Press conference - latest rumors, etc.

I was at the press conference today, and I was standing near Grant Napear.

A reporter from a Sac radio station (92.5 I think) went up to him and asked him:

"Are you a season ticket holder?"

"How often do you go to Kings games?"

I couldn't believe what I was witnessing!

What did Grant answer? :)

Seattle folks - remember the Sonics had dozens of investors. The fact Sacramento wants to do that is not an issue. #NBAKings #NBASeattle

Chris Daniels has annoyed me since this whole thing started a couple weeks ago. He has done nothing but write negativity about Sacramento's efforts all along...I don't wear rose colored glasses and will call a spade a spade, but he is annoying, in the same way their mayor is. smh

Spot on! KJ needed to wait until the sale number was locked in. He needs to beat $341 million to get a bigger offer in.

While the announcement is not spectacular, it is a step 1 of the plan to get there. A rather numerous local presence that has since increased to 20 investors @ $1 million each. KJ said all along that he needed to make sure that the ownership group had a local presence to it and that was going to be pretty difficult without there being a single multi-billionaire from Sacramento so its the weight of numbers. The "Whale" now comes in and ponies up the rest.

I am surprised though that Chris Webber was not one of the investors presented today. I still get the feeling he is up to his eyeballs in this but he cannot be 'The Whale" in this scenario as his pockets are not deep enough.

2 are still anon = CWebb and Chuck?

He could be. A couple names were not revealed, right?

I believe C-Webb is playing it right, too. He is wearing his heart on his sleeves without showing his hand in any involvement. I do believe Webb, along with a couple other former Kings will be showing their faces in Sacramento sometime in the not too distant future and talking about their involvement with our/KJ's plan.

edit: Oh, and for the record...all I'll say is more than one 'whale' is a GOOD thing!(and no, C-Webb isn't one of those 'whales', but he is a part of the plan)

If the Green Bay model is used or at least simulated, I could see several ex-Kings, especially those with unis hanging from the rafters, being a small part owner of $1 mil. THAT would make the Kings unique. We have great fans but to have players loyal to a team that has not been the greatest is very, very cool.

I doubt that, or at least if it is true it would only be until the seaosn were over or something. A $1mil contribution from Webb anonymously doesn't actually help much. His value is precisely his public figure. Chuck maybe. But I think if I were doing this at least I would be working with tiers -- as many $1mil investors as I could put together from locals. Then a tier of a small group of midrange people, including Webber or other face people. Then the big money whale.

This is a first step. Admittedly a little disappointed upon arriving hope to see this was the major announcement as i expected more, but at the same time I won't judge it until the follow up news later this week.

It's likely imo that the major investor or "whale" is pretty much in place and is well aware of these 19 local investors, and all parties are likely working together behind the scenes, so if the major investor supports the local investors stepping up with 1M apiece, I see no harm in that. It'd be a working partnership.

It's actually 20 investors now, so at worst this team just became 20M less expensive to a majority investor, when in addition to not having to pay the 77M loan, moving expenses and relo fee, adds up and makes it even more affordable, as small a % as it may seem.

Not only unique, but if enough of them still haven't blown their money (a common athlete problem) a significant group of them would be a nice symbol. But I'd take just Webb.

Can someone tell me why seattle is making a big deal about the non refundable payment made to the maloofs?
Why would the NBA be libel if the BOG shoots down the deal and Hansen loses his deposit? He made the deal. He knows the pitfalls.

What's the NBA's policy on countries buying teams?

Plus, there's no reason it won't be 21 or 25 or more soon. It only took the mayor since last Thursday until today to round up the original 19 local investors. I expect more onboard at $1M apiece in coming days with the major equity partner only happy to see it - as well as all us Sacramento Kings fans.

i agree. i think today's presser will encourage a few more investors to come out

This only adds more to Johnson's track record. Ten million in new sponsorship money last time around. It just shows how viable the market is and how the market had been left to rot. The names that have been dropping in terms of who knows who are beyond impressive and that may get the BOG attention.

I was wanting to ask this question:

Why does the national consensus say that Sac must meet or exceed Hansen's offer ?

Isn't it hundred(s) of millions of dollars less that Sac has to come up with?

Why isn't this being mentioned more as a big monetary ADVANTAGE for Sac?

uh oh ladies and gents

“@bgpappa: @CarmichaelDave More jabs?” Ehhh. I'd say an uppercut. At least a strong cross combo ;)

Mate, for $350 million, you could buy whole of Serbia :p

Seriously, Vlade can't help his grass roots team much where 3 million euros would get them out of debt entirely and an extra million would ensure that they can add some experience to the team.

On the minority owners, I am with Brick on this one. C-Webb's name in all this would bring more value than the $1 million so unless there is a major twist in all this, I doubt that one of the anons is C-Webb.

I don't believe the details have been released but it is far more expensive to move a team from one city to another than stay in their home town. Let me make a guess at a few numbers that Hansen needs to pay and a local group does not. There is a relocation fee of $75 mil. The loan on Arco needs to be paid off at $77 mil and perhaps more. But let's see how that adds up from what I have seen written. It has been written that a local group would need to come up with $340 mil and that would match the $525. That is not accurate but you get the idea. Also, the present ownership already has about 35% who want to maintain ownership. Only the Maloofs and one other party are selling. In any case, the amount that Hansen has to come up with to match what a local group already has (the present local owners) and the other fees is very significant.

I cannot speculate as to why it is not being mentioned.

In a normal battle of bids, the highest bid would win but this is not normal. As far as I know, the BOG sets its own rules as to what is acceptable. There already is a bias in the BOG that the team stay and that the franchise not be obliterated from the annals of history.

Wishful thinking like in the personnel forum but it would be wonderful if the three most prominent "whales" that have been mentioned went in it all together.

Ellison wants a team and some here have hinted/wondered if having a home "locally" would be good enough. Ellison with the controlling interest in the team.

Eli (don't remember the rest of the name) and Burkle have worked together on projects. There was a Times article (Carmichael Dave either tweeted or retweeted the link) that talked about how Eli helped with the Staples Center in LA and how he is now more concerned with his legacy. It also talked about the relationship between the two. Helping revitalize not one but two downtown's can go a long ways in terms of a legacy. Burkle was hinted at being interested in the downtown mall. Eli and Burkle with the stadium and mall part of it. If I remember the maps correctly, the mall and the rail yards were nearly in spitting distance. One could help the other.

However, like the trade threads .................

Board of Governors meeting that will include Kings / Seattle / Sacramento showdown scheduled for April 18-19.

So, looks like were gonna be going through this roller coaster for 3 more months, then we find out the fate of Sacramento:

A: No NBA team, Sac Economy tanks, the city of Sac will not be a nice place
B: New owners with deep pockets, new downtown Arena, Downtown Sac revitalized, New owners that actually spend money to put a winning team on the court

NOTE: I just moved the whale sighting and subsequent comments into a new thread. :) Tonight is a good night to be a Kings fan.

:)
