seems to be the story.

Anyway, his work since in helping prevention and assisting those with the terrible disease is most admirable.

Three things:

1) this thread has to be careful, because the two morons in question made their stupid little claims in the midst of a political rant, so lets not bleed it over here.

2) people are always throwing free speech out there as an excuse for anything. Free speech means if these idiots want to stand on a street corner somewhere howling about Magic's faking AIDS, they can't be stopped. It does NOT mean that they can say whatever they want ont he air, that they have the right to be employed saying such stupid stufff, nor that any intellkigent audience (and here I may be assuming something that is not necessarily true) would give them the time of day to justify their show.

3) AIDS can be transferred via heterosexual means just fine -- just ask the tens of millions with it in Africa. And if the stories about Magic's and "Big Game" James Worthy's post game carousing habits are remotely true, he would have had any number of opportunities to acquire it.

Lot of lingering misconceptions about this. The biggest one is that straight people can't get it. Second biggest is that he got it via extra marital affairs. He got married less than 2 months before the announcement itself.

Where'd he get it? Can never be 100% sure. However, he had sex with a woman he knew from Michigan in June of 1990. She found out she had HIV in June 1991. He found out he had it in Oct 1991. She was the only one who ever came out with HIV and they both showed the virus within a 4 month span. (One of them probably gave it to the other.)

She sued him in 94, claiming he knowingly gave it to her. He claimed he had no idea and that she just as likely could've given it to him. Out of court settlement.

I realize it can be passed on to straight people via heterosexual (male/female) relations. However it's WAY more of a male homosexual disease regardless of what the PC crowd may want to spin. My doctor in Sacramento has has seen tens of thousands of patients in his career and was a bit surprised a few years ago when I requested an HIV screen. He told me I would probably want to save the $50 for the blood work (which I agreed) as he had only ever received three positives from his patients out of hundreds of such tests - and all were known gay males. It has been documented in studies as far as heterosexual relations that HIV is more easily transmitted from male to female than vice versa. Also, the gal Magic married "2 months before announcement" and is still married to, "Cookie," was his GF from way back in high school.

I never heard that story about Magic's other GF with HIV, lawsuit and settlement. I think there's a LOT of stuff that has never come out about the escapades and even secret life of Ervin Johnson. Heck, maybe he was fooling around with assorted transsexuals instead of trying to top "Wilt the Stilts" record with the real ladies:eek:

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/resources/reports/2005report/table1.htm

The above table shows that the number of infections due to heterosexual sex is not far from the number through homosexual sex (14,000:16,000 in 2001, 12,000:18,000 in 2005). Also note that the ratio of men getting the disease from women versus other men has been about 3 or 4 to 1. So while obviously homosexual sex is a more likely cause in general, there is still no reason to doubt that heterosexual sex was the cause of any individual's contraction of the virus. Your doctor's three person sampling notwithstanding. ;)

This seems to be going pretty far afield from the original topic and is, in fact, heading directly into an area that simply isn't part of what our forum is about. So, for that reason, I'm closing the thread.
