Kingster
Hall of Famer
First, I could care less whether he is good with the community. If babies cry when he holds them, hand them a tissue. If he doesn't attend one Monarchs game in his life, I'll forgive him. Also, I don't care whether he is a "friend" to the Maloofs. Or Petrie. Or the players.
Above all, I want the coach to command respect - from everybody in the organization. They don't have to like him. Maybe he comes off a little to arrogant, a little too sure of himself for their taste. So be it. Sure, he's got to know X's and O's. Yes, he must know when to let a player learn from his mistakes and when to yank him because he's making the same mistake over and over again. Yes, he must develop the players' skills. But he must look a player in the eye and communicate what he demands as a coach. He must not be intimidated by his star players. There has got to be a line that he will not allow a player to cross.
And he must not be a toady that is subservient to either Petrie or the Maloofs. What I want is a guy who isn't afraid to disagree with the owners, or Petrie, but at the same time realizes that he's not going to win all the battles. I want him to be a fighter. If he thinks that trading for Artest is foolhardy, I want him to fight for that position with the Maloofs and with Petrie with all his might. And if his personna dwarfs theirs in the media, fine and dandy with me. If he calls out his team in the media for playing defense like wooses, great.
I don't want the "nice-guy" get-along-go-along kind of guy. I want a mensch, not a nebish, as the next coach of the Kings.
