Press conference - latest rumors, etc.

Seattle is winning the PR battle and that's a big part of this war.
Yes, but note this is a WAR not a battle. I have advanced degrees in Communications and have worked in the field and taught it o College students. What The Mayor is doing now is launching his end of the PR WAR. YES the sale/move was the BIG story and they stretched it out as long as they could. Consequently all eyes were on Seattle for the past several weeks. The good news for Sacramento is that's all they have, so now it is Sac's turn to try to turn all eyes to Sacramento for as long as possible. Once the BIG story is out then anything else said gets no play, also once the official counter offer is revealed then the ball (attention) goes back up to the Emerald City. So by strategy in order to roll out a campaign designed to win by keeping Sacramento in the spotlight hopefully until the BOG meets it would be necessary for each and every press conference/release to be BIGGER news than the last. This was an introduction. Letting the media know who the local team (Think Home Court advantage) and what their intentions are. Was it news to us? no bu the messages was not for fans who want the team to stay, they already have us. This was aimed at the general public and more importantly the BOG. Not a bad first step, I hope the Mayors spin team can keep it up.

JFC, give it a rest. You work for TMZ or something? Beglad he shares as much as he does. You keep prodding him he's just going to stop sharing.

Jesus lay off. I'm not prodding him I was just curious Because thats what he made it sound like and I was going to say that its pretty awesome if his boss is one of the people helping us!

I think KJ needed to come out and respond to the proposed sale to Hansen... He needs to keep the movement moving on our side. Once hope is lost, so are the Kings.

My take is that I don't mind the strategy of breaking up the two different announcements of local support and the larger investor(s). However, I am with those that would not have stated the exact amount, but I don't believe it will be that big of a factor. As stated by another though, just hearing it out of context does seem "small-time."

Seriously, announcing 19M like it was a huge deal is like one of your friends telling you he'll chip in $19 bucks for gas if he can ride shotgun on a road trip from Sacramento to Miami. What a uneventful press conference.

**EDIT** Sorry, everyone. I don't mean to be negative and I'm certainly not trying to bring anybody down. I'm just being honest in the fact that I was expecting much, much more impactful to be announced. I fully agree with those that stated that this news was better off in a Press Release or not announcing the dollar amounts at all. It does make Sacramento appear as "small time" and appearances are everything right now. Heck, the Seattle group is GIVING away more money than what was just announced. Perhaps it's KJ's strategy to announce a minnow a few days before the whale so that the whale appears bigger than it actually is .. I don't know....

Have you seen the movie Sum of all Fears?

First I like to give them a taste. Then I let them think about for a while. Then I tell them.

Still didn't need the dollar amount.

This presser was neither good nor bad. Everything hinges on the whale. It had better be a blue whale and not one of those little dwarf sperm whales.

Hey Bricky, I think we have our next theme - Whale sizes

BTW, everyone will forget the $19M number by the time the whale is announced anyway, he was showing that he has 19 prominent members of the community willing to help financially support the team. It's a bigger deal than people think.

Agreed.

One thing Sacramento needs to show to keep the team is the support of the community. Just like when KJ took $10 million and dropped it on the table to keep the Kings from going to Anaheim, this shows a vested local interest to keep the team here at the LOCAL level. Not just a whale, but the smaller fish too. It goes to show the breadth of support here. It's symbolic. Take this, combined with the HereWeBuy ticket sales promised, the upcoming whale announcement, the involvement of AEG at the arena level, the show of support by Crown Downtown at the City Council meetings (to begin again soon, so show the **** up and support this effort), etc., it all shows local support at various levels in the community and the desire to keep the team here with our new arena deal and proposed ownership group.

See the forest for the trees, people.

No probably not. I personally would have gone with the message that all of the buyers was committing over million each, but in the end the story is no really about he amount of money yet. I suspect the spin Dr.'s felt that the Whale would be more relevant if they could play him as a BIG game changer. And of course once the Whale emerges then the numbers for a offer become the topic and that allows folks up in Seattle to make adjustments.

Completely disagree.
This felt extremely small time. $19 million is peanuts and I'm sure the seattle group feels pretty dam confident after this press conference that they don't have much to worry about. KJ should have held off until he had a guy with substantial (billions) money in the bag.

Let them feel confident.

If this press conference/announcement is received as lackluster/unimpressive, it will only serve to make the big announcement later in the week all the more impressive, underscoring the "huge comeback" storyline. It's all about creating media momentum. The kind of momentum that can generate, after Seattle was pretty much reported to definitely be getting a team next year, really bursts Seattle's media bubble.

And they absolutely DO have the guy with billions in the bag. That's the whole point. That is precisely why they threw out this little tid bit at this time. The 19M was really more couched as part of local fan-like support. You want to separate that from the giant money whale bomb dropped later this week. It covers all your bases.

Ah but see, here was the part they did right -- they waited until Seattle committed to a number, and it was signed and agreed to by both Seattle and the Maloofs. They got them to lock in their number. Now its a sitting target rather than a bidding situation.

Absolutely! I really have great professional respect for how Mayor Johnson and his team have played this so far. I was only setting the likely time line for campaign, folks should NOT freek ou if the offer it's self does not go public until just before the BOG presentation.

The only thing I would have changed would be to include the words "at least"

'We have 19 investors that have agreed to at least 1 Million a piece.'

We'll agree to disagree. He's explained why he announced the 19 LOCAL contributors. You may not think it's the right business move to make but that's just your opinion. KJ is making sure everything is pretty transparent, which is exactly the right thing to do IMHO.

Step 1: Unity as a community...a BIG check!

Remember, this is all a part of our big picture we HAVE to paint and show to the BOG's...something Seattle didnt have when they lost the Sonics.

Having a former owner involved with this $19 Million seems like a bigger deal than the dollar amount. Not sure if he still has connections in the NBA, but he at least has experience with the particulars of selling a team.

Ya, CD tweeted that that was HUGE. Not sure if his reasoning is the same as yours.

Once the BOG approves that the team is moving to seattle THEN the kings are lost. There is no measurement of hope that comes into play here. The only two factors that havent been revealed yet is the counteroffer from sacramento and the BOG's final decision.

Grant just said that a 20th person has stepped up with $1 million. FYI.

Which is just more political capital, really. As that number continues to tick up during the week, momentum will come with it, and make it virtually impossible to move the team once the Whale is announced. As Brick said, Seattle is already locked into a number. They're screwed. Maloofs will be forced to sell once the offer is matched or slightly bested.

Captain Ahab takes issue with your view of sperm whales.

this may have been part of what KJ was referencing when he was saying he wanted Sacto to be the NBA's Green Bay -- try to stack up a bunch of $1 million investments in the team ala the Green Bay "shares" model, and then slap a whale on top for the bulk money.

Spot on! KJ needed to wait until the sale number was locked in. He needs to beat $341 million to get a bigger offer in.

While the announcement is not spectacular, it is a step 1 of the plan to get there. A rather numerous local presence that has since increased to 20 investors @ $1 million each. KJ said all along that he needed to make sure that the ownership group had a local presence to it and that was going to be pretty difficult without there being a single multi-billionaire from Sacramento so its the weight of numbers. The "Whale" now comes in and ponies up the rest.

I am surprised though that Chris Webber was not one of the investors presented today. I still get the feeling he is up to his eyeballs in this but he cannot be 'The Whale" in this scenario as his pockets are not deep enough.

I have been a big fan Sherman Alexie since I first read "Tonto and the Lone Ranger Fist Fight In Heaven" I love him even more now.

Dear Seattle, don't celebrate the NBA for giving us the Kings in the same way they took the Sonics.

Dear Sacramento Kings fans, I honor your pain and fear. And I hope that your city finds a way to keep your team.

I was at the press conference today, and I was standing near Grant Napear.

A reporter from a Sac radio station (92.5 I think) went up to him and asked him:

"Are you a season ticket holder?"

"How often do you go to Kings games?"

I couldn't believe what I was witnessing!
