One of my ALL-TIME Favorites ....
Dead End Street by Lou Rawls
I was born in the city that they call the windy city.
They call it the windy city because of
the hawk. The hawk! ; the almighty
hawk. Thats the wind; takes care of
plenty business, round winter time.
The place that I lived in was on a street
that happened to be one of the Dead
End Streets, where there was nothing
to block the wind, the elements; nothing
to buffer them for me, to keep em from
knockin my pad down, Jim.
I mean, really sockin it to me.
When the boiler would bust, and the heat
was gone, Jim, I had to get fully dressed
before I could go to bed.
Cause I couldnt put on my galoshes,
they had bumpers on em, and my folks
didnt play that; they said dont you
tear up my bed clothes with them galoshes on.
But I was fortunate; soon as I was big
enough to get a job and save enough
money, get a ticket, catch anything,
I split. I said one day, Im gonna return
and Ill straignten it all out.
Im about ready to go back now, so I
thought Id tell you about it
They say this is a big, rich town
But I live in the poorest part
I know Im on a Dead End Street
In a city without a heart.
I learned to fight before I was six,
The only way I could get along.
When youre raised on a Dead End
Street,
Youve gotta be tough and strong.
Now, all the guys theys gettin in
trouble, thats how its always been,
When the odds are all against you,
how can you win. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.
All of that, Yeah.
Im gonna push my way outta here,
Even though I cant say when.
But Im gonna get off of this Dead
End Street, and I aint never gonna
come back again.
No, I aint gonna come back to this
Dead End Street no more.
Cause Im gonna get me a job,
Im gonna save my dough.
Get away from here, I aint gonna
come back no more.
I'm tired of a Dead End Street,
I want to get out in the world and
learn something.
Tired of breakin my back,
I want to start using my mind.

My favorite part of the song:
I learned to fight before I was six
Only way I could get along
Cause when you raised on a DEAD END STREET
You gotta be tuff and strong ... OH YEAH !!!
I just remember this song when I was a kid .....
I'll miss ya Lou ....
