Postgame Quotes-vs. Utah

Peja Stojakovic
“It was intensity on the defensive end. We did a good job and we eliminated the easy buckets. We got rebounds and we got it going offensively and we made some shots. Everytime you play Utah, you’ve got to manage the energy, they always play hard for 48 minutes.”

“When they grab and hold you for 30 minutes you get mad. I was just letting the referee know, if you are going to call by the rules, you should do it, and not let them get away from that.”

“When you play Utah, they are always going to play physically. They will grab and hold if they can’t guard you. You’ve just got to manage that, be calm, and play your game.”

“It’s over. We’ve got a game against the Clippers on Saturday. Hopefully Mike is going to be ready. We’ve got a couple of knew guys coming, and we’ve just got to play our game.”

On how physical the game was:
“That’s just Jerry [Sloan]. You don’t expect to see stuff like that happen, and I don’t think it was intentional, I think he just got caught [Maurice Evnas], and that’s what he gets for jumping so high. But Jerry’s hands on. ‘Stick your nose in there, and if it gets busted, stick it back in’, that’s the way Jerry coaches.”

“It’s been a kind of weird situation these last couple of days. Guys leaving, guys coming in. I think everyone came in and contributed. We did a good job overall throughout the game and pulled it out.”

“I think we got some defensive stops, and made some shots. Basically it came down to the defensive end. We made some stops, got the rebounds, and ran down the loose balls. That’s where it all started.”

“You saw what was going on out there. Guys knocking their own teammates down, and a lot of bodies thrown around.”

On the flagrant foul on Maurice Evans: “I don’t think those guys had any chance of blocking that shot. I don’t think it was a smart play. It’s scary. I hope everything is ok with him [Maurice Evans]. I hope it’s just a cut.”

UTAH JAZZ
Coach Jerry Sloan
“We were wanting to be pushed around,we felt like it was tough for us to play back to back games. We got off to a good start quit executing, they came at us and took us out of a couple of things and it became a little too difficult for us.”

“We had a couple of times where we didn’t even go after the ball. You have to compete to be able to finish. You get them down to nine points in the ball game and the thing that bothered me as much as anything when they came to the basket we got little touch fouls. We must have committed five or six of those. Say we gave them six of them, we gave them three point plays. If you’re going to play like you’re in a give away game I guess that’s O.K., but this is the NBA and you’re allowed to foul guys. There’s no rule against it as long as you don’t do anything malicious. There was a couple things that appeared to be malicious, but I really don’t think they were. You have to make guys try to earn it at the free throw line and we just didn’t have that mentality.”

“I don’t know where some guys heads were when they went in the ball game.”

Forward Matt Harpring About the confrontations:
“It’s just playing the game. Stuff like that is going to happen when you play the game of basketball. It doesn’t mean people should get technical fouls. A technical should be deserved to get. There’s going to be some bickering out there, but that’s the game…It’s nothing personal”

“The first quarter, we played pretty well. I thought we executed well and did some things. And then in the fourth quarter we took a twenty-point lead down to nine and we just ran out of time. We started pressing with two minutes to go and then you know when your back is against the wall you start to trap it and they get easy buckets.”

Forward Carlos Boozer:
“I think we came out well. We had a good first quarter and then they picked it up and started playing the next two quarters tough and we couldn’t get over the hump. We had a couple of times when we got it within nine or eight, but then we couldn’t get over the hump.”

“We’re just playing basketball. Sometimes it’s going to be physical and sometimes it’s not. Most of the time we go after it and every game should be physical. If you’re playing hard it’s going to be that way.”

INSIDE DISH

by Devin Blankenship | January 13, 2005 | Kings vs. Utah

Let’s Get Physical!...
Olivia Newton John unknowingly described the Utah Jazz’s style of play more than 20 years ago when she shouted the lyrics, “Let’s get physical, physical, I wanna get, physical!”

The Jazz embody their coach, Jerry Sloan, and play a hard-nosed, tough brand of defense that some question as perhaps too physical. And after Thursday night, you can probably add a few members of the Sacramento Kings to that list.

The Kings locker room resembled an emergency room all night long as several players came in with blood and gashes that needed repair. Sacramento’s medical staff of Pete Youngman, Andrew Tai, Dr. Richard Marder, and others had by far their busiest night of the season trying to keep enough players on the floor for Rick Adelman to use.

The worst injuries by far were to Greg Ostertag and Mo Evans.

Ostertag was elbowed in the mouth in the first half by former teammate Curtis Borchard, which split his top lip and knocked his already false front teeth to the ground. Ostertag did return, but Evans wasn’t so lucky. Evans was flagrantly fouled by Carlos Boozer and Matt Harpring late in the fourth quarter while elevating to the basket. Since he was in a defenseless position, Evans was knocked sideways and landed on his side and his head, opening a huge cut that later required 12 stitches.

Sloan later defended his team’s actions.

“If you’re going to play like you’re in a give away game I guess that’s O.K., but this is the NBA and you’re allowed to foul guys. There’s no rule against it as long as you don’t do anything malicious. There was a couple things that appeared to be malicious, but I really don’t think they were. You have to make guys try to earn it at the free throw line and we just didn’t have that mentality.”

Crazy Man…
I know it’s hard to imagine, but Kings fans are starting to get a glimpse at why some in the front office think Greg Ostertag is goofier than former King Scot Pollard.

If you haven’t seen the video of Ostertag dancing around at the Kings season-ticket holder party in little blue dance team shorts, check it out here. It’s sure not to disappoint. Just make sure there are no children in the room

The thing is that Greg is always like that, even out of the public eye. He’s a prankster and a funny guy rolled into one, and he’s constantly keeping the locker room light with his sense of humor. I’m not sure if there is something in the water in Lawrence, KS or if it’s just because they played together in college, but Tag and Pollard are truly one of a kind and a breed of their own.

People are just wondering what breed that is exactly.

Random Thoughts...

**One bone of contention that some have with Peja Stojakovic is that he doesn’t stand up for himself enough. That’s why Chris Webber loved it so much when Stojakovic got into a shoving match late in the third quarter with Harpring and Keith McLeod after getting roughed up on a shot attempt. You could see Webber smiling and giving approval for Peja’s feistiness.
**Not to make light of a bad situation, but it was kind of funny how Maurice Evans’ teammates kept coming over to the training table to see the gash in his head get stitched up. As Evans lay on his side with a white cloth draped over his head and the doctors stitched him up, guys like Chris Webber, Ostertag, Brad Miller, and Mike Bibby kept stopping by to see the progress. Some even jumped out of the shower completely undressed to catch a glimpse of the cut one player compared to a shark bite.
**It was interesting to watch the new guys, Cuttino Mobley and Michael Bradley, interact with their teammates for the first time in the locker room after the game. Mobley sat with Eddie House and Kevin Martin talking shop, while Bradley moved around and chatted up guys for the first time—he even went into the locker room to catch a glimpse of Mo’s head.
**Carlos Boozer is a class act, and he showed it by coming to the Kings locker room after the game to see how Evans was after his fall.
**One of the funniest things about Ostertag is that he often takes his front two teeth out to eat. You haven't lived until you've seen Greg Ostertag looking like a hockey player, trying to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Peja Stojakovic

Peja was the catalyst for the Kings second quarter run that really put the Kings in control. Plus, he was really feisty.

"It's just like the other night (against Denver). We're really proud of our guys. These two wins are the type you look back on."
-Rick Adelman

Maurice Evans flagrant foul was the play of the night just because it epitomized the whole game - physical and bloody. Evans suffered a mild concussion and is listed as day-to-day, but with his toughness and desire, don't be surprised if he plays Saturday.

TOP STAT: 2nd Quarter Points: Sacramento 37 - Utah 18

What I like is Jerry Sloan seeming to argue that there should have been MORE hard fouls by his team.

Yeah.. and I thought it was just my imagination (after reading some news articles about the game) when I sensed that he was trying to imply that they were too soft.

Not usre I would call Sloan a "dirty coach" you would have to hear form former Jazz players on that. What I mean is I don't know if he suggests, rewards or over looks dirty paly, but one thing is for sure, he played rough, wnats his palyers to paly rough and that does breed dirty play. My feeling is that he is intollerant of soft or finess play, and indiffernet to dirty play such as elbows and dangerous hard fould like Boozers last night. But all evil requires is indifferance.

Boy, would I love to see Peja under Sloan for just 1 year. He'd probably manage to turn Peja into Laimbeer.

Or more likely he would take him out of the direct play and stash him on the permiter like he did Hornacheck who was not a particulary tough player.

More likely he'd bench him for softness and start some scrub of the month who was willing to hack away at people -- still can't believe he insists on bringing Okur off the bench behind nobody basically.

Say what ?! Did you just call Curtis Borchardt a nobody ?

=]

Again, for some reason they didn't transmit this game in HD, so I ended up watching it on 34. Did they stop with the High Def transmissions? HDSE channel 925 is where they had the game on b4, but the channel was dead :(. Anyhow, if you missed this game, too bad, cause you missed a good one. The game on Saturday will be just as fun with the new guys suiting up. Really fun game, even my wife who isn't interested in B-ball was ooooo and ahhhhh'ing every Peja shot and hard fouls. Great job Bench-Mob :)

Here is what I think about Sloan.

He is a great coach, but he has consistently gotten away with irresponsible behavior for years. This happens in polite society. Most intelligent people step back from the brink of the "nuclear option". That allows irresponsible people to push the envelope on a routine basis. Popocvich does the same thing in San Antonio. There is a solution.

The Kings need to use the "nuclear option" on some NBA opponents. Match them, assault for assault, grab for grab, until they understand the consequences of irresponsible and violent behavior. Stojakovic, Webber, Evans, Miller, and others decided to knock some appendages in the dirt last night. Such behavior was, and is, the only way to deal with orchestrated violence. Our players will be safer in the long run by fighting back than by simply complaining to League officials after the game. The U.S. Marines take less abuse from potential antagonists than UN troops. The Marine just don't take a lot of gratuitous abuse.

How would Jerry Sloan approach an important game, what would be his coaching style, if he had three or four key players nursing injuries on the bench. Adelman has been there. He is a sensible man

Hahahahaha!!! Funny!! :D I guess they really want to see the cut. I don't think I can, just watching Mo fall on the floor and laying there looks bad!
