Probably better for the Kings really, although you have to imagine the looming are they staying or are they going questions and fact the arena wil be knocked down within 3 years either way will have to depress the asking price for a new sponsor.

Kind of interesting how several in local media (mainly at TV/radio stations) have now started refering to arena as "The Natomas Arena." I wonder what name if any will be painted on the court to replace "Power Balance Arena" if there's no new sponsor when Kings start playing games this season on their home floor.

Was just talking about this yesterday with a buddy. Once this PBP thing goes down, the Maloofs should just call it MSE Arena (Maloof Sports Entertainment Arena).

They can also TRY selling the naming rights to the Palms at a discount, but of course David Stern won't have it.

I think that issue really helps the odds of this passing. Everybody with a vote has to be worried about this. None of the yes people are going to bring it up. And I don't think the no votes will either because they also failed to protect us from this issue.

Either way, the city is probably going to buy an arena. Just depends whether they get new or a dump.

I don't think this arena being potentially knocked down in a few years would matter as far as a sponsor goes. The deal would just have to cover the name being transitioned to the new arena, and since the Maloofs wouldn't own it, KJ would have to be brought into negotiate that part. I don't see why the City would say, "Oh, you sponsored that old Arena, we want a new name." It's a built in consistent revenue stream that could be carried over right into the City's pockets.

It is more likely that the new sponsor won't want to be associated with the old building period than anything else. Who wants their name on a dump? I was never too bothered by Power Balance solely because I figured it was the best deal we were going to get. So up next will be something of similar stature or a season or two of a no-name arena.

I said what I said under the assumption that the Maloofs cannot find any new sponsor to pay for the naming rights. This scenario is very likely as it is a shorten season with uncertainties regarding a new arena.

On the other hand, if the arena goes forward as of March 1 (or earlier) there will likely be an early-bird bidding war for naming rights on the new one, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it carry back to the current arena with a different "name" from the same company. For instance, if Intel were to buy the rights, they might name the current arena "Pentium Place" and reserve "The Intel Railyards" for the new arena. Something like that.

Anything is possible, but wouldn't MSE be negotiating rights for what used to be Arco vs. the city negotiating rights for the new building? All with very different interests in mind as well - offsetting their financial woes for the former and the actual finance of the arena for the latter.

I truly expect if the former Arco gets another name it will be another dodgy company trying to make a big splash with a bargain naming deal.

This is an important point - any new arena will still be 3 years or so down the road. You can always include an adjustment clause in your contract for whether the Kings stay or go as well.

Yep, you and PDX are right. I didn't think that through. That does make the prospects of a new naming rights deal for the PBP a bit more iffy.
