Rank (Last Wk) Team Rec. Comment

1 (2) Suns 11-2 You have to go all the way back to 1980-81 to find a Suns team that started this hot (14-2). That's two years before Mr. Stoudemire was born, in case you're wondering.
2 (1) Spurs 11-3 Committee, as you know, doesn't believe in jinxes. But those who do no doubt noticed that Spurs, like Mavs the week before, lost their first game after claiming the No. 1 ranking.
3 (7) SuperSonics 13-2 Don't be smug, Seattle. Surely you didn't expect your Supes to be the first team to reach 10 wins -- or to rank third in the NBA in rebounding differential after a month.
4 (5) Timberwolves 8-5 The best thing you can say about Wolves' up-and-down start is that they were 9-8 in November last season. And you surely remember how that turned out.
5 (3) Heat 10-5 Shaq's latest Flash praise/Kobe slam: '(Wade) is the best second-year player I've seen since Michael Jordan. He keeps everybody involved, and that's the sign of a great player.'
6 (6) Kings 8-5 It's only one home loss, after a 6-0 start, but it's the fourth to Minny (including playoffs) in the teams' past six Arco dates. Does that make it a trend?
7 (8) Mavericks 10-5 The good thing about knowing the pain of many ankle sprains, as Dirk would tell you, is knowing how to come back from them faster than the docs expect.
8 (10) Pacers 10-4 The committee questioned Indy's depth last season, calling it mythical. No one can dare say so this season if Pacers keep winning without their three best players.
9 (12) Cavaliers 9-4 From Dept. O' The Bizarre: Only three teams ever have won five straight after an 0-3 start, and two of them come from Cleveland. That would be 1999's Cavs and current Cavs.
10 (9) Pistons 6-7 Pistons are struggling so much without the suspended Big Ben that the committee is starting to think it overestimated the revamped champs' depth.
11 (13) Magic 8-4 Magic might sit only second in the Southeast, but before Miami's win over Boston on Sunday night, Orlando was (if only briefly) No. 1 in Florida and the division.
12 (11) Lakers 8-6 So Mailman's agent says his client won't be back on the floor until January at the earliest. It's safe to say Kobe is willing to wait as long as he needs to for the extra help.
13 (14) Nuggets 7-6 The home-heavy schedule has certainly helped, but it would be just 'Melo's luck for his freshly tweaked ankle to keep him out of Thursday's national TV showdown with LeBron.
14 (4) Jazz 8-6 Jazz have obviously been reading too much fawning press (probably on ESPN.com). How on Earth could a Jerry Sloan team be the cure-all for New Orleans AND Chicago? And at home?
15 (24) Clippers 8-6 Best team in L.A.? Not quite yet. But it was a better November than anyone could have predicted.
16 (23) Trail Blazers 7-6 Because the Northwest is the league's toughest division so far, instead of the Midwest as expected, Blazers find themselves -- yikes -- five games back of their regional rivals from Seattle.
17 (18) Knicks 6-6 Isiah has said he wants to be .500, at worst, after 20 games. Us? We want to see how Lenny handles Allan Houston's return with Jamal Crawford surging.
18 (20) Wizards 7-5 Here's wishing Coach Jordan a speedy recovery. Wiz are giving up a lot of points, but they're scoring lots, too, making this surprising start too good to miss.
19 (15) Rockets 6-9 Denver's gradual recovery means that Rockets have launched to the top of the league's Most Disappointing list. It's a state law that every team in Texas should be at least .500.
20 (21) 76ers 6-7 Anyone else sense that Obie isn't thrilled with Philly's early play? Except for AI, the new coach has tried at least two different starters at every position.
21 (16) Grizzlies 5-9 Unsolicited advice for Czar Fratello: Cut the 10-man rotation down to eight or nine and try to get Pau and Bonzi on the floor more, for starters.
22 (17) Celtics 4-8 The only solace for the team that keeps losing close games -- and for those who picked Boston to win the Atlantic -- is that no one in the division has a winning record.
23 (19) Raptors 6-9 As if Coach Mitchell hasn't seen enough already in this debut season -- Pape, too -- Raps play their next six on the road. That doesn't sound good.
24 (22) Bucks 4-7 This is not what Bucks will want to hear, but it's the truth: Even Atlanta has more road wins (one) than they do.
25 (27) Bobcats 3-9 What a night for Brevin Knight on Tuesday. With 19 assists, he had three more than the whole Detroit team.
26 (25) Hawks 2-11 It's getting close to official. You'd have to say gutty Bobcats are the better team.
27 (26) Nets 2-11 You have to hope Zo continues to speak his mind, no matter what threats management issues, because there's no other reason to pay attention to Jersey . . . until J-Kidd returns.
28 (28) Warriors 3-10 We've identified the problem: Warriors are undefeated as a franchise when they go to triple-overtime . . . but, including last week, it's only happened three times in their history.
29 (29) Hornets 1-11 We've identified the problem: Hornets have just one game left in Utah this season. Losing Magliore obviously doubles the pain, although that should hush the Vince trade talk for a bit.
30 (30) Bulls 1-10 We've identified the problem: Bulls have no games left in Utah this season . . . and can't keep the circus from coming to Chicago so early, which starts every season with a killer trip.

Here's the whole list (without the icons or formatting, of course):

1 Phoenix (2)
13-2 Quibble with our fourth No. 1 in as many weeks, will you? Check this -- They've won nine straight, Amaré's playing like an All-Star and Nash was Player of the Month. That's what I'm talkin' aboot!
2 Seattle (1)
14-3 Only No. 2 because the Suns have been tanning hides as of late. We can't flog this stat enough: .395. That is what the Sonics are shooting from behind the arc -- as a team!
3 San Antonio (3)
13-3 Four wins last week -- and five in a row overall -- by an average of 16.5 points. Next up: The defending NBA champion Pistons with Ben Wallace back.
4 Sacramento (5)
10-5 They said the Kings were dead. Who are they? They are obviously the people who haven't seen Sacramento win nine of its last 10 games.
5 Orlando (8)
9-5 They've averaged 113 ppg in their last four to vault past Miami to the top of the Southeast Division. Kudos to coach Davis, who was named the East's Coach of the Month for Nov.
6 Minnesota (7)
9-5 Lost to the undermanned Pacers on Thanksgiving, but have been perfect since, gorging themselves to the tune of 114.3 ppg in their three consecutive wins.
7 Dallas (6)
10-6 Nowitzki's digits in the last three games: 25.3 ppg and 15.0 rpg. Got waxed in San Antonio as asst. coach Avery Johnson took the helm for an evening in a strange Don Nelson "experiment."
8 Miami (4)
10-6 The last two times Shaq has led the Heat in scoring, the Heat have lost. The last time in the last week D-Wade led Heat in scoring: A win. Make of that what you will.
9 Cleveland (11)
9-6 He's third in the league in scoring (25.5), he has more total steals than anyone (36) and he was the East's Player of the Month for Nov. And to think, Bron is only 19. So good, so soon.
10 Indiana (12)
10-5 Let's just give it up right now for Rick Carlisle. (Applause!) I mean, please, to have this team at 10-5 without O'Neal, Jackson and Artest, in addition to all the injuries is just amazing.
11 L.A. Clippers (21)
10-6 They've won five consecutive games and no one's been larger than Brand, who has averaged 27.3 ppg in his last three games. Schedule's nice too: Next four are at home.
12 Detroit (10)
7-7 He may not get the hardware, but is there any player more valuable to his team than Big Ben? They went 3-3 while he was away. He returns in time to take on the Spurs on Fri.
13 Washington (15)
8-5 They're spankin' folks. Their only loss in their last six games was a 116-114 OT thriller to Philly. Three starters -- Jamison, Arenas, Hughes -- average more than 19.5 ppg.
14 L.A. Lakers (13)
9-7 Brian Cook had a career night in Milwaukee on Tue. (25 pts., 11 rebs.), only the second time Kobe hasn't led the team in scoring this season. Losing to the Bulls on Wed. drops 'em a notch.
15 Portland (17)
8-6 Handed the Sonics their only loss in last six games on Tuesday. They have three days to prepare for the rematch at Key Arena in Seattle on Sat.
16 Denver (16)
8-6 Have won six of their last seven, but are still fourth in the rugged Northwest. Five guys average double-figure scoring and five different players have led them in the last five games.
17 New York (18)
8-6 Their record may not stand out, but it's good enough to lead the Atlantic. They've won three straight but head out on the road for four of their next five.
18 Utah (9)
8-8 Facing at least a month without their Mr. Everything -- Kirilenko -- who's out with a sprained knee. And it doesn't get easier with Mavs, Heat and Magic on the docket.
19 Philadelphia (23)
6-8 A.I.'s having his best season since his MVP year (2001) as he's in third in the NBA in scoring (25.5 ppg), fifth in assists (7.7 apg) and ninth in steals (1.85 spg).
20 Boston (20)
6-8 Ricky Davis has flourished off the bench in the Hub averaging 16.3 ppg as a sixth man. After the Raptors on Fri., the C's are looking at a killer five-game trip West starting Sun.
21 Toronto (22)
7-10 Though they've lost three of their last four, you can't say they're boring as they've scored 103.5 ppg in that stretch. Unfortunately, they've also given up 110.8 ppg in those four.
22 Houston (19)
6-10 Struggled mightily of late, losing their last four games. T-Mac's averaging 20.2 ppg this season, almost eight fewer than last, and only 18.0 ppg during the losing streak.
23 Memphis (14)
5-11 Set adrift by Hubie's retirement last week, the Grizz have lost six in a row. Sources say new coach Mike Fratello, the Czar of the Telestrator, has tremendous upside.
24 Milwaukee (24)
4-9 Turnovers, missed shots, offensive fouls. Coaches don't like these, especially in the closing moments of close games. Bucks have had their share in their last two ugly losses.
25 Golden State (25)
3-11 Dunleavy Jr. and Co. got it handed to them by dad and the Clips twice last week. Good news: Looks like Troy Murphy's back. Murph had 25 and 17 in loss to Wolves on Wed.
26 Charlotte (26)
3-10 Led by Keith Bogans, they have six players averaging double figures in scoring. Have won two of last four, but head out on rugged four-game West swing starting Mon.
27 New Jersey (27)
3-12 Scored 99 in win over Bobcats on Tue., the closest they've come to scoring 100 points in regulation this season. At 21.2 ppg, R-Jeff leads team in scoring by more than 10 points.
28 Atlanta (28)
2-12 Have lost seven straight games. How unlucky have the Hawks been? A Knick who had gone 1-11 from deep hits game-winning 3-pointer in OT on Wed. despite 'Toine's 36 and 13.
29 Chicago (30)
2-10 Nice win against the Lakers in their first home game since Nov. 13. Positive: Won two of last three. Negative: They give up 9.41 ppg more than they score (90.0 ppg).
30 New Orleans (29)
1-13 They have the worst record in the league and their All-Star center, Jamaal Magloire, will miss three months with a dislocated finger. Ouch! (On so many levels.)

I don't trust any power rankings that puts The Magic above the Mavs, T-wolves, and Heat. Not to mention they are placed above the pacers and the Pistons. Thats Ludicrous!

Heheheheh. I noticed that, too!~

I do so love power rankings!

S£im will be thrilled. He going to have quite a TP supply built up by the end of the season.

1 (2) Spurs 15-3 Perhaps the best part about Spurs' start is all the rest Duncan's getting. TD is averaging just 34.9 mpg because SA has been so dominant, and that's mileage saved for the playoffs.
2 (4) Timberwolves 11-5 Sam I Am is heating up and KG was already scorching. How scorching? Six times already KG has been within two assists of a triple-double.
3 (1) Suns 14-3 The reality, Suns fans, is this: Phoenix would have dropped from the top spot even with a win over Minny. Don't get down; San Antonio is simply playing that well.
4 (3) SuperSonics 15-3 It's only a bad rumor. Sonics didn't really petition the league to play all 82 games in November. They're even off to an encouraging 2-0 start in December.
5 (6) Kings 12-5 Remember that 0-3 start? From those depths, Kings and their empty bench have quickly climbed within sight (two games) of the Pacific Division lead
6 (10) Pistons 8-8 Getting better with Ben back, but they had to get better. Pistons were .500 only once last season -- this season we've seen the champs at 1-1, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8.
7 (7) Mavericks 12-6 Armstrong has to help Mavs' shaky passing game. Or maybe Nowitzki, arguably Dallas' best passer, can start passing to himself.
8 (9) Cavaliers 11-6 We still don't see LeBron winning the MVP trophy this season, given how Garnett and Duncan are playing, but he sure looks like the best player in the East. Agreed?
9 (5) Heat 11-7 Heat is now 10-2 against the East and 1-5 against the West. Miami's also hoping Shaq's hamstring is the real culprit for this trend: O'Neal has been held below 20 points in eight of 18 games.
10 (11) Magic 11-5 Seeing Magic atop the East standings is the last thing T-Mac needed, but it's not just Grant Hill's doing. Orlando also tops the league in rebound margin at (wow) nearly plus-5 per game.
11 (13) Nuggets 9-7 The good news: Nuggets have quietly won eight of 11. The bad news: Denver's seven-game, 11-day trip is up next, while the pressure on 'Melo just keeps building.
12 (15) Clippers 10-7 Best team in L.A.? Who cares? The stats say Clippers -- get this -- are the league's best shooting team (.483) and its best passing team (24.5 assists per game).
13 (12) Lakers 10-7 Lakers' start is a tough read, with only two of their wins (over Denver and the crosstown Clips) coming against teams with winning records. And that 1-1 record vs. Chicago doesn't help.
14 (18) Wizards 10-5 The schedule hasn't been the toughest, true, but 10 wins this early is still an achievement. Last season, Wiz didn't see win No. 10 until Jan. 10, when they improved to 10-25.
15 (8) Pacers 10-7 No one in the locker room is counting the shopping days 'til Christmas. The only countdown of consequence in Indy: 40 days 'til Jermaine returns, pending appeal.
16 (16) Trail Blazers 8-8 Blazers had the league's second-stingiest defense when they woke up Sunday (89.0 ppg). Then Phoenix swept through town and dropped 121 points on them.
17 (14) Jazz 8-9 Bad time to lose AK-47. The first four games without their rangy defensive ace saw Jazz face Spurs, Suns, Sonics and Mavs ... with only Phoenix, the league's hottest road team, at the Delta Center.
18 (22) Celtics 7-9 The Pierce-Rivers blowup got all the attention, but the bigger development is Boston finally winning a couple close games (Milwaukee, Toronto) after blowing several late leads.
19 (17) Knicks 8-8 Just when you think they've turned a corner, Knicks lose to Orlando and Charlotte to remind us how much trouble they've had in the new millennium just playing .500 ball.
20 (27) Nets 4-12 How glad is Coach Frank to have his point guard back? Without J-Kidd, Nets have exactly one guy (Jefferson at 20.8 ppg) averaging more than 12 points per game.
21 (21) Grizzlies 6-12 Word on the street is that The Logo wanted Muss to replace Hubie and ownership wanted The Czar. The key now: Will the players want to listen to either one or, preferably, both?
22 (19) Rockets 7-11 At Van Gundy's request, T-Mac is vowing to be more aggressive. The real problem in Houston: JVG is hesitant to ask the same from Yao, probably because Yao, who's almost always passive, looks tired already.
23 (20) 76ers 6-10 Tuesday's visit to lowly Atlanta is a serious opportunity for Sixers. That's because Philly has lost seven straight road games since an Opening Night victory at Boston.
24 (25) Bobcats 4-10 How sweet must these numbers be: With a payroll that comes in about $5 million under Shaq's $27.7 million salary, Bobcats are on a 23-59 pace. Stunning.
25 (23) Raptors 7-12 Did you notice how quickly Raps went from urging Vince to give the new regime a chance to granting his wish to try to trade him back to the States?
26 (24) Bucks 4-10 Our man Redd is relieved to be done with Lakers, averaging just 7.0 ppg against Kobe (on 19-percent shooting) instead of his usual 25. But real relief for Bucks would be road win No. 1.
27 (30) Bulls 2-12 If you're willing to twist this stat into a cause for optimism, Bulls can claim history is on their side. In 1976-77, Chicago went 0-10 in November and still made the playoffs.
28 (28) Warriors 4-12 They've got Mully and Richmond in the front office . . . and not a soul on the roster who can shoot anything like either one. And with no shooters, Warriors can't score.
29 (26) Hawks 2-14 In the quest to come up with something -- anything -- positive, all we can tell you is Hawks have the league's best 40-year-old. In fact, at age 42, Kevin Willis is the only 40-year-old.
30 (29) Hornets 1-14 The bad start is a bit more understandable when you remember Hornets are down three All-Stars (Baron, Mash and Magliore). But shouldn't they have won a home game by now? By accident?

Phoenix (1) 16-3With the exception of their loss to Minnesota last Friday, the Suns are still sizzlin' at 117.3 ppg in last three. Best things about them: They force teams to play at their pace. Shine on!
1</FONT>
Seattle (2)16-3One major sports internet site asked: "Are the Sonics really that good?" Nah, they're really just faking it. A win over the equally-hot Spurs in San Antonio should convince everyone.
3</FONT>
San Antonio (3)16-4Had won eight straight before falling to the really good Sonics at home. Next three -- at Houston, vs. Cavs, vs. Magic -- should be a nice little three-game test.
4</FONT>
Sacramento (4) 13-5They've won five straight and have poured in 113.7 ppg in last three. You know by now how we like triple digits. This week, they take a tour of the Midwest: Minny, Mil-ay-wau-kay and Indy.
5</FONT>
Minnesota (6)12-6This team should come with a disclaimer: Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Start slow, have a good December. They've played well lately, beating Suns, Clips on the road.
6</FONT>
Dallas (7)13-7Went 3-1 since the last rankings, losing only to Detroit (albeit at home). Still, gotta talk about Dirk. His digits in the last four: 53, 30, 27 and 34. That's 36 points per. Ehrfürchtig! (Awesome!)
7</FONT>
Orlando (5)12-6Sorry that the best record in the East only gets you to No. 7, but that's how it is this week. Dwight Howard turned 19 on Dec. 8 and scored 17 and grabbed 11 boards on his birthday.
8</FONT>
Miami (8)13-7Went 3-1 in four road ... since last ... rankings ... Sorry, was distracted by new Heat dancer photo gallery. Back to business. Udonis has been an Adonis on the glass at 9.8 per in last four.
9</FONT>
Cleveland (9) 12-7Had a really good week until they got punked by 28 in Chicago on Wednesday. Still, they lead the Central. Expect the following pattern to continue: LeBron scores, Gooden boards.
10</FONT>
L.A. Clippers (10)11-7New Clippers marketing slogan: Fifty-three (maybe 58) minutes of NBA action! Last two games have gone to OT, losing one to Minnesota, winning one against the Bobcats.
11</FONT>
Denver (16) 11-7Well, well, well. Look who we have here. Winners of five of their last six and eight of their last 10, the Nuggets have just started a brutal seven-game, 10-day East Coast swing.
12</FONT>
Detroit (12)10-8Reeled off three consecutive impressive wins. Most impressive? A 16-point pasting of the Mavs in Dallas. Big Ben has seemingly rediscovered his spring with 31 boards in last two games.
13</FONT>
Washington (13) 10-6Had won four straight games before tripping at home against the Nugs. Every night, the Wizards have a different hero. Lately, Arenas has been hot, averaging 25.0 per.
14</FONT>
L.A. Lakers (14)10-8Went 1-1 in two games this week, but, as usual, the topic of conversation has been how Kobe and Karl can't co-exist. Sigh. Have epic showdown with Clippers at STAPLES on Saturday.
15</FONT>
New York (17)9-9Take the Atlantic. Please. At .500, the Knicks lead the division. They end four-game road trip on Friday in Washington. Nazr Mohammed's digits in last four: 12.0 ppg, 12.5 rpg.
16
Portland (15)8-8Blazers have taken it on the chin this past week losing by 10 to the Sonics and 22 to the Suns. Have struggling Celtics and Jazz (home-and-home) before six-game Eastern swing.
17
Indiana (10)10-8Injuries and suspensions have taken their toll as they've dropped five in a row. Reggie Miller looked spry Tuesday, scoring 19 in the fourth quarter in a loss to the Bucks.
18</FONT>
Memphis (23)8-12Have won three of their last four and Pau's gone off, scoring 23.5 ppg and grabbing nine rebounds per. After playing Heat in Miami on Dec. 10, next four are at FedEx Forum.
19</FONT>
Houston (22)8-11They've followed a tough OT loss to Dallas last Thursday with two wins. Sure, they were against the Sixers and Hornets, but you play who's on the schedule. Yao was leading scorer in both.
20</FONT>
Boston (20)7-10After beating Toronto last Friday, the Celtics have lost first two of a five-game Western swing. C's have allowed 229 points in those two. Dec. 11 game in Seattle should be interesting.
21</FONT>
Utah (18)8-11Have looked lost -- as in lost six in a row -- since Kirilenko hit the IR, though streak contains defeats to Mavs, Heat and Magic. Five-game East swing starts next Wednesday.
22
Philadelphia (19)6-12Lost all five games of a five-game trip, including a loss to the Hawks. Returned home, got pasted by the Timberwolves by 35. Philly papers are looking for a scapegoat.
23
Toronto (21) 7-14VC strained his left Achilles tendon on Wednesday night. Lost last five games of a six-game trip. Next three are at home, but it won't be easy as the Nuggets, Heat and Timberwolves visit.
24
Milwaukee (24) 5-11No Van Horn, no Kukoc, no T.J. Ford and no rhythm whatsoever. They've had the opportunities to win (see Heat game on Dec. 8), but let them slip away. Six of next eight at home.
25</FONT>
New Jersey (27)5-13Got the best point guard (J-Kidd, natch) in the game back, though trade rumors swirl. Have a relatively soft slate (vs. N.O., at Atlanta, vs. N.Y.) in the next week. Could pick up some wins.
26
Golden State (25)5-13Went 2-2 last week, while losing to Lakers and Suns. (No shame in that). Get Magic and Bobcats at home before heading out on a four-game trip, which includes the Texas Triangle -- gulp!
27
Charlotte (26) 4-12After beating New York at home last Friday, headed West for a four-game trip. They've lost their first two. Have the blazing-hot Suns on Friday before Golden State in Sunday.
28</FONT>
Chicago (29)3-13Clobbered Central-leading Cleveland by 28 on Dec. 8 for third win of the season. Bulls fans beg: More like this, please!
29</FONT>
Atlanta (28)3-15At -12.0, the Hawks have the worst point differential in the NBA. They did thump the slumping Sixers, however, for a nice win last week.
30
New Orleans (30)1-16Crazy eights. They started the season with eight straight losses, won their only game, and have lost eight straight. Also, eight of next 10, including the next three, are away from the Bayou Hive

At the beginning of the season, we were ranked 28th, now we are #1. What has changed? Oh, Stein received many mails from Pacific Northwest!!! Not that he watched Sonics and that's why he put them over there. It is still nice to get recognition by the most ignorant guy, but... oh, well.

I think this guy does not respect the job he is doing. It looks to me like he is preparing these rankings in 5 minutes. Sometimes with my bad English, I feel like I can do a better job than him. Nobody would understand what I was saying, but at least I would be consistent in doing that :)
