Pistons, Knicks shopping for KG?

Get ready for the Kevin Garnett trade rumors, the first of which was quickly shot down Sunday by Kevin McHale and Joe Dumars -- even as others maintained it was legit.

Both team executives denied there was any truth to talk that made its way around the league over the weekend that the Detroit Pistons were willing to ship a package including Rasheed Wallace and Darko Milicic to Minnesota for Garnett.

The future of the 29-year-old eight-time All-Star came into question after Garnett's much-discussed interview Thursday night on TNT. Garnett criticized McHale for his handling of the Timberwolves during the troubled 2004-05 season in which Flip Saunders was fired and McHale took over as head coach.

Dumars insisted he had not been in contact with the Wolves regarding Garnett, and McHale also dismissed the rumor, which came as executives from others teams were trying to gauge whether the Timberwolves would seriously consider dealing the franchise player who has been with Minnesota throughout his entire 10-year NBA career. Team owner Glen Taylor told reporters in Minnesota that Garnett has "never, ever" sought a trade.

"We're not trading Garnett," McHale said Sunday night.

The prevailing opinion around the league is that Minnesota, barring a sustained nosedive prior to the All-Star break, would not consider trading Garnett before next summer. With a record of 5-4 following their victory over Charlotte on Saturday night, the Wolves are in first place in the Northwest Division.

Garnett is under contract for $18 million this season, then will make $21, $22 and $23 million over the next three years. With Wally Szczerbiak under contract for an equal number of years ($10 million this season, $11, $12 and $13 million the next three), the Timberwolves would have very little salary cap flexibility for the next half-decade unless they jettisoned their two highest-paid players. Minnesota already has a forward, Mark Madsen, and three guards, Marko Jaric, Troy Hudson and Trenton Hassell, signed at least through the 2009-10 season.

One source told ESPN.com that the New York Knicks had made Minnesota an offer that included the expiring contracts of Penny Hardaway ($15.7 million) and Antonio Davis ($13.9 million). But for such a trade to work under salary cap rules, the Knicks would also have to take back Sczcerbiak. While that deal would be stunningly lopsided talent- wise, it would relieve the Wolves of $102 million in salary obligations over the next three seasons, allowing them to enter the 2006 offseason with approximately $25 million of cap space.

One source close to several NBA players insisted that the viability of the Knicks' offer should not be dismissed, going so far as to say Garnett was making a private push through back channels to be dealt to New York and reunite with former teammate Stephon Marbury.

"I'd bet money he'll be wearing a Knicks uniform by the end of February," the source said.

Another source insisted Detroit's offer of Wallace and Milicic was real, adding that the offer was made through another Pistons official so that Dumars could maintain deniability in case the players came to him for an explanation.

The Nets have also been mentioned as a possible trade partner in a Garnett deal, but it is believed the Wolves would consider a deal with New Jersey only if they could get back Richard Jefferson, whose status as a base-year compensation player under salary cap rules makes him exceedingly difficult to deal. The best offer the Nets could make this season would include Vince Carter, another player (Nenad Krstic?, Mile Ilic?) and a pair of No. 1 picks (their own and the Clippers').

That's ridiculous. I mean, sure, they get a salary cap relief once Davis' and Hardaway's contract expire, but who are they going to get? It' not like everyone would be waiting in line to join T-Wolves, especially after KG is gone.

There is no way McHale is stupid enough to trade KG for Davis and Hardaway. It's gona have to be another franchise player(s). And I don't think there will be any major free agents available next summer.

The NY deal would make sense if they thew in at least two of their promising youngsters (Frye, Lee, Ariza, Robinson) along with the cap room.

That paragraph alone makes me feel like a fool for having any hope of KG being on the block.

KG’s pushing to be on Marbury's team? Sounds like sarcasm being misinterpreted.

Then there's the stuff about Dumars not being the one involved just so he can deny that he talked with anyone. Is that really how the NBA operates? Sounds more like the dating game in junior high.

Soup - Keep your cotton-pickin' Hoosier hands off OUR Kevin Garnett.

Period.

Why, dear KG. What ever would make you think something like that? Au contraire, mon ami...

:D

Uh oh...she's onto us.

;)

As if McHale didn't look enough like Frankenstein, the townsfolk will chase him up to the top of Target Center with torches. There he will perish in the flames as the TC burns -- just like the movie.

I would bet good money that NY is one of the last places Garnett will go. Absolutely everyone in the league wants to get Garnett and would be willing to trade for him (outside of SA, Pho, Cle, Mia, maybe Det-why mess with success?). If NY offers Hardaway and Davis that is one of the more talent-deficient offers that could be fielded. Of course, New York will remain the "frontrunner" as the media will continue to focus on KG to LA, KG to NY, KG to Cleveland, etc. But Dallas (if they wanted), Milwaukee, maybe Indiana, Chicago, and Denver could all put together great packages. Oh, and not to be a homer, but I cannot imagine any team wanting to get KG and having more selection to offer than Sacramento. 3 of our 5 starters would beat any offer by any other team, I would wager- seeing especially as the more talent heavy teams are all way closer to being contenders and less likely to trade their respective cores. (oops, I'm being a homer anyway)

Don't forget to throw in the dance team, Slamson, and pretty much anything else they want - up to and including Grant, Jerry, Koz, Petrie's house in Granite Bay, etc.

Ugh...I'm having flashbacks of those finals in the 80's.

The Raptors could possibly have the best package for Wolves

Chris Bosh
Jalen Rose
2 1st round picks
2nd round pick

For

Kevin Garnett

this deal could possibly have some legs if something like that was offered could be hard for the Wolves to say no.

He wasn't our friend then and he's not going to be now. If KG is traded (I think things in Minny have to get a LOT worse before it happens), he's headded East.

"Don't be surprised if the Timberwolves talk trade with the Jazz, with Michael Olowokandi going to Utah for Carlos Boozer, and with either Troy Hudson or Marko Jaric of the Wolves as part of a deal." http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/sports/13228606.htm

And so the table is set just as I predicted it would be months ago: ;)

http://kingsfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=175168&highlight=Boozer#post175168

(well my alternate Kandi/PG (instead of Wally) version -- especially now with Jaric as the potential trade pawn)

Could Minnesota really say no to Peja/Brad AND Boozer?

Would Utah really refuse to unload Boozer's contract, get back an unselfish PG that Sloan would appreciate in Jaric, help at the center spot & cap relief in Kandiman, a Boozer replacement in KT with a Sloan mindset, AND a young OG at one of their weak positions in Kevin?

How could we turn down the opportunity to have a Bibby/Bonzi/KG/SAR quartet with Harpring as 6th man?

I'm not sure, but love to see it suggested by somebody, and if it happens I am opening my own New Church of Me, so feel free to worship at your leisure. ;)

from Houston, some fans would like to trade Yao for KG, or for brad miller + KT.
Personally, I think KG will go an eastern team.

brad & KT?? (guess that's where the KT homers disappeared to! ;) )

Some fans are idiots in that case, but I would HIGHLY encourage them to express their idiocy to their front office and let's get it done!

Nice trade, but still...Boozer and Harpring for KT and Jaric? I don't know about that one.

Also, Yao-for-KG will not happen, Houston will not trade Yao in the near future, I guarantee it. Yao is younger, they might finally be doing well with him and McGrady, and getting Yao back for KG is no improvement at all. If Minny trades KG I can only think they would want several talented players to rebuild around, give them more flexibility, rather than just go for one contract in one player that brings back the same problems that they're facing now.

i'd give up kt, sar, peja, and brad for kg.
bibby and kg could play against 5 guys. of course the bench would come in when the two guys needed a rest. it would be the perfect seven man rotation.

Ok, so far, from Indiana, I am hearing JO, Granger, and expiring contracts for KG, Wally and spare parts.

From Detroit, Sheed, Darko, and spare parts for KG.

From NY, Spare parts and draft picks for KG.

Indystar Forums has a guy who claims to be a Hoopshype contributor (whatever that's worth to ya...;)) is useing the Celtic connection.

Pistons are reporting, as are the Knicks, from articles already posted on this site.

LOL! Hey, if this trade comes to pass not only will I attend church, you'll get 10% of my income in the form of a NCoM tithe! :D

Hey if minny is looking for expiring contracts we could offer them more than any team in terms of talent of ending contracts. Pedja and Bonzi together is worth more than anything the knicks could offer.
