Power Rankings are Stupid

That first loss was so abysmal as to be startling -- it'll probably take some time to wash that stink off.

In any case, those are, I beleive, Kerr's rankings, so you figure they were probably done via the dartboard method anyway. I would suspect most rankings will have us somewhere between #10-#15.

Which is where we should be at this point, around 10-15, maybe even 16 or 17 but there ain't no way the Kings are 23. But yeah, who cares about Kerr!

Yeah right Kings are #23.

And don't tell me "oh Power Rankings are supposed to be a measure of the team's performance in the last week" because that's not entirely true and even if it is true that just proves my point that they are stupid worthless indicators.

they are only stupid when they rank your team lower than what you want. they are suprisingly accurate once your team is ranked higher than what you think.

I always take ANYTHING ESPN barfs out with a grain of salt.

Power Rankings, to me, should be a mixture of current record and potential. When I think Power Rankings, I think of the teams I would least want to face. For instance, the Heat, Pacers, Spurs would top the list.

But, I wouldn't be too worried about facing down Memphis.

It's the fear factor, to me.

Right now, after 3-4 games, I just don't think record should be incorporated into the mix. It's not enough time for it to be a realistic indicator of ANYTHING. So, I'd look at how dangerous we are ... that would place us middle of the pack or higher right now ... to me.

The Kings are completely untested right now and showing inconsistency. After week 1, they have to shake things up. Maintaining rankings despite games played is stupid. The Kings deserve to be down low after the way we started the season. After 3-4 games, almost any team could be legitimately placed in about a 12 spot range, the Kings just happened to land on the bottom end of theirs. Rankings make a fun read, that's all they are. If you don't like them, don't read them. I didn't find those particularly absurd, so whatever.

My opinion of Power Rankings are well known, and I don't think that I need to repeat them* here. And NugzFan is spot-on: everybody hates Power Rankings, until their team is rated highly. Then they love them to death, and are given to using them as cites...

:: * - wipes his @$$ with Yahoo Power Rankings anyway, just for the hell of it ::

I usually enjoy reading through the rankings, and many times I agree with them. But this is by Kerr...so im not even gonna take a look.

Well... not everyone.

;)

^^^clippers, bucks, and wizards are 3 of the only 4 remaining undefeated teams in the nba (detroit being #4). the rankings are for how the teams have performed this season, and a little of how they should perform (hence those 3 are lower in the top 10) NOT putting them in the top 10 is stupid. the kings, by no margin, deserve to be ranked very high based on their perfomance to date. just dont read them.

also, what is the purpose of this thread?

Um, 23 might not be that far off...

The landing is less painful climbing up than falling down! At this point I'd have to agree that we have higher to climb than lower to fall.:(

Clearly the purpose is for me to express my distaste for power rankings...

And I disagree that power rankings are great when your team is tops - it's nice to get recognition but you also have to consider the source. Just because about.com says we are going to finals doesn't mean a damn thing. Sure it's cool to get recognized by a generally respected source like ESPN but in general they are a meaningless - and the included set of rankings is evidence of why.

All that said, after TONIGHT maybe the Kings are 23...

No, I don't have to consider the source, that's the whole point; just because ANYBODY says that the Kings are going to the Finals, it doesn't mean a damned thing. As far as I'm concerned, about.com isn't any less legitimate a source for "Power Rankings" than ESPN, or NBA.com, or IMDb.com; they're ALL worthless, except as scratchy toilet paper.

Here's the worst ranking of all. In terms of an entertaining brand of basketball, the Kings are nowhere near the top 20. There is no skill, no precision, no movement, no energy. And-----they can't shoot!

They have become hard to watch. Win or lose, they are dull. That's the part that hurts.
