Q and A with Paul Westphal

I'll post a few interesting questions and answers.

1. As it stands now, the Kings don't have a true backup center behind Spencer Hawes. Do you envision playing more small-ball with Jason Thompson and Sean May at the five this season, or are we likely to see another trade or signing before the season begins?

PW: Right now, the way that our roster is constituted, we do not have a lot of tall centers. Spencer Hawes certainly qualifies as a legitimate NBA 7-footer. And Jason Thompson has size. We have Kenny Thomas who had shown us that he also can defend the low post better than anyone else on our roster, but he is a little short to play center. There is also Sean May as an option. Those guys are the primary options to give us some minutes at that position. Whenever Spencer is not at center, then I guess we will be playing small ball, if that is what you want to call it.

2. How do you balance the need to win today (putting your best team on the floor) with the need to win next year (putting youth on the floor).

PW: I would say that I don’t quite look at it like that. I look at it like that as our mission is to win playoff games, and we want to make it happen as soon as possible. We need to become a team that gets to the playoffs so that we can win playoff games. Having the worst record in the league to build on, it certainly is a stretch to predict playoff success this year. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a hope or a goal, but it is a long way to go to get there. What we want to do is take positive steps toward putting our team in a position to win playoff games as soon as possible. A lot of that will be in terms of developing young players and giving them playing time to make mistakes and learn from them.

Ahh, the right words at least!

Seemed to be a whooooooole lot more questions than answers...I'm not saying that Westphal should answer every question posted but I'm surprised that he didn't answer more than he did.

Yeah, that was kind of strange. Had to cruise through quite a few questions with no replies or replied to by some other poster, to get to Westphal's answers.

He answered those questions pretty well imo. At least I understand a little bit more on his thinking process. Sound reasonable to me.

And thanks for posting. I rarely go around looking for stuff on the Kings...just here.

Can't wait for the coming season.

You mean, you aren't going to play useless vets over JT and Hawes? You sir, apparently don't know how we do things around here...

Well, that is why we signed Mason -- you want to keep the option open you understand. ;)

Yeah they should think of a better format for that. I like that people can post questions and he'll respond as he can, but having to wade through all the questions to find the answers doesn't seem quite like the best approach. I like where they're headed, but a few tweaks would bring a big improvement.

They need some sort of nesting software, so answers + similar discussions are attached under the questions.

Hey, come to think about it -- we kind of have that here. Coach can just do his next interview at KF. :p

I don't think he really meant giving the youth meaningful playing time. The most that I can see on this coach is give most of our youth garbage time for their development. But of course, I could be wrong. And I hope I am wrong.

I think it will be more of de javu for the upcoming season. We again have a coach who seems to be hungry for the wins at the expense of youth's development. Veterans ( however poor they play ) will be the primary options, just because they are the veterans. The mere mention of KT as the best defender of the low post and primary option should alarm us of an impending pain of watching Kings games again.

Again, you're presenting your own assumptions as though they're some kind of fact, and again I have to take exception to them.

Paul Westphal is NOT simply hungry for wins. I honesty cannot see how you can derive that out of the comments he's made or his track record in the NBA. It's easy to make blanket assumptions in September but I'm old-fashioned. I'm actually going to wait until the team has taken the court before jumping right off that particular cliff.

He is a MONSTER against Luke Walton. ;)

The scary part of that is "can defend the low post better than anyone else on our roster..." When the new coach refers to a guy whose ridden the pine for the past two years as being capable of better low post defense than anyone else on the team, that's not good...
