Programming Alert: Mayor Johnson will hold a press conference at 11 am

KJ got us into OT. Now time to finish this off and get that arena built. And after celebrating today, us fans have more work to do as well. Support your elected officials and encourage them to see this through. Forget all the mess we've been through. This is what winning feels like for now. But it's short lived unless we support the team. Calling the Maloofs names and not trusting them is probably well deserved. But that is not a battle to fight or even has a winner. If one thing we've learned in all this, is that the franchise is bigger than who owns it. We need to be the caretakers and breathe new life and support all that is needed to keep it going and thrive. So buy up those tickets!

"Maloofs said they will be fully cooperative".

If the arena is built, if the Kings are successful, the Maloofs will make money. If they don't "get it" that this is the time for a serious investment, they will have proven their fooliishness. Perhaps they have been backed into Sacramento but they are here and I sure hope they want to win. I've never seen anything that says they don't want to win.

The idea of others that they could sabotage the arena plans seems silly. The league is looking over their shoulders and knows what is a fair deal. All they need to do is step outside the lines of what is deemed a reasonable arena deal and they are in trouble. That's the most skeptical view.

They are fans. They are fans maybe more than businessmen. The easy part may be to turn the team over to Petrie and get one player. We are one player away from the move on up. Well, we are on the way up anyway but I mean WAAAAY up. :)

i can't imagine they would be completely cooperative knowing, if the deal isn't done within one year, the nba will allow them to move.

I will guarantee you they will do everything they can to not coroporate. They won't be as blantant as they were before, but they definately won't be helpful.

That would be a mistake on their part. I think if you've followed this, you can see that bad faith negotiations are fairly transparent when all the numbers and facts get exposed. They will have the NBA breathing down their back to make sure they aren't the reason any deal fails. But that said, the NBA is out to have a great deal for their owners. So there will be a rock solid deal that is good for the team. There just won't be any over the top crazy stuff like parking for unicorns. ;)

Press conference

After watching it, I fell VERY confident that this is getting done. My fear was that KJ would be fighting the battle mostly alone but the press conference made it clear that is not the case. He's got a lot of powerful people working with him. It feels like there's just too much momentum and political will for it to fail.

I’m not even an optimist by nature but I feel very optimistic about this.

Thank you Maloofs for (inadvertently) mobilizing and motivating Sacramento!

I feel the same way right now. If KJ says the Maloofs are on board, I believe him. He has been open and honest to this point.

If this all works out, I have no doubt in my mind that it will be because of the hard deadline and pressure from the NBA/Maloofs. Not to give credit to the Maloofs because they clearly wanted to move .. But that desire to move is the only thing getting the Sacramento government off their asses when it comes to buidling an arena.

This is really a key point. I believe that KJ think the Maloofs are on board. I hope he's right because it it will always be a very uphill battle to get an arena done in Sacramento. If the owners aren't helping that effort, or worse yet actively working against it I think there's little doubt that it will fail.

Also it is the reason that you and I got off our asses. This Sacramento problem did not rest solely with our Sacramento government. Come join us.

I don't believe that the Maloofs will actively work to sabotage the arena effort, but I also think that it's reasonable to assume that they won't be much help. They admitted that they won't be contributing much financially, and they've already refused to share their financial records with the ICON folks. So the only way that the arena can be done at this point is to do it with minimal involvement from the Maloofs. This doesn't mean that it's destined to fail. In fact, it's more likely to get community support if it's not viewed as a personal money making palace for the Maloofs. But the part I worry about is this-- say the arena gets approved, funding is lined up, a site is picked, everything's a go. But the Maloofs determine that they won't be getting enough of a profit from it because there isn't taxpayer or bond money going straight into their pockets. Is there a scenario that an NBA worthy arena goes forward, nut the bros. aren't happy enough with it so they still file for relocation? Because in the end, this isn't just about a new building. It's about a new building generating revenue for the owners.

I know this is a day for celebration, so on that note there's no need to dwell on concerns, but I think it's worth noting that getting a new arena alone may not be enough for these guys.

That I don't worry about. If the city gets a solid arena plan approved and funded and are ready to break ground on it I don't see the NBA allowing the Maloofs to leave. They'd vote down their relocation attempt if they attempted to file. There's no way that the city does everything asked of it and then has the team stripped away anyway. If that were possible, they'd just let them relocate this season.

The key is getting a plan (with funding) done.

Shennanigans are now limited hwoever with KJ having a more or less direct line to Stern and the owners.

The arena will be enough for the NBA so what the Maloofs want is not terribly relevant. I know that most people seem to understand this better than I but I still have trouble understanding how an arena will be great for the Kings' bottom line. Sure, there will be more suites and I hope the area does more than just "good enough." Build a freaking palace. After all this fuss, build a freaking palace. :)

Back to the suites - who will buy them? Stern? A team in Sacramento will never be a gold mine for an owner but that's not my problem a long as we keep the NBA happy. I want a winner. That's the bottom line. When I see a game, it's on a court and all the courts look alike. Same size but different colors. The rest is fluff and fancy. Unfortunately "fluff and fancy" is now considered NBA quality but that's Stern's dream and not mine.

KJ is the difference maker as he is the voice of reason. This is where the political side and the basketball side of KJ meld as if no one knows that. Point being, he can have his nose in all this and steer it in the proper direction. Why else did he become mayor? If warning signs go up, the NBA can send a representative to take a peek at what's going on. The Maloofs are under a microscope. Let's just not prejudge. For better or worse, they are ours and you can either fight with them - at which point they will want to leave - or welcome them back. Pretend. :)

But in all honesty, Arco isn't NCAA tournament or Madonna/Prince quality either. They have already started looking elsewhere and won't consider Arco at this point.

True dat. I wonder if the arena was inadequate or simply the least of competing arenas. In any case, reality is what it is and I will try to adapt. :)

You continue to rock, Doc.

CHESTBUMPS and FOREARM BASHES

*update: Ok just watched it. I can now tell you for certainty the Kevin Johnson WILL be the Gubner of Cali very soon. The guy is just a fantastic public speaker. KJ you rock the mutha****ing house.

Just as long as he doesn't run until the arena is built and the Kings are again playing in the WCF.

I know this is a little late but I didn’t get a chance to reply sooner and I was waiting for this whole thing to resolve before I said anything.

Kevin Johnson gets my apology. I was really upset when he basically came out and said the Kings could leave. I thought he gave up and wasn’t fighting for our team and then wham, the guy came to New York and fought for us. He did a great job..not only did he get other options for our team but he rallied the business world something the Maloofs haven't done.

A big thank you to our mayor because he really stepped up and came to keep our team but I like to thank everybody who was involved in the process – the fans, the business community, the other leaders stepping up, Carmichael Dave, etc…A big thank you to everybody who was involved in any shape or form.

Also a apology to the NBA, I guess they really do want to keep this team here, by the Maloofs comments before about what’s best for them and the NBA I thought the NBA wouldn’t even look further into our situation. I’m happy that they’re giving us one more shot and not allowing the Kings to run off to Anahiem.

Thanks for keeping the Kings here for one more year, now lets get the arena done and keep them here for the long run!
