Postgame Quotes-vs. Golden State

rick_adelman.jpg
Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“I am just really disappointed with our effort. I have said it before – our team cannot assume where they are going to be. Our team cannot assume that they are going to be in the play-offs. If you come through there and just coast through games you are not going to be ready for play-offs, and this team is not going to be ready because we are trying to fit it together and if we don’t play at a higher level with more energy than that, we are going to struggle. We have got to find a way to put more into it than we did tonight.”

Regarding Brian Skinner’s injury:
“He shouldn’t have played in the second half. He wasn’t supposed to because he had a bad thumb and he tried to play. He couldn’t hold the ball; he couldn’t do anything. He tried to give us some minutes but I could tell we just had to get him out. So that definitely hurt us; it hurt us on the boards obviously. When you’ve got people out that still doesn’t set aside the way we started the game and everything about it. I told these guys we’ve got 14 games to go and we can’t afford to just come out and cruise. We have got to find out how to win whether guys are out or not. I am talking about the main guys from last year, they have got to come ready to play and they have to lead this team.”

“No matter if we played last night or not or if it’s a late game or we got in really late last night and they didn’t play, you can talk about all those things but that team (Golden State) is a better team than the record. They have Baron Davis and they may be better than some of the teams going to the play-offs the way they are playing right now. They have a lot of big guys who are active, who can shoot and a lot of nice pieces.”

Mike Bibby:
About the flagrant foul:
“If it was a flagrant foul it was the softest flagrant foul…he said something to me so I guess it was a flagrant.”

“We started out slow and they went on a couple of runs and it was all defense. Just a little harder effort and we’ll be all right.”

“They played good, but we didn’t play that good. They played a good game.”

“I think we’ll be all right. As a team effort we didn’t play good defensively.”

kenny_thomas.jpg
Kenny Thomas:
“It’s tough. They didn’t even have some of their key guys as far as Jason Richardson and all that. They were knocking down shots. I don’t know what they shot from the field, but it seemed like everything they put up was going in. We couldn’t get a stop to get over the hump.”

“That’s what it looked like, but I don’t think we got to that point. Like I said, they were just knocking down shots. Like coach said, we needed to pick it up, but we didn’t. I mean this one right here was tough. We should have won that game.”

“I was actually kind of tired tonight. My legs were a little tired. Back to back is tough…and overtime. We did get back late, but that’s no excuse. We’re all professionals and we have to come to work and try to win. Our effort wasn’t there tonight.”

Are you concerned about this team being able to turn it up a notch as you go into the playoffs:
“No I’m not. Not at all. Not one bit.”

Concerning injuries:
“It happens and that’s why you have 12 guys and two on reserve. The guys that are going to come in off the bench like myself, we have to step it up until Brad or Bobby come back.”

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Coach Mike Montgomery:
“Derek (Fisher) said something after the game to the guys that I felt was pretty key. He said ‘you guys haven’t had a chance. You guys work everyday in the weight room.’ They’re the ones that always have to work in the off days and have to come in, and they really helped us tonight. Skita (Nikoloz Skitishvilli), Rodney (White) off the bench, and Adris (Biedrins), those guys made a huge contribution. It was fun. It was good to see that. They came in and played great. Andris had a double-double and was a factor inside. Pietrus had nine rebounds. It was definitely a team situation.”

On Adonal Foyle and Jason Richardson being out:
“Well, we didn’t have any preparation. We just found out this morning that Adonal (Foyle) wasn’t going to be available. So, we just looked at our roster and decided what our substitution pattern was going to be. If you look at the stats, Baron (Davis) didn’t shoot very well, Dunleavy made some huge shots in that stretch but didn’t have a great night so I think the guys off the bench really made a difference for us. We just played four-out, five-out. It’s hard to know with those guys, who can do what. They’re all a little different ‘no-low-post’ players per se’. Andris (Biedrins) was catching the ball and finishing. It was fun to see.”

“Position-wise, when you’re running the offense, I’m not sure where certain guys fit yet. Where Skita (Skitishvilli) would fit or Rodney (White). Z (Caparkapa) is starting to assert himself a little bit as a guy who can play late in the basket. Defensively you’re still concerned about some of the stuff.”

Zarko Caparkapa
“We needed to step up. We lost our best player Jason (Richardson, and Adonal (Foyle) so Andris (Biedrins) stepped up and played a great 30 minutes. Everybody played well. The last couple of weeks we’ve played great every game. We know we can win.”

On Adris Biedrins:
“He got a double-double. He’s a great guy, and I know he can play here and he showed that tonight. I think he is going to have a big NBA career. He’s only 18. I think now I am playing with more confidence. I know how to play basketball. They didn’t give me a chance in Phoenix to play. Now I have a chance so I can show everybody that I can play in the NBA.”

Troy Murphy:
“Different guys have to step up when guys are out. Jason (Richardson) missed a bunch of games earlier this season with a sprained ankle and we didn’t win one of them. We had to make up for that poor showing.”

On whether he was looking for his shot more with the other guys out:
“A little bit. But Baron really looks for me on the pick-and-roll so he really found me and got me some easy buckets along with Derek (Fisher). Those guys really look for the roller and I got some opened looks and knocked them down.”

thx LMM

i really liked some of the quotes from our guys...

i like how everybody knows we didn't come with the effort last night...i expect to see a different game on Tuesday night...we must take advantage of our home games...we have 7 home games and 7 road games left...and basically from now until the end of the season...with the execption of like a whole week off basically in late April....we have games every other day...

I think they all should be ashamed of themselves. They're getting paid millions to play a game and they openly admit that the effort wasn't there.

I think people should quit trying to put their own value systems on players who have been through a lot this season. They are entitled to get job burn-out and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's part of it.

The amount of money they're being is totally irrelevant. Conditions in the work place have changed and changed drastically, as have the co-workers they've depended upon to help them do their jobs. Maybe they're just emotionally worn out. I know I am - and all I have to do is watch.

If I was as inconsistent at my work as some of the Kings players, I wouldn't have a job right now. I don't see why pro athletes should get a free pass. Why isn't the enormous amount of money they make be relevant?? They basically get to live like Kings and have things the common man will never have just b/c they can play a game better than all of us. All they have to do is stay in shape and play a 2-3 hr basketball game. It shoudn't be too much to ask for them to give their best effort.

I'm not into making excuses for lack of effort. I love the team, but I will never constantly make excuses for them thinking they can do no wrong. I've had alot of conditions drastically change at my job (as I'm sure lots of other people have as well) but I don't think you'll see anyone making excuses for me if I'm not putting forth the effort and getting the job done.

You cannot compare your work situation to that of professional athletes. Well you can, but it's not a valid comparison. Never has been.

We worship these guys like idols and pay them obscene amounts of money because they are gifted. They can do something the vast majority of us simply can not to - at least not at anywhere near the level they can.

You can't take a short, clumsy guy and train him to be a premiere basketball player. It's a rarified air they breathe. It's a very physically demanding job they have - and they're often playing at less than peak condition because of nagging injuries. Most of the time they can play through them, but even the strongest eventually gets worn down.

If you have a high-performance car, do you run it day after day with the timing off and the wheels out of balance? If so, you do get the optimum performance?

NO ONE is giving the Kings a free pass. But I'm also not going to make silly comments about how they should be ashamed of themselves without taking everything into consideration.

There may be a lapse in enthusiasm right now, a lack of effort. If so, it's certainly undertstandable to me.

Another thing Adelman said that wasn't in the post-game quote article: He said the team needs to play with an attitude. I'm surprise they didn't add that in the article.

Oh, and he also said the refs was like the Kings...bad. :D

This post-game was one of the that I heard Rick the most upset.

It's always been a joke that athletes make obscene amounts of money to play a game. I understand it's because the fans will pay to see them play and that there is a very high demand for it. However, it's not like these guys are saving lives, they're simply entertaining us. I respect guys like Curt Schilling (although I hate the Red Sox as a team) for admitting that athletes are ridiculously overpaid and shouldn't take anything for granted.

Physically demanding job?? Normal people have to work 40+ hour weeks and often work OT with no pay. The normal person has to work alot harder than most athletes and is usually higher educated.

I don't expect the Kings to win every game and every player to play out of his mind. It's only natural for players like Bibby to fall off a bit after playing 40+ minutes over the last 6-7 games. However, I respect that he's giving his best and wants to win every night. All I expect is for each player to give his best effort. That really isn't too much to ask. Why can't they play like Bibby and Skinner instead of loafing through games only showing occasional interest like Peja?

Judging from all the time everyone spends on here; it seems like alot of fans care alot more about every game and the Kings playoff seeding than some of the Kings players themselves. That's what makes me sick.

It appears that Adelman agrees with me:

“I am just really disappointed with our effort. I have said it before – our team cannot assume where they are going to be. Our team cannot assume that they are going to be in the play-offs. I think he's talking about Peja... good to see coach is a little pee off rather than ignoring. Some issue really has to be addressed.

I'm pretty sure Rick tells them every game. ;)

You seem to want to bring a lot more into the discussion than was originally there... Reminds me of someone who used to post here, but that's not germane to this discussion.

Anyway, you apparently have issues with the players and their effort or lack thereof. That's your choice and your opinion. I disagree. We've pretty much made that much clear. Future argument would not get either of us to change our minds...

Peace.
