I will be on a conference in San Francisco and since I have never been western of Dallas I am not sure what to expect. If any of you can give me some tips/advice of what to do or not to do - I would be grateful.

I haven't been in 10 years, but I'm sure these two basic rules haven't changed:
Fisherman's Wharf is a joke.
Don't drive. Cab it. Parking costs and inconvenience will more than make up for the difference.

I am dying to check out the new Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Science:

If you have any interest (and if it is still there, you didn't say when you would be there), check out the King Tut exhibit:

There are all the "traditional SF" things as well: Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point, Lombard Street east of Hyde (1 block of very curvy road), Chinatown (very cool to walk through, if interested), The Stinking Rose Restaraunt (only if you like garlic), the Presidio, Golden Gate Park (and everything within that is to see there), and probably 100 things I am forgetting. :D

Are you staying in SF or venturing outside the city as well? How long are you "here"?

Agreed on the driving vs. cab thing.

Also, SF can be cold and foggy at times, even in the summer. Be prepared for SF weather.

And yes, some famous areas of SF are very "touristy" and commercialized, but that doesn't mean you can't walk through the area just to check it out anyways. :)

I am at the conference but I will take a whole day off on Monday. Booked the Alkatraz visit already.

Have the Sea Lions come back to the wharf? I heard that they mostly all left, and was wondering if they did come back?

My favorite things to do are catching shows at the Orpheum Theatre, riding the cable cars, and eating in china town.


Book a return flight out of Sacramento International (really easy airport to get in and out of), drive up I-80 east for about 80 miles, switch to I-5 north, take the Arena Blvd. exit, and you will see Arco Arena on the left :)

edit: I hope that those directions are right now.
