Race to the Bottom thread

Don’t know who is the tank commander of the team but it could be Lavine, Christie, Perry, Schroeder, Westbrook or Derozan

If we can somehow get Wilson, I would be pretty happy with this tanking season lol. Murray, Wilson, Raynaud, and Clifford would make for a fun and exciting future.

But, unless we are getting one or two, I doubt we have a chance at Wilson

Unless something unexpected happens he is likely going 4th.
It's probably a bit early to be confident about this yet. Caleb has looked very good, and while everybody seems very high on Peterson, there are at least minor warts on Boozer and Dybantsa and Brown and Ament...and who knows what folks think of Peat by the end of the year...etc., etc.

I'd peg his range between about 1-8 right now and let it settle into a smaller range over the year.

Shoot, by the time we draft maybe we like somebody even more than Wilson!

The thing about the Thunder is they have reached a point of not needing or even being able to play more first rounders. Even if their previous two first round picks didn’t have medical issues they wouldn’t see the court outside of garbage time. They probably are going to start doing what they did with the Nique pick and sell them into the future. This is especially true if the owners are willing to pay the tax and keep the team together

Why would you pay the tax on anyone besides the big three if they can be replaced by rookie deals. Would make no sense and I doubt would be done even if they didn’t have the picks to replace them. IHart will be paid by another team and his replacement will come this draft just have to hope it’s not Boozer or Wilson

To give yourself the best chance to be considered one of the best teams ever. Maybe those ancillary pieces matter more than we think given the teams record without Chet or JDub.

They already drafted iHart’s replacement last year (probably) but I can’t imagine they want to let Dort walk given he is a true difference maker. They lucked out on JDub not getting the big max.

I also serious doubt they end up with 2 top ten picks. Utah is either going to fall off or buy and take a run at a top 10 seed and the Clips will probably turn it around at some point.

That clippers pick will be top 10 minimum there’s no sign of them turning it around and harden will miss games

Dort probably gets resigned he won’t command a big contract

No they will dump higher salary guys and backfill with cheap rookies to stay out of the 2nd apron.

26-13-4 on 60% TS while probably being the best defensive player in basketball (no lower than top 5) at age 21?

The skill/talent/production will be there, if he stays healthy. Got to win at least 4 rings, imo, to be in contention for GOAT status, but I think its absurd we can see a world where Wemby does get there
I don’t think anyone as tall as Wemby ever ends up playing long enough to be considered, unfortunately. He’s already gotten hurt every season he’s been in the NBA and with the blood clot issue I’m just not so sure he won’t be another and better version of Yao Ming that has to retire earlier than expected. I hope he plays 20 years of course but i have big doubts.

As far as his skill and numbers - it’s all there, but i see him being one of the greatest bigs of all time, not a pure GOAT. He has a long long way to go before he can even pass up the best players in franchise history in Duncan and Robinson, let alone Jordan or LeBron.

ya we’re wont gonna be better than the Mavs or clippers just need NO to get there crap straight and Utah to win games before Angie sits the starters in February as usual

Well OKC's owner is a cheap snake so the league only has to worry about it until all the stars they have want their big paydays/to be franchise players elsewhere.

Plus, who the hell wants to live in OKC. Dust boooowl.
That is at least partially the genius of the present situation is Presti can trade picks or use them as he sees it right now. He sees a guy he can sell in a year or two he'll exercise the pick, otherwise he flips it the way he just did in the Nique deal. I sit in between Joshy and iowa here because we already know Clay Bennett is a sell early rather than sell late kinda owner (and also a total dirtbag who f'd over Seattle and is now trying to hold up OKC for a public arena deal 15 years later).

Honestly the only thing that stands in the way of OKC is Presti getting bored or if he wants to play on easy mode and go to a big market or owner with money. He's been with Bennett for almost 20 years now. Maybe they love each other. It's not totally unprecedented for GOAT level GMs to decide they need a different challenge. West moved around later in his career even though its hard not to believe the Lakers were the love of his life.

Come to the Kings Presti.... it'll be the ultimate challenge for your genius. 😉

Yup. OKC doesn't really need the picks right now, or at least all of them. If I were him, I would sort my picks into obvious high value picks (likely lottery) and lower value picks (those likely to convey non-lottery). For the absolute highest value picks, you either use them on prospects you think you want to develop long term or sell in a few years, or you just trade those picks to teams willing to give you a piece that helps you immediately.

But for the lower value picks, I would trade them for potentially better future picks. I am sure there are no shortage of teams that would trade you an unprotected 2030 pick for your top 10 protected 2026 pick. Or a top 4 protected 2031 pick in exchange for a 2027 pick that is likely mid-first round. Most teams are too short sighted to place appropriate value on draft picks more than 4-5 years out. But if you are OKC, and have more picks than you could ever possibly use, I would trade some of your picks that look like singles and doubles in the next 2-3 years, and trade them for picks that might be home runs (or singles or strike outs) in the 2030-2033 range.

Why not? If they do it right, they can keep winning now (they already obviously have the talent they need to be a juggernaut for the next 3-4 years without much tweaking), but also set themselves up to continue the run in the 2030s. It is basically a "two-timelines" approach, but instead of having disgruntled young players on their roster (like the Warriors did) they just keep trading current draft picks for potentially better draft picks in future years. I mean, there is a scenario where OKC can turn their 10 or so protected FRPs over the next 3 years into 1 or 2 good prospects, and like 4-5 unprotected or very lightly protected FRPs in the early 2030s.

Even if Presti were available:

A. I don't trust that Vivek is competent enough to even think about going after Presti.
B. Even if Vivek shocks us all, and does actually pursue Presti, I don't think Presti is stupid enough to want to deal with such a level of incompetence from his owner.
