question about the summer league

i was wandering about omri Casspi.
In September he has the EuroBusket 2009, and the trainings with the national team starts in the next week..
so i was wandering, omri Casspi Must play at the summer league?
or if he wont come the kings manager might get angry?

thanks..

I'm sure the team prefers him to be here. Its his first yr in the NBA. Its the best for even Casspi himself to be here for all the workouts, summer league etc so he can get a good start.

If he goes back and forth he would have a tough time when the regular season starts. If the country supports him being the first Israel player they should understand and excuse him from playing for the national team this time.

Couldn't say, you can expect the Kings to tell him that they want him there and that it can really go in his favor in terms of what kind of role he plays with the team this year. Ultimately the decision is probably up to Casspi, but his decision can have a bearing on his role in the NBA this year.

the israeli ppl arnt going to be happy if he will not be here while the national training... the uerobusket is a very important comptition for the israeli pplz... we want to get to the world cup and then to the olympic games.. so its gonna make alot of probloms i guess... big Headache for the kings and casspi

Summer league actually isn't much of "league" at all -- its 5 games spread over about 2 weeks just so NBA teams can get an early feel for how their kids are developing. Not sure what the practice schedule is, but something might be able to be worked out.

I still remember JT's game winning shot last year. That really got me excited because it was kind of a preview of how he can perform in the clutch if given the opportunity. I also remember how Spencer couldn't hit a 3 pt shot to save his life.

That's a risk you take when you draft someone who is on a national team for another country. Too many people in the U.S. do not understand the feelings of fans from other countries. Our "national" team never conflicts with the NBA.

As I see things right now, he'll probably opt to stay in the States for the summer league.

He's been asked about that dozens of times during the past few days, and if I understand the subtext of his "diplomatic" answers correctly, it's something like "sorry, you know how much the national team means to me, but this is my dream, it's something I gotta do".

And I personally believe that Basketball fans here in Israel would really respect and accept whatever choice he makes.
Him getting to where he is right now already means so much to everybody here.

as you probably know, if hes gonna pick the summer league all the Anti news writers gonna start writing things against him.
and for once? im gonna be with them.
summer league isnt such an important thing at the NBA they only want to see the new players while they got the preseason at october anywayz.
if omri caspi is a smart guy he will choose the national team.. if not pplz in here gonna hate him for this.

Nobody's gonna hate him for anything.
The media might make a deal out of it, but it's nothing to worry about. They make a big deal of the stupidest things.
Israeli people? My guess is they'll support him whatever he chooses. But time will tell.

as allways no matter what is the reason all the israeli patriots gonna come out and go against him...
if you remember Gai Asulin preferd continue the training with barcelona instead with the national team.. and what happend.
its almost the same thing.

Maybe, maybe not. As I said, time will tell. We'll just have to wait and see.

I don't see how it will be a scheduling conflict. The summer league is 2 weeks in July, and his national team tournament is in September. He should be able to manage both.

I think many in Israel will be happy for Casspi if he is in summer league. People will realize that this is a huge opportunity for not only Casspi, but also for future basketball players from Israel.

If I understand correctly, these things are not mutually exclusive, it's only some of the practices he would be missing to play in Summer League. In theory, he should be able to play in summer league, join back up with the national team for practices and then come back to the states and prepare for training camp once the tournament is done. Right?

As far as I know, EuroBasket starts somewhere beginning September.
If the summer league is only a week or two as someone said, then I guess it won't be a problem.

Still, the fact that Casspi doesn't just say "it won't be a problem, I can do both" when asked about the subject, implies that there might be some collisions. I just don't know the schedule well enough to tell you.

summer league in july
euro basket in september
training camp in october
nba season in november

hes going to be in shape when he comes to the nba...

Yeah, doesn't sound like it will be a problem as long as the coach doesn't mind him missing a week of practices. Shouldn't be a problem until he turns 30 and has to start making choices about what his body can handle over the off season.

I have to say I'm a bit confused.

The schedule looks good, no overlapping tournaments or leagues or anything. But still Omri being very hesitant when asked about it.

Maybe he's talking about national team PRACTICES?
Maybe he's planning to skip EuroBasket altogether and try to make the most of training in Sacramento before the NBA season starts?

i would love for him to play in the summer league imagine...

evans
Casspi (try if he can work at the SG)
Donte
Thompson
Hawes

thats almost your future starting line up.. and in those 5 or more games.. you can see if that line up can mesh and will have chemistry.. then if he goes back for eurobasket hes going to be facing competition...

it will be tiring but what he will get is tons of experience...

BTW its going to be Omri's first Euro Busket.. he wasnt able to play in the last one (in 2007)
whitch means u can see him for the first time at the highest lvls of the national busketball teams..

Just give it and Omri a bit of time to get here, get settled and take a good look at the calendar and scheduling. I think he's most likely pretty overwhelmed right now.

When rookies first come to the NBA it's like waking up and finding out you're on Mars. No matter how ready he may have thought he was, the reality is going to be much more mind-numbing than he ever could have imagined.

After a couple of days, when the first shock wears off, he'll be in a much better position to actually address these issues.

Personally, I can't see why he couldn't do both our summer league and his national team obligations. But we'll all know for sure soon enough, I promise.

:)

i think they broadcast some of the games here... id love to see some eurobasket.. loved how the fans were singing in that video of yours..

Actually the singing and jumping in the crowd is more of a club thing.
It's usually pretty low key when it comes to national teams. Still loud and fun, but not nearly as loud as in Euroleague basketball or in the local leagues, for example.

and the eurobusket starts at the 7th september :)

When Omri is signed a contract with the Kings (before summer league for sure), they are his employer. Last Kings game in Vegas Summer League is Friday, July 17. That leaves 7 weeks until Eurobasket. Should be plenty of time for Omri for National Team.

Then NBA training camps will start about 1 October with NBA season starting first of November. He will be a busy boy as Aenadin has just said. But the team will make its input to him about his playing time.
