Race to the Bottom thread

Also the restrictions on how many times a team can draft first and top 5 consecutively could make it really bad to win the lottery in an off year when your reward is someone like Zaccharie Risacher not the next Wemby. That becomes a 5 year problem rather than a 1 year problem. And perhaps not talked about enough is what this will do to traded draft picks.
Tank to the bottom-3 in a bad draft to avoid winning the lottery...

Depending on how many slots they draft, you'd still be guaranteed pick #5 if you had the worst record wouldn't you? So it needs to be second worst. Or are they lottery drawing all 14 picks now? Twitter/X is a terrible way to digest news because I have no idea at this point what is actually in this proposal and what is only rumored to be.

They're drawing all 16 slots now, but the three worst teams are floored at #12.

I broke it down here: https://community.kingsfans.com/threads/race-to-the-bottom-thread.103100/page-61#post-1939340

So can someone explain to me so I don't have to look it up:
This is final, at least for the next 3 years?

and B) (more importantly) - Silver decided this unilaterally on his own without a league ownership vote?

It still has to be approved by league owners (vote on May 28th) but it sounds like it's all but a done deal. There might still be some tweaks before it's all over for all we know.

It sounds like the board of governors, competition committee, and all 30 GMs were in on creating this, but I have no idea how much input they did or did not have.

Except, we do know who is actually bad? Like, here's Utah benching their all-stars in the fourth!

I've already beaten this dead horse, but there are two problems. (1) Tanking is a problem. (2) Competitive imbalance in the league is a problem.

A solution like a straight reverse-order draft does a good job of addressing the second problem while exacerbating the first. Typical lottery systems partially address both, but only partially. The new system more or less fully addresses the first problem while exacerbating the second.

We should address both problems simultaneously, and I believe in principle we can. But current NBA leadership isn't astute enough to recognize this and get out of the lottery framework entirely.
Yep it’s going to make the worst teams worse with teams trying to win at the bottom so your worst teams will suck forever and teams opting to lose in the playin to get the chance at a generational player.

It hard to describe how absolutely stupid Silver is.

The funny thing is they probably just tanked the value of their expansion plans by a couple Billion because I don’t know how an expansion team stays out of the bottom 3.

My head hurts. Unless there is an equal weighted lottery for everyone in the league, any of this will continue to incentivize some level of benefit for a "tank". Percentages are percentages. I would have kept things relatively simple, but with an additional element that penalizes clear tanking situations.

1. Flatten odds a little bit more
2. Give some odds to play-in teams (7 to 10 seeds). I wouldn't worry about teams tanking the play-in games... there is still a pretty big financial benefit for teams to be in the actual playoffs (and potential for pretty serious fan backlash.) I think that generally keeps owners in check with tanking at that level.
3. Increase the "lottery" slots from 4 to maybe 5 or 6.
4. No top 3 pick more than 2 out of 3 years. "winning" the lottery in year 3 after top 3 the prior two years puts them into the 4th slot.
5. Institute a committee to investigate tanking allegations and establish a multi-layered disciplinary system. Minor infractions generate owner fines. Clear evidence of tanking agreed by the committee moves the team into lower draft spots, with egregious infractions moving a team to the end of the first round.

Bleh. Although, why wasn't this around when the Kings were purgatory bad? lol.

Our owner is still Vivek. We're gonna be purgatory bad before we're good.

Honestly these new odds might help us out with how delulu our owner is.

We were tanked by injuries this season, not any kind of forethought or plan.

It's gonna be back to wash up vets and 30-38 wins per season soon enough!

To be clear... I was reacting to the actual proposal (vomit inducing) not your summary of it, which was very much appreciated! I figure you would have deduced that, but just in case.

Yeah, no worries, it was clear! I figure I gotta say something at least somewhat egregious to get vomit sign from a fellow mod and summarizing the lottery proposal definitely doesn't rise to that level!

Kings usually hover around the 7-10 range so this may not be the worst proposition. let's see how this plays out because what's going on with Ainge and Indy's front office is a no go

Are we pretending the Kings 1 PO in 20 years and because of the lottery system? I f you take kings an an outlier, I can see why most GMs and league agree to such pattern. It will change the whole landscape. Now are there any system to save the Kings? I doubt that as long as Vivek is in charge
